SSA list is killing me 😭

So our top names for baby #3 were [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (we’re still going back and forth) and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. All of which are higher than I expected on the SSA list and even more so in our state. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is our youngest’s name and we struggled with how popular it was. Hellppppp.

What would you name a sibling to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]!?

I feel ya :disappointed:

Well, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] & [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] are two of my top names, so I’ll suggest [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] for a girl! [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is my other favourite boy name, but it was #3 last year so that doesn’t really help w the popularity issue… Maybe [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]?

I totally understand. I knew the name we have picked for our baby girl due in [name_u]November[/name_u] was a top 50 name and I had accepted that because we love it and have loved it since before it was even a top 100 name. And then the SSA list came out and her name went up the charts more than I expected in the US and in my state. I had a mini freak out, but realized that we love the name and our son is named [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] which we love despite its popularity. Neither name is anywhere near as popular as my name was the year I was born and I still love my name as an adult.

For me, I had to get realistic about what is actually too popular for me to consider using. I also looked at how many girls got my name the year I was born and it helped me realize that a lot less kids get top 10 or top 20 names now in comparison to the late 80’s when I was born so even a number 1 name is not nearly as popular as a number 1 name once was.

If they are too popular for you now here are some suggestions:
-[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
-[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
-[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
-[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
-[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (maybe totally random, but I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] would be adorable together)

-[name_u]Maxwell[/name_u]
-[name_m]Franklin[/name_m] (probably too presidential with a [name_m]Theodore[/name_m])
-[name_u]Leland[/name_u]
-Fredrick

Personally, I would stick to the names I love ([name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]) and pick an unexpected nickname for them. Changing the name due to its popularity alone could lead to regret later for not using the name you have loved and has been a leading contender on your list.

For example, while [name_m]Seb[/name_m] may be a popular nn for [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]Ash[/name_u] and [name_m]Baz[/name_m] are not.

Amelie or [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] are less popular alternatives to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]

Florence or [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] for a girl maybe even [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]

For a boy maybe [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], or [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]

I understand your feelings. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is nearing the top 10 in my state and I know no less than 3 people in my social circle with daughters named [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] so we won’t be using it as a first name. It makes me sad because I’ve adored [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] since I was in grade school, but fortunately there are a lot of other names I love too. (Similarly, we went with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] as a middle with our son because we love the name but know several Theodores and Theos. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is also a possible future middle for us!)

With [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but not as popular as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], or [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

I would 10000% keep Sebastian.

Eloise, Theodore, and…

  • Penelope
  • Penelope Amelia might make a nice FN/MN combo, depending on your LN.

Yup, I’d 100% keep Penelope, too.
