My husband and I just found out we are pregnant last week. I have always been fascinated with names, so I can’t wait to name my own baby! The only problem is that my husband and I can’t seem to agree on any girl names (we’ve been talking about names for months). I think we’ve decided we want something sort of spunky. Here are the names we have considered, but I’ve also given the reasons I don’t think we can stick with them.
[name]Rue[/name] - I don’t like how it’s only one syllable and three letters. I wish it could be short for something but I don’t like the names it can be short for.
[name]Isla[/name] - I’m afraid it’s becoming too common, and I want something unique. Also, our last name begins with A so I’m afraid it doesn’t flow well.
[name]Audrey[/name] - too common?
[name]Quinn[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] it but he hates it
[name]Bristol[/name] - will people be able to get past [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name]?
[name]Finley[/name] - is this too trendy? I love the nn [name]Finn[/name].
[name]Scout[/name] - will people think that’s weird?
We also had [name]Audrey[/name] and [name]Scout[/name] on our list, but dropped [name]Audrey[/name] because it is too popular, and dropped [name]Scout[/name] because it wouldn’t age well. I can’t get into [name]Bristol[/name]. [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] are lovely. [name]Finley[/name] is all boy to me.
[name]Rue[/name] - I agree that it probably needs a “longer” name - [name]Rue[/name] just doesn’t feel full to me. Perhaps you could go with [name]Ruby[/name]?
[name]Isla[/name] - feels trendy, but not a terrible name. Suggestions: [name]Iris[/name], [name]Lila[/name], [name]Nina[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Audrey[/name]! she definitely has a Old Hollywood charm for me that I really like - another one of those names is [name]Clara[/name].
[name]Quinn[/name] - meh. [name]Quinn[/name] is a fine name, but it’s very unisex to me and that doesn’t scream spunky to me. Suggestions: [name]Gwen[/name] (or her longer variations, [name]Gwendolyn[/name]/[name]Gwendolen[/name] and [name]Gwyneth[/name]), [name]Wren[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Vivian[/name]/[name]Vivien[/name]/[name]Vivienne[/name], [name]Adrienne[/name], etc.
[name]Bristol[/name] - my least favorite from your list. [name]Bristol[/name] is very flat sounding compared to the rest of your list, which has some bounce/spunk to it.
[name]Finley[/name] - trendy
[name]Scout[/name] - this is more of a dog’s name to me. Sorry!
I don’t think [name]Scout[/name] would be weird. I would find it funny though if your kid became a girl or boy scout though - [name]Scout[/name] the scout.
[name]Rue[/name] could be short for any name that starts with Ru starting with [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Russia[/name], [name]Russet[/name], etc.
It feel like you are saying you want a more unique name but have chosen quite a few very popular names and rising stars.
[name]How[/name] about something like [name]Livia[/name], [name]Briar[/name], [name]Cyan[/name], [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Geneva[/name], [name]Clea[/name]
[name]Rue[/name] - Too short. I know a girl with this as a nickname (though I have no idea why it was her nn).
[name]Isla[/name] - NMS but it’s nice.
[name]Audrey[/name] - It is pretty popular, but it’s one of my all time favorites!
[name]Quinn[/name] - It’s ok.
[name]Bristol[/name] - I do kinda like it, but you’re right, my mind goes straight to the [name]Palin[/name] girl.
[name]Finley[/name] - [name]Way[/name] too trendy. Boy name to me anyways.
[name]Scout[/name] - Seems better for a dog.
Here are some other “spunky” names I can think of:
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Piper[/name]
[name]Paige[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Brooke[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]
[name]Josie[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Chloe[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Chelsea[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Kendra[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Brynn[/name]
[name]Rue[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] this as a nn for [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Ruth[/name], but sounds like those full names are not your style and it’d be tough to use [name]Rue[/name] on its own
[name]Isla[/name] - [name]Lovely[/name] and “sweetly” spunky. I don’t think it’s too common [name]IRL[/name].
[name]Audrey[/name] - I like the name, but I don’t see it as spunky… A little too plain and quiet, I think.
[name]Quinn[/name] - Great!
[name]Bristol[/name] - nope
[name]Finley[/name] - definitely too trendy
[name]Scout[/name] - I really like this name and think it is do-able
[name]Rue[/name] - Like you I like it as a nn
[name]Isla[/name] - Too common in my opinion, but still very pretty
[name]Audrey[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it, I know it’s common too, but it’s classic, whereas I feel [name]Isla[/name] is a bit more trendy
[name]Quinn[/name] - Too bad he doesn’t like it b/c it’s nice
[name]Bristol[/name] - I agree that many people might not be able to get past the [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name]
[name]Finley[/name] - too trendy in my opinion
[name]Scout[/name] - I have heard kids named [name]Atticus[/name], so I don’t think that [name]Scout[/name] will be too weird at all
Have you considered any of these names?
[name]Iris[/name] (it’s a repeat of other posts, but it’s a great name)
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Isla[/name] is a lovely name and I agree with the previous posters that [name]Rue[/name] seems like a nickname for [name]Ruth[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name]
I think you and I have a similar naming style! I love playful, spunky names - especially on girls. Here are my opnions on your names and a few suggestions of my own:
[name]Rue[/name] - I do agree that it is short, but it’s totally cute and spunky! Unfortunately I do think of the Hunger Games character when I think
of this name, but I don’t think everyone would associate with the book.
