[name]Hi[/name] again,
I posted before [name]Christmas[/name] about my struggle to find a boys name and I’m still no further along in my search and would really like some more suggestions.
I originally had [name]Tobin[/name] on my very short list but have discounted it now because (to me anyway) it feels too similar in sound to my daughter [name]Imogen[/name]. I’ve thought about the alternatives of [name]Tobias[/name] or [name]Tobiah[/name] but am not really a fan of either.
I really like the meaning of [name]Asher[/name] and want to love the name but I just don’t feel like it is “the one”.
I like [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Everett[/name] but DH doesn’t like either of them (although I may be able to use one as a mn).
Recently I’ve also considered:
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Archer[/name]
I’m looking for suggestions of classic/traditional sounding names of 2 or 3 syllables, that aren’t hugely popular but are still recognisable. Please no names that start with J or G. I feel like I’ve read every list out there and maybe I’m just suffering from baby name overload - but I’m sure that there is a fresh and wonderful name out there for this baby boy, I just haven’t found it yet.
I adore [name]Tobias[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Everett[/name] and [name]Bennett[/name] so hopefully I can help you. [name]Imogen[/name] is also on my girls list too.
I understand-- [name]Tobin[/name] and [name]Imogen[/name] do share a lot of sounds.
Paired with crisp, Celtic [name]Imogen[/name], I think a boys’ name which is similarly serious yet romantic, not at all frilly, would be the way to go. Of your three suggestions, I think [name]Bennett[/name] absolutely fits the bill perfectly.
I love [name]August[/name] but it doesn’t work with our surname - just a funny flow unfortunately.
[name]Oliver[/name] - [name]WAY[/name] too popular where I live (number 3 in 2011)
[name]Rafferty[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name] have been vetoed by DH
[name]Caspar[/name] - our dog’s name (strangely we were able to name the dog in less than an hour!), but that rules out any other [name]Cas[/name]…names too.
[name]Thayer[/name]…interesting, could grow on me
@blade - you are absolutely right, I am looking for “serious yet romantic, not at all frilly” you couldn’t have put it better! My main issue with [name]Bennett[/name] is that is is the surname of a rather contentious politician in my part of the world and she gets a lot of media time.
I appreciate all the ideas so far, please keep them coming.
I like [name]Archer[/name] but the nn [name]Archie[/name] is given quite commonly as a fn on it’s own here. The other problem I have is that we have have a long, hyphenated surname (which is multi-ethnic) so I’d prefer a first name that doesn’t sound too much like a surname - at the risk of the poor boy sounding like he has 3 surnames. I realise I have suggested a few of these myself already though.
Thanks again for the suggestions, I appreciate the help (and clearly need it since I just have no idea!)
[name]Just[/name] to update - today the 2012 names were released where I live. [name]Asher[/name] has never featured in the Top 100 here before and has come in at 95. I was thinking it would be quite uncommon here, I guess not! [name]Toby[/name] came in at 51 (but no [name]Tobin[/name], [name]Tobias[/name] or [name]Tobiah[/name]) and [name]Archie[/name] came in at 68 (but no [name]Archer[/name]). No sign of [name]Bennet[/name] - but [name]Benjamin[/name] is in 15th, so still likely to be a lot of little boys called “[name]Ben[/name]” running around.
In case anyone is interested - [name]Jack[/name] was back in 1st place again, for the 6th time in the last 9 years.
Does anyone know when the SSA are likely to put out their 2012 lists?
Thanks for the further suggestions.
I like [name]Alastair[/name] - DH has a negative association with this one
[name]Harrison[/name] - quite popular here
[name]Ezra[/name] - a couple of you have suggested this and it’s starting to grow on me - although I know it has a strong religious meaning and we are not a strongly religious family (I don’t want my name choice to offend people or make us seem hypocritical)
[name]Soren[/name] - I really like as a name, but the meaning of “stern” doesn’t really appeal
[name]Stellan[/name] - I quite like this and it has a nice meaning, but the girl name [name]Stella[/name] is pretty big here and I worry that it’s too similar sounding
It’s proving to be a challenge, that’s for sure! I feel like I’m trying to find a needle in a haystack with this name search. I’ve even gone back over more popular names which I had previously ignored, to see if there is one that I actually really like and would use despite the popularity, but still no luck…
If you like [name]Soren[/name] and [name]Stellan[/name], try [name]Sylvan[/name] (I think I just wrote this in another thread. Maybe I’m going crazy).
[name]Fletcher[/name] is a good alternative to [name]Archer[/name]
Also, [name]Imogen[/name] and:
[name]Simeon[/name]
[name]Sidney[/name]
[name]Sterling[/name]
[name]Edmund[/name] (or [name]Eamon[/name], but that’s already been said and sounds similar to [name]Imogen[/name])
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
Aidrick
[name]Jones[/name]
Thanks Sparrowfinch - I did see your suggestion of [name]Sylvan[/name] on another thread which is asking a similar question to mine - so no, you aren’t going crazy
DH is sitting looking at names and has also just suggested [name]Sterling[/name], but I’m not a fan.
[name]Fletcher[/name] is great, but my good friend has it lined up for a future boy and I just couldn’t use it on those grounds.
I actually quite like [name]Jude[/name] for a boy but DH says it is a girls name - even though he has just told me that [name]Vivian[/name] is a unisex name??? Let’s just say his naming style is very different from mine!
