Spelling questions

I’m always wondering if a name’s impression changes so much with the spelling for others as well. To me it makes a huge difference. For example [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] reminds me of the color pink and ribbions, [name_f]Kailey[/name_f] reminds me of the sea and sun. [name_f]Alison[/name_f] is kind of cute and medieval, [name_u]Allison[/name_u] is more trendy and 70s. [name_f]Sara[/name_f] is younger and more carefree than [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (I like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] too, though!).

So I am wondering:

  1. Which names do you love spelled a certain way but really dislike in another (standard or not) spelling?

  2. How would you spell the following names and do the different spellings give you different images? If so, which ones?

  • my-ah
  • ky-ah
  • ay-va
  • ly-la
  • lay-la
  • hay-lee
  • sky-ler
  • kay-lee
  • kath-rin
  • kate-lin
  • kay-lin
  • izz-uh-bel
  • muh-kay-la
  • muh-kenn-na
  • em-eh-leen
  • jo-dee
  • jay-see

I hope you get my explanations of the spellings, I didn’t want to put a certain spelling there in order not to influence your choices but I am not that good at explaining pronunciations

  1. Which names do you love spelled a certain way but really dislike in another (standard or not) spelling?
  • I love the sleek, literary and snappy [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], not so much the frillier/fussier [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] (not hating on anyone who prefers it)
  • [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] over [name_f]Clio[/name_f] - [name_u]Cleo[/name_u] feels warmer and summery. [name_f]Clio[/name_f] a bit less substantial?
  • [name_f]Una[/name_f] over [name_f]Oona[/name_f]. [name_f]Una[/name_f] feels mystical but stylish and zippy. [name_f]Oona[/name_f] has a more magical, mystical, ancient feel
  • [name_f]Carys[/name_f] over [name_f]Caris[/name_f] or [name_f]Charis[/name_f] (the pn might vary depending on place, but I’ve heard all three said the same. [name_f]Carys[/name_f] feels rounder, warmer, lovely)
  • [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] over [name_u]Sloan[/name_u] - the latter just doesn’t look complete to me
  • [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] over [name_f]Darcie[/name_f] or [name_u]Darcey[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Margot[/name_f] over [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] or [name_f]Margo[/name_f]

2) How would you spell the following names and do the different spellings give you different images? If so, which ones?

  • my-ah - [name_f]Maia[/name_f] would be my go to. It feels floral and bright. [name_f]Maya[/name_f] feels more summery, [name_f]Mya[/name_f] more trendy, Meja/Maja more international
  • ky-ah - [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] is my preference - it has more kick. [name_f]Kaja[/name_f] feels European and more classic, [name_f]Kaiya[/name_f] feels tied to a certain time, [name_f]Kya[/name_f] feels sparky and on trend, Caia/Caja feel more gentle
  • ay-va - [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - I feel like [name_f]Eva[/name_f] could be pronounced ay-va too, but that doesn’t work in my head
  • ly-la - [name_f]Lila[/name_f] - looks tidier, more precise and fresh. [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] is sweet too - straight forward and a little more modern
  • lay-la - [name_f]Leila[/name_f] - I like the ei together, it feels more mystical, more like the meaning. [name_f]Layla[/name_f] is nice too
  • hay-lee - [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] - neat, kind of green in vibe, a bit nature-y. I like [name_u]Haley[/name_u] too - feels a bit sparkly. [name_f]Hayley[/name_f], [name_f]Hayleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Haylee[/name_f] feel complicated to me
  • sky-ler - [name_f]Skyla[/name_f] - just love how light and bright it looks! It looks like it should be written in baby blue. Skyler/Skylar are okay - prefer the latter - it has more of the bright feel. [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u] reminds me of phlegm and gagging or feet and I don’t know why
  • kay-lee - [name_f]Ceilidh[/name_f] is my favourite - I like the distinct, sweet look. [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] is nice too!
  • kath-rin - [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - a little sharper and stronger, and leans more easily to [name_u]Kitty[/name_u]. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] feels more serious, [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] feels snappy
  • kate-lin - [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]. I like the pink, gentle yet rugged feel of [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]. [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] I enjoy the straightforwardness of it
  • kay-lin - [name_f]Kaylin[/name_f]? [name_f]Kaylyn[/name_f]? Not sure I’m getting any vibes
  • izz-uh-bel - [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - feels snappier and sharper, stylish and cool. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is more frilly
  • muh-kay-la - [name_f]Mckayla[/name_f] - looks kind of sassy and funky. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is feels more serious, but gives the vibe that she was named after a [name_u]Michael[/name_u]
  • muh-kenn-na - McKenna - rugged, mountain-esque, but fresh and cool too.
  • em-eh-leen - [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] - sleek and pretty. [name_f]Emmaline[/name_f] is nice enough, but feels more like a smoosh name
  • jo-dee - [name_u]Jodie[/name_u] - I prefer they lightness brought by the -ie. [name_u]Jody[/name_u] feels more unisex/masc (not a bad thing!)
  • jay-see - [name_u]Jacey[/name_u] - warm and sparky, modern and a little unisex. [name_u]Jaycee[/name_u] feels modern and YouTube-y. [name_u]Jacie[/name_u] is sweet and a little frilly, [name_f]Jaci[/name_f] is has more sass.

