Sterling or Huck

Hello, we need help deciding on a baby name. We’ve always called our baby [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] since before we even knew the gender. It’s just a nickname to me, but my husband is attached and won’t let go. I made a list of names and we both like [name_u]Sterling[/name_u]. I just want something with a good ring to it. We are attached to [name_m]Luc[/name_m] as a middle name. It’s a family name. Which do you think sounds better and how can I convince my husband that [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m] sounds too choppy but he could still be nicknamed [name_m]Huck[/name_m] even if we name him [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m]?

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] that you actually want to use [name_u]Sterling[/name_u]! Go for it! And I think [name_m]Huck[/name_m] could be a nn anyway! I have an uncle named [name_m]Stan[/name_m] who was called “[name_m]Butch[/name_m]” growing up, lol!

I vote for [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] nn [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] just doesnt work.

[name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Birch[/name_m] is better. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it’s not perfect that they become a description ’ a sterling birch.’ I agree to save [name_m]Huck[/name_m] for a nn. OR, to make the flow of the name better, [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Birch[/name_m] nn [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. I love [name_m]Huck[/name_m], so I understand his attachment. But never for a proper name.

I think [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] flows better. You could always go with [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] or [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] since you said you’ve already been calling him [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m], and then you could use the nn [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. You could still use [name_m]Huck[/name_m] even if you didn’t include it in the name though. Lots of people go by nicknames that are completely unrelated to their actual name.

Got anything in between? [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] seems so pretentious, and [name_m]Huck[/name_m] is so backwoodsy…I’d never expect them to turn up in the same family. Nothing wrong with either, though. I think [name_m]Huck[/name_m] could be used as a nn for any male, regardless of the formal name. I’d expect it more for a [name_m]Henry[/name_m], though.

I love the suggestion of [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] NN [name_m]Huck[/name_m]. I am not a fan of [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] but [name_m]Huck[/name_m] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] is definitely too choppy. Are you set on [name_m]Luc[/name_m] no matter what? If so, what about [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] NN [name_m]Huck[/name_m]?

Oh, this is great feedback! Thanks for all the thoughts. I’m still set in my thought. Yes, we’re set on [name_m]Luc[/name_m] for the mn. Husband’s brother just passed away during this pregnancy and his middle name was [name_m]Luc[/name_m] so we want to carry that on.

You’re so right rkrd! They are miles apart in meaning, it is odd that those are the two that we selected.

I also agree on [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] nn/ [name_m]Huck[/name_m]

My son’s name is [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] so I am very partial, but I actually found your thread because I am considering [name_m]Huck[/name_m] as my next child’s name haha. [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] is near perfection. A short first name like [name_m]Huck[/name_m] needs a 2 syllable or more middle name, especially since your last name is one syllable as well.

I like the idea of [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_m]Luc[/name_m] [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m]. I’d just go with the full [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] rather than trying to shorten it to [name_m]Huck[/name_m].
