I heard the name [name_u]Leith[/name_u] on the CW show [name_u]Reign[/name_u]. On the show, the name is pronounced LAYTH. However, upon asking, most people say they would pronounce it in the same way as [name_m]Keith[/name_m]. However, this spelling looks most correct to me. The Arabic name [name_m]Laith[/name_m] is pronounced the same way, but the spelling looks “off” to me. What would you do?
When I was reading your post, my first reaction was to pronounce it “[name_f]Leeth[/name_f].” I understand the proper pronunciation, but I think you could definitely have some troubles with people pronouncing it wrong. I’d suggest going with the alternate spelling, but if you are set on [name_u]Leith[/name_u], then I’d say go for it!
Laeth?
Otherwise [name_u]Leith[/name_u] is an awesome name, just might get a little tedious correcting people, but frankly its unique and to me, worth it
I would also pronounce [name_u]Leith[/name_u] like [name_m]Keith[/name_m]. English speakers probably are more likely to pronounce it that way since when two vowels are together, the first makes the sound.
Usually you tell people a child’s name so if you spell it one way usually correcting those who read it first isn’t an issue
I would say [name_u]Leith[/name_u] as [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-th
I know a [name_u]Leith[/name_u] who pronounces it ‘leeth’. Unless everyone just says it wrong and he’s always gone with it. ? I like the look of [name_m]Laith[/name_m] though.
I definitely pronounced it LAYTH when I first read it. You may have some people who would say [name_f]LEETH[/name_f], but I don’t think it would a huge issue. It’s a great name.
I think if you way prefer the [name_u]Leith[/name_u] spelling you’ll have to be okay correcting people - not a huge deal at all! A good portion will get it right anyways Im sure.
I do find the spelling [name_m]Laith[/name_m] more intuitive though! I think the look would grow on you, especially if everyone can say it haha
Not necessarily, [name_u]Leith[/name_u] prn leeth is also a name. Same spelling, different pronunciation. Kind of like read and read. My sole argument that [name_u]Leith[/name_u] can be prn LAYTH is that princess [name_f]Leia[/name_f] isn’t prn lee ah.
I would use [name_m]Laith[/name_m].
My brother went to school went to school with a boy named [name_u]Leith[/name_u], and it was pronounced [name_f]LEETH[/name_f]. I’ve never heard it pronounced LAYTH before, but it’s perfectly acceptable. If you’re worried about people mispronouncing [name_u]Leith[/name_u], then I’d use [name_m]Laith[/name_m].
I knew a [name_m]Leif[/name_m] growing up, pronounced Layf, but the vast majority of people assumed “leaf.” He ended up just being OK with either one because it got tiring to correct people all the time.
I pronounce it Layth like eight. I like it very much.
