Spelling preference

Thinking of [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] for a girls name, but playing with the idea of it being spelt Ellys. What’s everyone’s thoughts? Anytime read that it looks like Ellie’s to me. Interested in some outside perspective

Ellys looks to much like Elly’s for me. [name_f]Elys[/name_f] could work!

I would assume Ellys was pronounced like [name_f]Elise[/name_f] rather than [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. I like the original [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] spelling, or the previous suggestion of [name_f]Elys[/name_f]! Eliss could also work.

Ellys I also pronounce like Ellie’s. But I wouldn’t go with the previous suggestion of [name_f]Elys[/name_f] either because my first instinct was to pronounce it like [name_f]Elise[/name_f] and then my next thought was Eli’s. I think if you want a non-traditional spelling the only one that makes sense is Eliss. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe even Elyss.

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] still looks best to me

Hmm, I prefer the Ellis spelling. It’s more intuitive, I feel like Ellys would get misspelled a lot.

I prefer [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], Ellys looks a tiny bit ‘incorrect’ if that makes sense.

Any of the Y spellings (Elys or Ellys), I’d say like Elyse/Elise instead of [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] with Eliss or Elyss, I’d say them uh-LISS instead of ELL-liss. This is an instance where [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is hands down the easiest spelling in terms of pronunciation.

i prefer [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. Ellys looks like “Elly’s” to me, and i’m afraid i would pronounce [name_f]Elys[/name_f] as [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. plus, [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] is the most intuitive spelling.

Honestly I would read Ellys as a spelling variant of Elise rather than Ellis, so I wouldn’t pronounce it correctly. If you’re ok with an occasional mispronunciation, then I think Ellys is a nice spelling, it just isn’t an intuitive pronunciation for me.

I prefer [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]

I really like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] for a girl and prefer the traditional spelling. I know an [name_f]Elys[/name_f] but she pronounces it as [name_f]Elise[/name_f].

Ellys / [name_f]Elys[/name_f] I would confuse with [name_f]Elyse[/name_f] / [name_f]Elise[/name_f], or would possibly think it’s a shortening of [name_f]Elysia[/name_f].

I guess I get what you’re saying about reading Ellie’s when you see [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], but I genuinely think altering the spelling would create more issues rather than alleviating them.

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] seems the most straightforward. Everything else seems confusing to pronounce

I’d pronounce Ellys like [name_f]Elise[/name_f]

I like the [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] spelling.

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name with any spelling!

I’d go with the more usual [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] with this one, though I do like the appeal of Ellys - it just looks good to me. I kind of like how in earlier times, before regulated spellings, that i and y were interchangeable - so I like old names with old spellings such as [name_f]Edyth[/name_f], [name_f]Tamsyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Alyson[/name_f] etc. [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] will be more expected and straightforward though.

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. :heart::heart:

I don’t prefer it to [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], but it’s still nice! Ellys might get mispronounced though.

I prefer original spellings. Ellys looks like it should be pronounced [name_f]Elise[/name_f].
