[name]Juliet[/name] - a beautiful classic with a wonderful literary connection and good nickname options ([name]Julie[/name], [name]Jules[/name] and even [name]Ettie[/name]). I don’t think that this will get too popular - I know quite a few [name]Julias[/name] and Juliets of various ages, but I don’t think there is going to be a boom in babies named [name]Juliet[/name] the same way there was with [name]Lily[/name].
[name]Esme[/name] - another very pretty name. It is definitely coming back, perhaps brought back to attention by Twilight, and certainly in favour because of the current vintage naming trend, but I can’t see it becoming uber-popular.
[name]Greta[/name] - a stylish, vintage choice, but personally I found the GR and T sounds harsh in such quick succession … I also feel like it should be a nn for [name]Margaret[/name], not really a stand-alone name.
[name]Josephine[/name] - an absolute classic, with lots of sweet nn options - [name]Jo[/name] and [name]Josie[/name], but also [name]Posy[/name], [name]Ephie[/name] and Sephie.
[name]Magdalene[/name] - I adore this as an unusual way to get to the nn [name]Maggie[/name], and think it is a superbly pretty, unusual, elegant choice.
Of your choices, [name]Greta[/name] is my least favourite. [name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Magdalene[/name] are my favourites. Second place probably goes to [name]Josephine[/name], simply because of the nn options, but I like [name]Esme[/name] a lot, too.
I think these combinations sound great :
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Magdalene[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Esme[/name] [name]Jane[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Jane[/name] (offers the nn [name]Gigi[/name], too).
Good luck!
[name]Josephine[/name]- A lovely classic. As of right now, it’s the most popular of your choices, but it’s only in the 200s (U.S.), which isn’t too popular (for me, at least)
[name]Juliet[/name]- I think it’s gorgeous, too. However, I do still think of The tragic Shakespearean character.
[name]Esme[/name]- [name]Esme[/name] might increase in popularity within the next few years, but it’s not even in the top 1000 (U.S.) as of '08. In [name]Britain[/name], though, it’s in the top 100 ('08). I am positive that this Twilight craze will not last forever. On the bright side, the Twilight character wasn’t a bad one.
[name]Greta[/name]- I like it as a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name], but, like Twinkle, I think it’s too harsh on it’s own.
[name]Magdalene[/name]- I think it’s pretty, and I love the nicknames [name]Maggie[/name] and [name]Lena[/name].
Your list is full of beautiful names, but I voted for [name]Josephine[/name]. All the names are fabulous, though.
I love [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Magdalene[/name]. I voted for [name]Magdalene[/name], I love the nickname [name]Maggie[/name]
I voted for [name]Juliet[/name] - so lovely! The one [name]Juliet[/name] I know is named [name]Juliet[/name] [name]Alice[/name], so I’m a little biased toward that combo.
My second choice is [name]Greta[/name]. I’ve never thought of it as harsh before, although I can see where those people are coming from.
[name]Hi[/name]!
I love [name]Magdalene[/name], but I much prefer the [name]Magdalen[/name] spelling, myself. I think [name]Magdalen[/name] [name]Alice[/name] would be a beautiful name for your daughter-to-be!
My second idea is [name]Magdalena[/name], and I think [name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Jane[/name] works, but [name]Magdalena[/name] [name]June[/name], [name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Joy[/name], [name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Claire[/name], or even [name]Magdalena[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] would be better, I think…
My second choice off your list is [name]Josephine[/name], I think, because I like [name]Josie[/name] as a nickname.
Take care!
[name]Lemon[/name]
Can I just say that I love the name [name]Esme[/name]. My husband would have nothing to do with it, but I love it.
Then I learned that there is this little show / movie / book called Twilight and that [name]Esme[/name] was very much associated with it. Who knew? I’m not into American pop-culture that much, being an old fogie who lives in a different country. But really – I wouldn’t let Twilight influence this. [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], maybe. Twilight – no. Husband, maybe. Twilight, no.
I love [name]Esme[/name]. Another, similar name that which is also making a comeback is [name]Isla[/name]. Gorgeous. Not allowed to have either in this household, but I digress.
[name]Josephine[/name] is another favorite of mine. I used to work in a nursing home and there was ONE [name]Josephine[/name] among a million Lillians, Gertrudes, Mabels, etc. I think [name]Josephine[/name] is a lovely name, and [name]Josie[/name] is a gorgeou nickname.
Thanks everyone!
This is very helpful! Based on your comments and sleeping on it . . . I guess I have a few more months to decide if it’ll be [name]Esme[/name], [name]Juliet[/name] or [name]Josephine[/name]. I love all three for different reasons. It will be tough! ; )
I tend to agree that [name]Greta[/name] is a bit harsh sounding and wouldn’t consider [name]Margaret[/name]. I love [name]Magdalene[/name] but DH isn’t as much of a fan and I don’t really love [name]Maggie[/name] as a nickname.
Thanks again for the votes and comments.
[name]Greta[/name] [name]Alice[/name]/[name]Greta[/name] [name]Alice[/name] [name]Jane[/name]!!!
I love this name, it’s so beautiful and unusual.
I voted for [name]Juliet[/name] but love [name]Josephine[/name] as well…