  1. There are a few names I can think of off the top of my head that I have strictly favorite spellings for! Some cases are because I know people with the names who spell them a certain way, so that’s the way I spell them (eg. [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_u]Zoe[/name_u], [name_f]Cailey[/name_f], [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], [name_f]Hayley[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Jaycie[/name_f], and more I’m sure). Usually, I prefer the path of least resistance when it comes to spelling (AKA: the most intuitive/popular way to spell the name in my country or/and language), but my favorites can also be totally arbitrary. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] to me is always better with a K! [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f], and [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] are all supérieur to [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] for me. I prefer [name_u]Anne[/name_u] to [name_f]Ann[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]May[/name_f] to [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] to [name_f]Sara[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] to [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] to [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]. Et cetera!

  2. I’d spell these…

  • my-ah - [name_f]Maya[/name_f]
  • ky-ah - [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
  • ay-va - [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
  • ly-la - [name_f]Lyla[/name_f]
  • lay-la - [name_f]Layla[/name_f]
  • hay-lee - [name_f]Hayley[/name_f]
  • sky-ler - [name_u]Skyler[/name_u]
  • kay-lee - [name_f]Cailey[/name_f]
  • kath-rin - [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
  • kate-lin - [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]
  • kay-lin - [name_f]Kaylin[/name_f]
  • izz-uh-bel - [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
  • muh-kay-la - [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]
  • muh-kenn-na - McKenna
  • em-eh-leen - [name_f]Emmaline[/name_f]
  • jo-dee - [name_u]Jodie[/name_u]
  • jay-see - [name_f]Jaycie[/name_f]

I have a fairly strong preference for pretty much any name that has multiple options but these are the first one’s that came to mind:
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] > [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] > [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] > [name_f]Teresa[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] > [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f] > [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]

my-ah= [name_f]Maya[/name_f]
ky-ah= [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
ay-va= [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
ly-la= I go back and forth between [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] equally
lay-la= [name_f]Layla[/name_f]
hay-lee= [name_f]Hailey[/name_f]
sky-ler= [name_u]Skylar[/name_u]
kay-lee= [name_f]Kailey[/name_f]
kath-rin= [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
kate-lin= [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]
kay-lin= I can’t find a spelling I like for this one, none of them look right to me
izz-uh-bel= [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
muh-kay-la= [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]
muh-kenn-na= [name_f]Makenna[/name_f]
em-eh-leen= [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (although I usually prn this emma-line)
jo-dee= [name_u]Jody[/name_u]
jay-see= [name_f]Jacy[/name_f]
I tried to go with my top pick even though a few of these I have second choices that I also like. Different spellings do have slightly different vibes to me. Like [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is very graceful and feminine and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is much sassier and less girly. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is very sophisticated and sweeter while [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is very sharp and bold and [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] is also sweet but more in a girl-next-door way than Catherine’s fancy garden tea party way.

These are just a few!

