Sovannary

One of my students is named Sovannary (prn so-vaughn-uh-ree) and it’s so pretty. It’s a Cambodian name and I have no idea what it means but it’s so pretty I thought I would share it. She’s a beautiful girl in her early twenties (I instruct adults).

Has anyone else heard of it?

I’ve never heard it before, but it’s beautiful!

I’ve never heard it before, and it’s terrible [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Sounds more like a creepy haunted house, LOL.

It sounds too ‘surnamey’ to me, but I can see the appeal. It sort of feels like [name_u]Flannery[/name_u] to me

It looks a bit too much like [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] to me - the whole -vanna- thing. But it’s pretty. I only found one mentioning online and have no idea how accurate it is.

I think I’d prefer Sovaneary because it looks less familiar to me and I therefore can enjoy the name more than feeling like someone did something odd to [name_f]Savannah[/name_f].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps a little.

It’s lovely, although I agree, sounds more like a surname.

I don’t really know anything about Khmer names, but Sovannary immediately made me think of Channary, which is i a Khmer girls name in the Behind the Name database and has always struck in my mind as being a pretty, interesting name. Behind the Name lists Channary as meaning “moon-faced girl”, so I guess nnary means “girl”?

Sovannary has a beautiful sound! I really like it.

Sovannary is very pretty. I wouldn’t instinctively put ‘vaughn/vorn’ in the middle of it though. I’d have to listen to a recording of it.

EDIT:: Ah, I thought so. ‘so-van-a-ree’. Much prettier

Beautiful!
