I know this is why we shouldn’t share baby names, but what’s done is done. My family has decided that that our favorite baby name, [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], is in fact a dog name. My husband still has his heart set on it, but it’s slowly being ruined for me. What do you all think? I know that it’s a fairly popular pet name, but we don’t know any personally. I just read that [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] was number 49 in 2016 for male dog names. It’s not like it’s a top ten. Many popular dog names for both males and females cross over into baby names right now. Does that make [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], and [name_m]Jack[/name_m] dog names? They are all top 10! [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] has centuries of history as a person name (e.g. [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] [name_m]Tudor[/name_m] in the 1400s). I just saw a baby on Facebook named [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. Now in my opinion, THAT is a dog’s name! Is our name choice really that awful? [name_m]Will[/name_m] our son be bullied? (Side note-at a [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] get together yesterday my aunt bought my grandmother a book about “[name_u]America[/name_u]'s Dog”, [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this was just a coincidence but it upset me a bit. Ugh!)
Ugh, I’m sorry it’s being ruined for you. That’s why we don’t tell family our name choice until birth, we just don’t want to hear people’s opinions!! (I just ask you name berries instead, hehe)
That said, I think [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a great name! I really like it and honestly never thought of it as a dog name, ever. And my dogs always have people names. ([name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_m]Ogden[/name_m]…)
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is lovely. If you have your heart set on it, ignore everyone else.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a great name! I’ve known several little boys with this name. The only time a name should be off limits as the result of a pet is if you or a close family member or friend have had an animal with the name.
First, I think there is no such thing as animal names or human names. [name_m]Just[/name_m] names. People use what they like for a person/animal they love: baby, cat, dog, fish, …
The barrier between what people call “human names” and “animal names” is anyways getting smaller every year. Kids are named [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m], [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f], and dogs are named [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. It’s not a problem.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is an old name, in [name_f]France[/name_f] we have his variant: [name_m]Gaspard[/name_m]. It’s such a good name and your son won’t be bullied. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let your family ruin it.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let that throw you off! Like you said, there are so many names that cross over and the most popular names for dogs are some of the most popular used for humans. [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a beautiful, sweet name and I think you should go for it!
Ugh first of all I’m sorry your family is being so negative about your name pick! I don’t know any animals named jasper and I think it’s a lovely boys name. I love it as a boys name actually. Forget what your family says, its about you and husband! Once you give your baby that name they will get over it and learn to love it. And stop googling dog name lists lol that will make it worse! We named our dog [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] hah so if anything we raided the human list!
Some people just don’t know how to keep their mouths shut. [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a great name! I don’t know a single dog named [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a lovely name! I would never think “dog” - it feels like the name of a really sweet, smart, polite kid. I’ve met a few Jaspers and not a bad one among them
Families always have a lot to say on the subject of baby names. But they’ve all had their go and now it’s your turn. Please don’t let them put you off your favourite! No one will bat an eye at the name a few months down the line - he will just be [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and they’ll forget about whatever (misguided, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]) reservations they had about the name at first.
The dogs I’ve had in my lifetime were [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. All great names for people, and great names for dogs. I hate the argument that a name is a “dog” name, especially because I don’t go around telling people they can’t use [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] because it’s a dog name. The only “dog” names for me are things like [name_f]Coco[/name_f] or [name_f]Fifi[/name_f].
[name_f]IMO[/name_f] there’s not really such a thing as a ‘dog name’. It’s just one person’s (or one group’s) opinion of a name that makes it that, and if it’s not a dog name to you and you love it and it feels right…go for it!
P.S. I really, really like [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]!
I like [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]! I have met one. That being said, it is going to come across as an animal name to some people. You just need to decide if you care about that or not. My son is [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]. My mother said it sounded like a pigs name. I didn’t care because I loved it so much. Good luck!
So, personally, I am not a fan of the name [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]. However, you love it, and it is your baby. Your husband loves the name as well.
I see the appeal of the name, the history of its use (on humans), and the fact that it is a place name (mountainous town in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]), I see it with a refreshing and naturey nod to a gentlemanly little boy. It is a great name, it’s has a lovely sound, I have such positive imageries with this name, and most of all, you and your husband love it!
As you said people name dogs all sorts of people names nowadays, it shouldn’t really matter.
I truly think you should go with the name [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] for your little boy, and not worry about what your family thinks. It will be hard to ignore their comments, but it’s your baby, and they will love him regardless of his name. If they really are getting to you with their comments, throw out some other contenders to throw them off and keep their [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] comments at bay for the mean time.
It’s not a “dog name” to me.
I’ve never thought of [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] as a dog name! It’s a great name with rich history and I hope you don’t let anyone ruin the way you feel about it.
Ditto to what @mccharlie and others have said. I truly hope you can move past the negative comments and go with [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]. It’s a great name and it always reminds me of the beautiful vacation destination of [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] in the [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] Mountains. He is your child to name and I hope you can think of positive things you love about the name and choose what YOU love.
When we told my family what we were planning on naming our youngest my sister said [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] wasn’t a name. I worried about it and even posted here on Nameberry as well. In the end we kept the name we picked and there has never been any issues with it. I’m very glad we didn’t change her name because of some bad feedback. [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a lovely name and I hope you use it.
I love [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] and had never see it as a dog name. And if it was a dog name, it’ll be a lovely one.
What name isn’t used as a dog’s name nowadays? Your family chose an a**hole way to tell you that they don’t like your name choice. Please ignore them.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is a really lovely name, I don’t think you should be put off. I know a lot more dogs than people with the name [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (5+ dogs, 2 toddlers) but that doesn’t make it a dog’s name. It’s a name, whether its for an animal, a person or whatever.