2. How would you spell the following names and do the different spellings give you different images? If so, which ones?

  • my-ah — I’d spell this as [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. This spelling feels young, carefree, sprightly and sunny, whereas [name_f]Maia[/name_f] feels more maternal and older.
  • ky-ah — [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] would be my spelling. It feels serious yet lively!
  • ay-va — [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. Nothing much for differing imagery, as I’ve only seen it this way. :slightly_smiling_face:
  • ly-la — [name_f]Lila[/name_f]! It feels so purple-y and delicate, yet strong, a dancer’s name, whereas [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] feels almost rambunctious and noisy. :woman_shrugging:
  • lay-la — [name_f]Layla[/name_f]! I honestly have no imagery for this name, but I do prefer this spelling to Laila(h).
  • hay-lee — [name_u]Haley[/name_u] is very exciting to me, honestly! A zippy name! The vibes for all of the spellings are the same, but [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] feels more frilly and delicate.
  • sky-ler — [name_u]Skyler[/name_u] feels very unisex to me, something perhaps for a tomboyish girl. More masc. than [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], but with more femininity than some others.
  • kay-lee — [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] just looks the most natural, and feels sporty.
  • kath-rin — [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]! So refined and businesslike, with a bit of childhood charm.
  • kate-lin — [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]. Most familiar with the first spelling, which feels sporty and quick to me, but prefer the C, which has more of a sunny refinement. The other spellings fall in between.
  • kay-lin — [name_f]Kaelynn[/name_f] is the only spelling I’ve “met”, and it reminds me of the ocean for whatever reasons.
  • izz-uh-bel — [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]! It’s very blue to me, and elegant. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is pretty too, yellows and pinks, just not my style.
  • muh-kay-la — [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] Something off-putting to me about the McKayla spelling. Honestly this name is so cute— no-frills cheerleader type, like [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
  • muh-kenn-na — [name_f]Makenna[/name_f]! Same as above ^^
  • em-eh-leen — [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]! Feels very [name_u]French[/name_u] and elegant, whereas Emmaleen feels fakely European. :face_with_peeking_eye:
  • jo-dee — [name_u]Jodi[/name_u]. This spelling feels the most feminine, whereas [name_u]Jody[/name_u] feels masc. and [name_f]Jodee[/name_f] just made-up.
  • jay-see — JC? I honestly have no idea. :smiling_face_with_tear:

  1. Which names do you love spelled a certain way but really dislike in another (standard or not) spelling?
There are quite a few names that fit into this for me, actually. The first ones that come to mind are [name_f]Maia[/name_f] (not Maya), [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] (not Juliet), [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] (not Scarlett), and [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] (not Kyah)
  2. How would you spell the following names and do the different spellings give you different images? If so, which ones?
  • my-ah: [name_f]Maia[/name_f]
  • ky-ah: [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
  • ay-va: [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
  • ly-la: [name_f]Lila[/name_f]

Question One -
I’m not sure about this! I generally prefer the “original” spelling of names, but I don’t know any off the top of my head! Maybe [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]! I don’t really love the [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] spelling. I also prefer [name_f]Margot[/name_f] to [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] or [name_f]Margo[/name_f], as well as [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] over the other spellings.
Question Two -
[name_f]Mya[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Layla[/name_f]
[name_f]Hailey[/name_f]
[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] or [name_u]Skyler[/name_u], just depends!
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaylin[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Makayla[/name_f]
Mackennah (??)
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_u]Jodie[/name_u]
[name_u]Jaycee[/name_u]

  1. I’ve definitely noticed that sometimes different spellings of names give totally different vibes and one sounds far nicer to me than the other, sometimes to the point where it’s taken me a while to realize they sounded the same, though usually these tend to be names that are homophones but have separate origins. So for example Carrie sounds way prettier than Kerry to me Leah sounds way prettier than Lia. Other that type of thing I’m usually pretty indifferent when it comes to spelling as long as it isn’t so “creative” that it looks overly self-indulgent. Though the one preference I have with two common variants of the same name is Anna as opposed to Ana, it just looks incomplete and weird.

  • Maya (though every spelling I’ve seen works fine)
  • Kaia
  • Ava (I’m American so I have a very hard time visualizing Eva as being pronounced any way other than ee-va)
  • Lyla (this is one of those names where no spelling looks 100% right to me though)
  • Layla
  • Hailey
  • No preference either way
  • Kaylee feels more natural, but I like Kailey better
  • Catherine
  • Kaitlyn
  • Kalen? I don’t think I’ve ever heard this name though so I’m not entirely sure
  • Isabel
  • Makayla (Micheala is fine too but seems much more formal which doesn’t quite fit the sound in my opinion, and Makayla seems a lot more natural for someone my age)
  • Makena
  • Emmeline
  • Jody
  • Jaycie or Jacie (another one where no spelling feels perfect to me)
