Spelling question but I’m going to talk too much for a quick poll!

Actually, I did do a quick poll on this, but I realized that I have too much to say for it to be reliable. I know, I know, [name_u]Abby[/name_u] talking too much, I’m surprised too. /s

I’m going to add the name “my-kuh” to my list but I don’t know how to spell it. Here are my ideas so far and any reservations I hold.

[name_u]Micah[/name_u] — this reads masculine to me
[name_u]Micha[/name_u] — this spelling made me fall in love with the name on a girl… but yeah, it looks like mee-shuh to me too
[name_f]Myka[/name_f] — my old favorite but now I can’t separate it from [name_f]Myka[/name_f] Stauffer
[name_f]Maike[/name_f] — according to BtN, the [name_m]German[/name_m] pronunciation is essentially what I want, plus it’s a girl’s name. The spelling is a little confusing though
[name_f]Meike[/name_f] — spelled it right this time  see above
[name_f]Maika[/name_f] — ooh, did I fix the spelling confusion? Maybe. Does it look off to anyone else though?
[name_u]Mica[/name_u] — something about this is too simple for me
[name_f]Mykah[/name_f] — this is too messy
[name_u]Mika[/name_u] — I think this is mee-kuh
[name_u]Mikah[/name_u] — it’s a no from me

Now, vote! Ignoring the last 4 because they’re my least favorite.

  • [name_u]Micah[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Micha[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Myka[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Maike[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Meike[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Maika[/name_f]
  • Other

Have I missed any? [name_u]Or[/name_u] do you want to make a case for [name_u]Mica[/name_u], [name_f]Mykah[/name_f], [name_u]Mika[/name_u], or [name_u]Mikah[/name_u]?

If you vote for “Other” could you please elaborate! Thank you

I voted:

Micah - it looks clear and tidy to me

Myka - it makes the pronunciation clearest

Maika - it looks feminine and bright

I feel like [name_u]Micah[/name_u] or [name_f]Myka[/name_f] may be the only way to avoid 99% of pronunciation problems. I prefer [name_u]Micah[/name_u] between these two, because it looks more legitimate.

I voted other because for a girl I vastly prefer [name_u]Mika[/name_u]/Mica, but I do stand by my previous statement and agree that these would likely have a lot of people saying mee kah. But I do love them alot!

Imo, [name_u]Micha[/name_u], [name_f]Meike[/name_f] and [name_f]Maike[/name_f] will not achieve the pronunciation you are looking for. I would initially read [name_f]Maika[/name_f] as mayk ah, as well.

I never knew there were so many spellings! Anyway I voted for [name_u]Micah[/name_u] and [name_f]Maike[/name_f].

Micah seems the most intuitive. [name_f]Maike[/name_f] to me works better than [name_f]Maika[/name_f] because if I say [name_f]Maika[/name_f] I would think “Oh, ends in -a, says “uh” at the end, and since that’s an [name_f]English[/name_f] ending, is the “ai” in the center pronounced like “Ay”?” Whereas seeing [name_f]Maike[/name_f] with the “e” ending I would also assume “uh” but then my brain sees it as a Germanic ending, which means I read “ai” as “eye”, which is the sound you’re going for. [name_f]Meike[/name_f] could also work but two Es would make me question if it’s mee-kah or my-kah.

That possibly made no sense  but I wanted to explain my votes!

So, [name_u]Micah[/name_u] is the most intuitive for me, because I know several boys by this name. [name_f]Myka[/name_f] gets me closest other than [name_u]Micah[/name_u], because I think it is like [name_f]Myra[/name_f]. However, I’m not super keen on how [name_f]Myka[/name_f] looks on paper. Seems like a misspelling of [name_u]Mica[/name_u] to me. [name_f]Maika[/name_f] makes me want to pronounce it [name_f]May[/name_f]-kuh. That’s probably because I know a [name_f]Maisa[/name_f] and a [name_f]Maida[/name_f]. If it were me, I’d go with [name_u]Micah[/name_u], even if it is masculine, but I think it also looks the prettiest, too.

I’d go with [name_f]Meike[/name_f] or [name_f]Maike[/name_f] with the [name_m]German[/name_m] pronunciation and teach people how to say it properly. I’d probably pronounce both of these wrong if reading them on paper for the first time, but would quickly change when corrected. The [name_f]Mai[/name_f] looks more like “my” than the [name_f]Mei[/name_f], but again they are not [name_f]English[/name_f] names so the rules are different.

I personally would not use [name_u]Micah[/name_u] on a girl since it’s an established boy name, especially a Biblical name, but that’s just my preference.
