Still not happy with our boys' names, help?

Y’all are probably sick of hearing from me about this but in case you don’t remember, SO and I are due in early [name_u]November[/name_u] with baby #1. We find out what we’re having in less than 2 weeks but for now we’re still trying to settle on boys’ names. LN is a one-syllable word name starting with the letter B.

Right now our front-runner is [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I like it, but I’m not 100% in love with it - SO prefers it to my suggestion, which is [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. And while I really like [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], I’m not 100% in love with that either… it’s pretty clunky, and it seems harder to wear than [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m].

I’m really hoping for some great NB suggestions based on those two names, and/or the names that have been rejected, which I’ll share below. For personal reasons I can’t share the MN that we’ve chosen, but it ends in -er.

Rejected names:
Galahad - too grand/one person name
[name_m]Beowulf[/name_m] - see Galahad
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] - my bff’s son’s MN & a family name for her
[name_u]August[/name_u] - SO doesn’t like it
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] - SO doesn’t like it
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - rhymes too much with the MN
[name_m]Bertram[/name_m]/[name_m]Bernard[/name_m] - SO says it’s too geeky
[name_m]Gavin[/name_m] - this is an immediate family surname on SO’s side
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] - way too trendy/popular [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
[name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] - SO was like “And yet you think Galahad is too much.”

“Maybe” names:
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]/[name_m]Augustine[/name_m] - a compromise on [name_u]August[/name_u], but maybe too much name for my taste
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - also a lot of name, and I’ve heard there’s a religious connection to this somehow?
[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] - we hesitate to use this because of the Hobbit movies recently
[name_u]Loren[/name_u] - we both like it but don’t love it, and it might be a pain to be a boy named [name_u]Loren[/name_u]

Thoughts/suggestions? Convince me one way or the other on our two front-runners? [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I’m just going to say this up front, we have totally different naming styles, but I’ll try my best to give some objective help. I have to agree that [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is more wearable than [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. From your “maybe” list, I like [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is alright (A quick search on Google tells me that St. [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is the patron saint of Cancer patients. That’s the only religious tie I could find).

I like the sound of [name_u]Loren[/name_u], but I get what you mean about it being hard for a boy with a name so close to [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]. [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] is very Tolkein-esque to me, but it seems like you like fanciful, unusual names like the ones from his books.

If I absolutely had to choose, I’d probably pick [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. It’s a lot fresher than [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] I feel, and it’s slightly off beat without being totally unwearable. If you must, you could always shorten it to the nickname [name_u]August[/name_u]. I also don’t see the problem with using [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] as your baby’s first name, but I guess I understand if you want this child to have a name that;s completely its own.

Here are a few names that I think might match your style:

[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_m]Lars[/name_m]
[name_u]Rohan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ammon[/name_m]
[name_m]Simeon[/name_m]
[name_m]Benton[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]

I actually really love [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]… but I’m not a fan of [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] (very exotic sounding and I don’t know how to pronounce it). Out of your other names mentioned I think that [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], and [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] are all great choices. Good luck!

I’m going to give this a try, but I’m not an expert, so take it with a grain of salt

If you feel that [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]/[name_m]Augustine[/name_m] are too much, maybe something along the lines of [name_m]Angus[/name_m] or [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] would work?

Also:
[name_m]Leif[/name_m]
[name_m]Odin[/name_m]
[name_m]Sayer[/name_m]
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]
[name_m]Lucan[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]

I love the above suggestions of [name_u]Rohan[/name_u] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m], too.

I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (but I like [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]), maybe something occupational-ish like:
[name_m]Archer[/name_m]
[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]
[name_u]Walker[/name_u]
[name_m]Wilder[/name_m]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about:

[name_m]Roland[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
[name_m]Theron[/name_m]
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Ferris[/name_m]
[name_u]Galen[/name_u]
[name_m]Oren[/name_m]
[name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
[name_u]Quincy[/name_u]

Best of luck!