[name]Isla[/name] - I also love this name, but agree that it is getting a little too popular. That said, I could never see there being 5 [name]Isla[/name]'s in her class. I think this one is very spunky.
[name]Audrey[/name] - cute, classic and spunky. [name]Love[/name] it, but I probably wouldn’t use it because it’s just a little too common for my taste. But barely.
[name]Quinn[/name] - I also love this name, but I like it as short for [name]Quincy[/name]. I know [name]Quincy[/name] (and [name]Quinn[/name]) can be unisex, but growing up with a unisex name, it doesn’t really bother me.
[name]Bristol[/name] - No, I will never get past [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name], even though I could kind of like this name. I vote no on this. Plus it sounds stuffy and not spunky, in my opinion - kind of like you’re trying to hard.
[name]Finley[/name] - I love this name for a boy or a girl, and while it is a little trendy, I could still see myself using it. [name]Finn[/name] is just way too cute!
[name]Scout[/name] - I think this is a great name for a girl! It doens’t make me think of a pet at all, but maybe that’s because I love To Kill a Mockingbird so much.
I think [name]Isla[/name], [name]Scout[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name] would be my top choices. I think you have excellent taste!
Here are some other names I’m fond of, although they might be a little much for your taste:
[name]Matilda[/name] (nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name])
[name]Tallulah[/name] (nn [name]Lula[/name] or [name]Lilou[/name])
[name]Pepper[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] (nn [name]Immy[/name] or Idgy)
[name]Rue[/name] - see below
[name]Isla[/name] - I love this name but I too am afraid it’s becoming too trendy to use. Bummer! See below.
[name]Audrey[/name] - This is at least borderline classic to me, so I’d call it popular but not trendy. I like it.
[name]Quinn[/name] - Siding with yr hubs on this one. Too masculine. Have you considered [name]Quincy[/name]? More feminine, more uncommon, still spunky, can call her [name]Quin[/name] for short.
[name]Bristol[/name] - I have no problem with [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name], but I wouldn’t use this just b/c it’s so connected with her. It’s like [name]Gwyneth[/name] or [name]Angelina[/name]. There is [name]ONE[/name] famous person with the name so it’s welded to that association. I like it tho.
[name]Finley[/name] - way too trendy for me
[name]Scout[/name] - depends on where you are. In a big city, prob not. In a small town, or in the South, probably. [name]Even[/name] still, I’d give her a “real name,” like maybe [name]Scarlett[/name], and let [name]Scout[/name] be a nickname. [name]Scout[/name] as a given name is too limiting. Give her some versatility for when she gets older. There will probably never be a President [name]Scout[/name].
I like [name]Rue[/name] by itself ok, but I don’t blame you for wanting something with more versatility and substance.
Alternatives to [name]Isla[/name]:
[name]Ailsa[/name] - love this!
[name]Ilsa[/name]
[name]Elia[/name] - [name]ELL[/name]-ee-uh
[name]Arla[/name]
[name]Ayla[/name]
[name]Eila[/name] - same pronunciation as [name]Isla[/name] but a totally different name
[name]Ruthie[/name]?
[name]Quinn[/name] I love.
[name]Hazel[/name]?
Emberley
[name]Kenzie[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name] I love and what do you think of [name]Audria[/name], Audryn, [name]Aubria[/name], or Aubryn?
[name]Bree[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Rue[/name] is really sweet. I like short, one syllable names though…
[name]Isla[/name] - too trendy
[name]Audrey[/name] - is lovely, but maybe a bit too popular. It is too popular for me, but I do like it.
[name]Quinn[/name] is super cute - a bit trendy though
[name]Bristol[/name] - not a fan - I think of bristol board
[name]Finley[/name] is one unisex name I like on a girl, but I don’t care for [name]Finn[/name] on either gender. Reminds me of fins on fish and I hate fish. haha
[name]Scout[/name] is weird. It was the name of my family’s dog. I like the idea of it, but some word names are odd on people. It would make a really great middle name though.
From your choices I do love [name]Finley[/name] and [name]Audrey[/name]. I don’t find them too common, trendy or popular at the moment.
Some other really spunky names you might like are
[name]Rue[/name] - I like it as a NN for the Biblical Ruhama, but pretty much no one but me likes Ruhama.
[name]Isla[/name] - It’s a bit soft and pretty to be truly spunky to me. Maybe [name]Ismay[/name], [name]Isis[/name], or [name]Imogen[/name]?
[name]Audrey[/name] - In the Top Hundred already and still climbing. And I also, admittedly, just hate it.
[name]Quinn[/name] - Prefer as a NN to [name]Quintana[/name] or similar.
[name]Bristol[/name] - Does anyone actually think [name]Bristol[/name] is a nice city? And how is it spunky? Sorry, I guess I don’t get it. Would prefer [name]Briar[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], or [name]Beatriz[/name].
[name]Scout[/name] - I don’t think its interesting.
