Sorry if this has been posted, I didn’t see it! I was wondering if anyone has looked at their state lists? I’m always really surprised at how different my state’s list is compared to the national list. Have you found anything interesting on yours? Here are some things I noticed:
[name]Jayden[/name] is #4 nationally, #35 in MN
[name]Henry[/name] is #57 nationally, #13 in MN
[name]Nolan[/name] is #93 nationally, #21 in MN
[name]Asher[/name] is #113 nationall, #60 in MN
[name]Harper[/name] is #54 nationally, #28 in MN
[name]Ruby[/name] is #109 nationally, #71 in MN
[name]Hazel[/name] is #211 nationally, #90 in MN
[name]Zoey[/name] is still more popular than [name]Zoe[/name] (#37/#56)
[name]Riley[/name] is still more popular for boys (#69/#95)
And sadly a lot of my favorite names have gone up in popularity! I think they did nationally too, but moreso here. [name]Audrey[/name] is now #22
This is so interesting! I love looking at the differences in naming trends in different areas. I am from the South but now live in Michigan. In my home state, [name]Caroline[/name] is in the top 15 and it doesn’t even make the top 100 in MI. From the stats you mentioned, I think MN has better naming taste than the US in general!
Some interesting things about 2011 names in MI…
[name]Violet[/name] is #101 nationally, #78 in MI
[name]Paige[/name] is #107 nationally, #68 in MI
[name]London[/name] is #94 nationally, #48 in MI
[name]Brooklynn[/name] is #129 nationally, #51 in MI
[name]Alivia[/name] is #191 nationally, #81 in MI
[name]Carter[/name] is #41 nationally, #8 in MI
[name]William[/name] is #3 nationally, #23 in MI
[name]Owen[/name] is #44 nationally, #19 in MI
[name]Logan[/name] is #20 nationally, #4 in MI
[name]Adrian[/name] is #56 nationally, #96 in MI
[name]Blake[/name] is #73 nationally, #37 in MI
Easton 102 nationally vs. 40 in IA
Hudson 112 nationally vs. 69 in IA
Lincoln 178 nationally vs. 71 in IA
Avery fell off the list completely
Most of the names that have risen fast don’t surprise me as they all sound very cowboy to me
Brynn 190 nationally vs. 47 in IA
Brielle 126 nationally vs. 78 in IA
Annabelle 111 nationally vs. 82 in IA
Violet 101 nationally vs. 93 in IA
Willow 202 nationally vs. 94 in IA
Paisley 195 nationally vs. 103 in IA
Harper & Hadley are also really high here but that doesn’t surprise me.
I’ve noticed [name]Carter[/name] seems to be super popular in the midwest area. I think I saw it was #1 in Iowa? It’s higher here than it is nationally. I also noticed that we don’t like a lot of the trendy names here. I mentioned [name]Jayden[/name] being way lower here. I was looking at the top 5 for each state and saw that [name]Jayden[/name] was top 5 in a lot of the southern states. Totally different naming styles!
A lot of trendy names and unisex names in OH. Some that suprised me:
[name]Lillian[/name] is 22 nationally, 10 in OH
[name]Payton[/name] is 95 nationally, 39 in OH
[name]Reagan[/name] is 122 nationally, 57 in OH
[name]Alivia[/name] is 191 nationally, 98 in OH
[name]Brynn[/name] is 190 nationally, 99 in OH
[name]Carter[/name] is 41 nationally, 11 in OH
[name]Jayden[/name] is 4 nationally, 20 in OH
[name]Colton[/name] is 74 nationally, 39 in OH
[name]Jaxon[/name] is 140 nationally, 76 in OH
[name]Grant[/name] is 151 nationally, 85 in OH
[name]Maxwell[/name] is 134 nationally, 89 in OH
[name]Peyton[/name] is 166 nationally, 92 in OH
[name]Braxton[/name] is 153 nationally, 93 in OH
[name]Camden[/name] is 160 nationally, 96 in OH
[name]Mason[/name] is #1 for boys, [name]Emma[/name] is #1 for girls.
Hardly any of the names on my list are in the Top 100 in my state. I’ll take that as a good thing.