I like the suggestion above for [name_u]Rohan[/name_u]! That’s a great one that seems to fit your style. I also really like [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], and I think you would likely be able to get away from the Hobbit reference with it because of the “[name_m]Thor[/name_m]” reference. I know a couple little boys named [name_m]Thor[/name_m]. [name_u]Loren[/name_u] I really like as well, but I’m more familiar with the boy’s version being [name_u]Lorne[/name_u] (pronounced the same)… it’s a tad more masculine as well. Oh and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] is an awesome name!

I don’t care for most “occupation” names, but I really think [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] has a lot going for it. I also love [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. Before deciding on [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], you should at least be aware that the biblical [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], though he was dearly loved by his father [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m], was a treacherous, violent man whose life ended in disgrace. Not exactly the roll model for a son.

Oh, and if you’re looking for a more substantial alternative to [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], you might consider [name_m]Barnabus[/name_m]. HTH

Without question [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] over [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is far more wearable. Also, [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] was not the greatest of Biblical characters (I’m not sure if that matters to you or not).

From your “maybe” names, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] is nice.

I really, really love [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]! I knew a guy in college named [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and everyone called him [name_m]Shep[/name_m]. It was a very handsome and sporty nickname, easy to remember, and different than all the other names of the guys I went to school with, so it definitely stood out to me. So that definitely gets my vote! [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is a cool name, but I think [name_m]Shep[/name_m] is much more wearable.

I really like Shepherd! I also like Augustine from your maybe list.

You seem to like strong names that are different and uncommon but still wearable and not entirely unfamiliar.

A few suggestions:
Ignatius
Cyprian
Maximus
Caspian
Athanatius
Joachim
Amadeus
Florin

What about

[name_m]Luther[/name_m]
[name_u]Keaton[/name_u]
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
[name_m]Leander[/name_m]
Breckan

I really like [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] (you could use [name_u]August[/name_u] as a nn).

I like [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. Absolom…not so much. Suggestions:

[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
[name_m]Abe[/name_m]
[name_m]Judah[/name_m]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]

I’m also due in [name_u]November[/name_u] with my second child - first boy. I tend to like the longer syllable, less common names so I’m on board with a lot of your picks.

[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is my favorite. I love the historical aspect and meaning of the name too. I like [name_m]Shepard[/name_m], but also tend to think of Absolom as the name of a shady character. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] makes me immediately think of St. [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. I’d personally prefer [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], and I think it would potentially flow better with a middle -er name.

Some of my current favorites are [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_u]Auden[/name_u], [name_u]Remington[/name_u], [name_m]Rockwell[/name_m], and Sutherland.

Good luck!

I like [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], nn [name_u]Perry[/name_u]. [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] would be my second choice from your list. For me, [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] feels very feminine.

To start off. I do prefer [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] over [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is one of those names that hasn’t really crossed into the “mainstream” yet and so unless you’re Jewish, I think it might come off across as a “strange” name. I could also see pronunciation or spelling issues.

Galahad - too strong of an association of the Knights of The Round Table. I think [name_m]Percival[/name_m] would be a little bit more usable.

[name_m]Beowulf[/name_m] - same problems as Galahad.

[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] - Have you talked to your BFF and see how she feels if you used this name?

[name_u]August[/name_u] - I was going to suggest [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and then noticed you did mention it later down the list. I think this is gorgeous. [name_f]IMO[/name_f], not too much of a name.

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] - Not really my cup of tea either.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. What is the middle name you’ve chosen?

[name_m]Bertram[/name_m] - Ooooh I think this one sounds handsome.

[name_m]Gavin[/name_m] - This one might actually be sweet to use if its a family name.

[name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] - I find this more usable than Galahad. I dont immediately think of one of the three wise men

[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - If there is a religious angle, I know none. It makes me think of the [name_u]Falcon[/name_u].

[name_m]Thorin[/name_m] - Yes there is the Hobbit angle. But I could also see a lot of “God of Thunder” jokes since [name_m]Thor[/name_m] is such a prominent part in that name.

