Sterling or Stirling?

Which one is the preferred or correct spelling for [name_u]Sterling[/name_u]/Stirling. I have always seen very mixed comments about which is the right way. What do you think of it? I am also slightly leaning towards [name_m]Steen[/name_m] which gives me very similar vibes.

I am also struggling to come up with middle names to go with a combo.

This is just for fun I must say as I am not expecting but trying to switch my list up!

I have only ever met people who spell the name “[name_u]Sterling[/name_u]” with an E, I don’t know which version is actually correct though.

I’m not sure which is technically more correct, but I prefer [name_u]Sterling[/name_u]! I’ve known of one [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] but never anybody called [name_m]Stirling[/name_m].

I’d lean toward [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] as I think more people know this word (maybe the association with sterling silver, I’m not sure why I think this). I’d worry that people would think to spell the name as [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] and your kid would spend their life correcting them with the [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] spelling. I often have to spell my first name and find it irritating but that might not be a deal breaker for you.

I feel that [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] looks more like a name - even though it is a word too, as in sterling silver. [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] feels very ‘verb-y’ to me - no idea if that makes sense. [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] [name_m]Moss[/name_m] did spell it that way though…

Sterling looks correct to me and more aesthetically pleasing.

I prefer [name_u]Sterling[/name_u], and see the name as masculine. I also believe this is the “correct” version, as in [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] [name_u]Silver[/name_u]. I’ve never seen [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] and honestly it doesn’t work for me personally.

Steen is also usable, though not my style.

Sterling for sure, just because it doesn’t have a random word in it (“stir”)

Thank you everyone! [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] it is (for now at least!)

‘I personally think that Sterling is more of a boyish spelling and Stirling is more of a girlish spelling.’

This is also my experience with the name.

THe “Stir’ part isn’t appealingly to me, so Id go with [name_u]Sterling[/name_u]. I don’t also suggest [name_u]Steele[/name_u] as a nice compromise between [name_m]Steen[/name_m] [name_u]Andy[/name_u] STERLING

They are two different names with different origins and meanings. Use the one that you like the origin and meaning more.

Sterling will be the default spelling for most, but [name_m]Stirling[/name_m] does remind me of the town in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u].