I live in [name]CA[/name] - [name]Jacob[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] are the respective #1’s. Interesting things from the list:
Names much more popular in [name]CA[/name] than nationally:
BOYS
[name]Daniel[/name] - #2 in [name]CA[/name], #10 nationally
[name]Angel[/name] - #12 in [name]CA[/name], #52 nationally
[name]Sebastian[/name] - #33 in [name]CA[/name], #68 nationally
[name]Damian[/name] - #52 in [name]CA[/name], #138 nationally
[name]Ivan[/name] - #54 in [name]CA[/name], #128 nationally
GIRLS
[name]Camila[/name] - #11 in [name]CA[/name], #48 nationally
[name]Kimberly[/name] - #19 in [name]CA[/name], #67 nationally
[name]Andrea[/name] - #21 in [name]CA[/name], #81 nationally
[name]Valeria[/name] - #35 in [name]CA[/name], #125 nationally
[name]Giselle[/name] - #46 in [name]CA[/name], #152 nationally
[name]Daisy[/name] - #81 in [name]CA[/name], #166 nationally
Names much less popular in [name]CA[/name] than nationally:
BOYS
[name]Mason[/name] - #2 nationally, #19 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]William[/name] - #3 nationally, #31 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name] - #23 nationally, #51 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]Owen[/name] - #44 nationally, #91 in [name]CA[/name]
GIRLS
[name]Addison[/name] - #13 nationally, #65 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name] - #22 nationally, #99 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]Gabriella[/name] - #34 nationally, #73 in [name]CA[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] - #57 nationally, #89 in [name]CA[/name] (the only name on my list that’s in the Top 100 on either of these lists - love that it’s lower in [name]CA[/name])
I’m surprised and glad that the names are pretty tame. Also love that the boy-name-on-girls trend isn’t big, since I like “girly” boys names. Besides [name]Ashley[/name] (#30 for girls) none of my boy names made the list. And I was already losing interest in the only girl name- [name]Charlotte[/name] #56
esrever88, I was noticing the other day that [name]CA[/name] seems to be a little behind in names. It’s like they’re stuck in late 90s, early 2000s. For example, [name]Stephanie[/name], [name]Jessica[/name], [name]Vanessa[/name], [name]Nicole[/name], [name]Jennifer[/name], [name]Melissa[/name], [name]Valerie[/name], and [name]Jacqueline[/name] were all in the top 100, and [name]Ashley[/name] and [name]Kimberly[/name] were much highter there than most other states. [name]Do[/name] you find this in everyday life when you meet kids?
[name]Landon[/name] - only 34 on the national chart
[name]Noah[/name]
[name]Aiden[/name]
[name]Hunter[/name] - only 55 on the national chart
[name]Elijah[/name]
[name]Brayden[/name] - only 37 on the national chart
[name]Bentley[/name] - 57 on the national chart
[name]Gavin[/name] - 36 on the national chart
Also [name]Brantley[/name] is at 96 in WV but 320 in the nation. This is why I am so tired of hearing [name]Landon[/name] and [name]Hunter[/name], especially [name]Hunter[/name]!
Girls:
[name]Isabella[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Madison[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Addison[/name]
[name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Ava[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Alexis[/name]
[name]Chloe[/name]
Also [name]Paisley[/name] is at 41 in WV but 195 in the nation
My son’s name [name]Hunter[/name] is #48 & my daughter’s name [name]Zoe[/name] is #52. But the [name]Zoey[/name] spelling is #37.
The dreaded [name]Nevaeh[/name] is #36! [name]Matthew[/name] is #15. I’m surprised that one is that high, but there’s actually ALOT of traditional boy’s names on PA’s top 101.
You know, I do find it interesting that some of those very 80’s/90’s names are ranked so highly here, especially since [name]CA[/name] is considered so “fashion forward”. I do know a 1-year-old [name]Jennifer[/name], but I haven’t heard any of the other names (on children, anyway) in my area. It seems like every other kid I meet is named [name]Mason[/name] or [name]Violet[/name], actually.
I gotta say, though, that I much prefer [name]Kimberly[/name], [name]Andrea[/name] and [name]Jennifer[/name] to [name]Addison[/name], [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name], none of which are as popular here as they are nationally (though I’ve heard all three in my area).
[name]CA[/name] is such a huge state! I’m sure the fashion-forward areas are on the [name]Mason[/name]/[name]Violet[/name] bandwagon. I live in a small state and our stats still didn’t match up to the names of the new babies I meet.
I’m very impressed! [name]Evelyn[/name]'s number 9 for girls, and [name]Abigail[/name] is 8th. I like that [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Noah[/name] are high up too, and [name]Benjamin[/name] is a nice one for the tenth slot.
I’m also amused by seeing [name]Liam[/name] as #2, and [name]William[/name] at #3.
