[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone,

I’m looking for Southern style names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any favourites or suggestions? I don’t really know if I have a naming style as such, to give an idea on what I would like so I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks!

What part of the South? I could suggest the usual - [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - but I’m wondering if you want something more specific.

A fellow nameberry said she knew I was from the South from my signature names before she even looked at my location. I think southern names have a great tradition, and babies and adults can wear them well as long as the name itself isn’t too syrupy sweet. One way to avoid the “Aunt Bitty” style names are to pull from regions, geographic features, etc. Some of my favorites are:
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_u]Austen[/name_u] (feminized version of [name_m]Austin[/name_m])
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Delta[/name_f]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Silas[/name_m]
[name_u]Landry[/name_u] (in louisiana this is a unisex name)
[name_u]Blair[/name_u] (more common for boys in the south than girls)
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_u]Tyler[/name_u]
[name_u]Barrett[/name_u]
[name_m]Travis[/name_m]
[name_f]Sabine[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-____ (southern [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]'s Catholic influence shows here with plenty of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Amelias, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Katherines, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s, etc)
[name_m]Jackson[/name_m]
[name_m]Jefferson[/name_m]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Stone[/name_m]
[name_m]Houston[/name_m]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]Clint[/name_m]
[name_m]Collier[/name_m]
[name_u]Norris[/name_u]

Etc.

A few more that haven’t been mentioned:

[name_f]Lilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Eula[/name_f]
[name_f]Maybelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Wisteria[/name_f]
[name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Talullah[/name_f]

The names that immediately came to mind…

[name_f]Louella[/name_f]
[name_f]Eudora[/name_f]
[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]

Where I’m from in the south, it’s a big thing to give your kids family surnames-- but they are your actual family surnames. This usually works best for super WASPs with English/Irish surnames and has the effect of displaying family lineage (because It has the effect of telling people who else you are related to and that’s considered important to some people). I should mention that it’s limited to a particular set of high SES individuals where I live.

Examples (all girls):
Preston
Copley
Holt
Quinn
Carling
Murphy

Other really southern names that come to mind:
Maggie
Augusta
Tallulah
Scout
Zelda
Clementine
Nola
Dixie
Ruby
Tara
Viola
Tabitha

I would definitely check your family tree for usable surnames. I know quite a few girls with family surnames as their middle names or the second part of a double name. For example, something like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] McLendon Surname or [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_m]Davis[/name_m] Surname feels very Southern to me.

[name_f]Cathy[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_f]Talullah[/name_f]
[name_u]Abilene[/name_u]
[name_u]Penny[/name_u]
Rhetta
[name_u]Chase[/name_u]
Oleandra
[name_f]Elmira[/name_f]

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]

As some PP have suggested, surnames are a huge part of Southern naming tradition. In my region, boys are often given their mother’s maiden (or some other significant surname) as a first, and girls are given it as a middle. It is also quite common to hear little girls wearing traditionally male names in honor of a father, grandfather, etc. In those cases, the spelling may change or a traditionally feminine middle is given. For example:
[name_m]Kevin[/name_m] [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] (female)
[name_u]Norris[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] (male named for mother’s surname)
[name_m]Collier[/name_m] [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] (same as above)
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (female)
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_m]Ward[/name_m] (mother’s maiden in middle slot)
Etc.
Another name I haven’t seen on here is [name_f]Annette[/name_f]

These are all from an southern heirloom sewing company site that lists the names of its child models etc. I like quite a few of them!