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Lauren[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]
[name]Molly[/name] (It’s ranked higher than [name]Peyton[/name] and [name]Arianna[/name] and [name]Ariana[/name])
[name]Autumn[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Liliana[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] is number 100
While a lot of the above aren’t my style, it’s so nice to see varying styles that aren’t trendy in the top 100. I would’ve never expected to see [name]Charles/name ranked higher than [name]Ayden[/name] (#96)!
[name]Benjamin[/name] (#10) is higher than [name]Aiden[/name] (#14), [name]Brayden[/name] and [name]Jayden[/name] are at 29 and 27 respectively. ([name]Isaac[/name] is smack in the middle at 28)
I love that my top names for a boy and girl aren’t on the top 100 list!
[name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Alessandra[/name]/[name]Alexia[/name].
It’s just refreshing, since [name]Liam[/name] used to be my top boys name and that’s ranked #2 on this list.
#48 nationwide, #13 in NV - [name]Camila[/name] #55 nationwide, #16 in NV - [name]Alexa[/name] #67 nationwide, #23 in NV - [name]Kimberly[/name] #74 nationwide, #28 in NV - [name]Jasmine[/name] #82 nationwide, #36 in NV - [name]Genesis[/name] #16 nationwide, #40 in NV - [name]Grace[/name] #81 nationwide, #46 in NV - [name]Andrea[/name] #113 nationwide, #49 in NV - [name]Jade[/name] #152 nationwide, #54 in NV - [name]Giselle[/name] (one of my faves!) #140 nationwide, #63 in NV - [name]Izabella[/name] (yes, with a Z) #93 nationwide, #65 in NV - [name]Naomi[/name] #157 nationwide, #68 in NV - [name]Aria[/name] #172 nationwide, #72 in NV - [name]Delilah[/name] (a whopping 100 slots ahead!?) #25 nationwide, #80 in NV - [name]Hannah[/name]
Also surprised to see [name]Valentina[/name] squeak onto the list, tied with [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Ximena[/name] for #100. The #1 girl name in NV is [name]Sophia[/name].
#52 nationwide, #11 in NV - [name]Angel[/name] #56 nationwide, #16 in NV - [name]Adrian[/name] #68 nationwide, #30 in NV - [name]Sebastian[/name] #138 nationwide, #49 in NV - [name]Damian[/name] #88 nationwide, #50 in NV - [name]Luis[/name] #99 nationwide, #55 in NV - [name]Diego[/name] #117 nationwide, #56 in NV - [name]Giovanni[/name] #149 nationwide, #79 in NV - [name]Leonardo[/name] #130 nationwide, #81 in NV - [name]Alejandro[/name] #132 nationwide, #82 in NV - [name]Axel[/name] #176 nationwide, #90 in NV - [name]Andres[/name] (close to [name]Andre[/name], a recent fave of mine) #184 nationwide, #98 in NV - [name]Eduardo[/name]
I was looking at my state list (Ohio) again, and a couple of things stood out:
[name]Jordan[/name] is more popular for BOYS in my state. It didn’t even make the Top 100 for girls in Ohio. It’s 55 for boys.
With all the alternate spellings, [name]Jackson[/name]/[name]Jaxon[/name]/[name]Jaxson[/name] is really the most popular boys name in my state. And that’s without adding in [name]Jack[/name].
Also, a question. Is [name]Alivia[/name] supposed to be an alternate of [name]Olivia[/name]? Because it’s in the Top 100, and I just don’t get it. It’s not visually attractive in the least.
[name]Alabama[/name] is pretty similar to the national average for gals. The only big difference was [name]Anna[/name].
[name]Emma[/name] (3 nationally)
[name]Ava[/name] (5 nationally)
[name]Madison[/name] (8 nationally)
[name]Olivia[/name] --same
[name]Isabella[/name] (2 nationally)
[name]Addison[/name] (13 nationally)
[name]Chloe[/name] (10 nationally)
[name]Elizabeth[/name] (11 nationally)
[name]Abigail[/name] (7 nationally)
[name]Anna[/name] –#38 nationally
For boys, there were a few differences. It looks like we have more ‘traditional’ names in the top ten, including [name]James[/name] and [name]John[/name], also [name]Jackson[/name].
[name]Camila[/name] is #48 nationally
[name]Amelia[/name] #30 nationally, drops down to #82
[name]Axel[/name] #132 nationally is #65
[name]Santiago[/name] #131 nationally is #51, but I’m not really surprised by the latin influences in our list.
Apparently it is (Meaning, origin and history of the name Alivia - Behind the Name). I consider them two different names personally just because they sound different [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Alivia[/name] = ah-liv-ee-ah and [name]Olivia[/name] = oh-liv-ee-ah.