[name_u]Loren[/name_u] - Its NMS, but I don’t think its a terrible choice.

Suggestions (and sorry for repeats)

  • [name_m]Percival[/name_m] (as mentioned up above)
  • [name_m]Marius[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
  • [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Viggo[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Abner[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Deacon[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Thornton[/name_m] (if you like [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], but want something a little more “established”)
  • [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Colm[/name_m]
  • [name_u]Rafe[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Phineas[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Seymour[/name_m]

I actually love Shepherd! It’s peaceful, yet strong and inherently makes me think of a leader. Hands down favorite.
Second pick from your list would be August then Augustine and I think I like Augustus the least out of the ‘August’ options.

I also really liked the suggestions of:
Leonidas
Thaddeus
Percival
Tiberius

Have Hawthorne or Wolfgang been suggested?

Absalom is too much for me. It sounds weary and old.

Galahad is unique but I guess it’s so unusual that it just doesn’t make me “feel” anything…it just feels unfamiliar.

Balthazar and Peregrine are familiar and definitely more usable than Galahad but they are just not my favorites. I do get the ‘trying too hard to think out of the box’ vibe. Balthazar instantly makes me think of one of the three wise men who came to greet baby Jesus. So I guess that would be a pro for me being Christian.

@vestigesofsummer - Thanks for looking into [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], I had just seen someone post a bit ago about it being “religious” and since I’m not I didn’t want it to be weird. I like the suggestion of [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is a name we considered (I know you said [name_m]Simeon[/name_m], but I hear “simian” as in monkeys so I prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m]). [name_m]Benton[/name_m]/[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] is one we considered briefly too but we know a lot of people named [name_m]Ben[/name_m].

@delilahgeorge - Thanks for the feedback on [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. [name_m]Absalom[/name_m] is very Old Testament so I guess it could be considered exotic.

@ashleyg - I’m no expert either  I tried [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]/[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and SO wouldn’t go for either. He might like [name_m]Angus[/name_m], but I just think of the steak. I actually really like [name_m]Archer[/name_m] but there’s a really raunchy cartoon called [name_m]Archer[/name_m] that he watches, so that’s out. [name_u]Walker[/name_u] is interesting - too [name_m]George[/name_m] W [name_m]Bush[/name_m]? But I like it!

@123names - [name_m]Roland[/name_m] is another of SO’s favorites, that I don’t mind but am not in love with. I do REALLY like [name_m]Theron[/name_m]! [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is a family name for me so that could work as well, and I like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] ([name_m]Leopold[/name_m] seems so grand!). Thank you!

@missasolemnis - Thanks! Unfortunately the family dog is named [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] so that’s why we haven’t gone for [name_u]Rohan[/name_u]/[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]. :frowning: I feel like if we had a [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] we would call him [name_m]Thor[/name_m], but we’ll probably have a skinny, nerdy kid so maybe that’s not a great plan lol.

@titus245mama & @inaname - I wasn’t aware of that, thanks for the info on [name_m]Absalom[/name_m]. We were a “go to church on [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and [name_f]Easter[/name_f]” family and I ended up agnostic so biblical characters aren’t that familiar to me. I just happen to like the Old Testament names a lot!

@meyera4 - Thanks! Originally SO liked only the full name and hated [name_m]Shep[/name_m], and I only liked [name_m]Shep[/name_m] and not the full name, but we’ve both sort of come around. I do think it’s handsome and unique, which is the main criteria for the name!

@squidly - That’s a pretty accurate description I think! Definitely of our combined naming style, SO is actually the one suggesting the more “epic”, [name_m]OTT[/name_m] names whereas I like more down-to-earth boys’ names. Weirdly the only thing that’s not true of is [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] v. [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], the crazy Old Testament name was mine and the earthy occupational name was his, lol. I like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] from your suggestions, and [name_m]Joachim[/name_m] is another family name for me. I’m never sure how to pronounce it though! [name_m]JOE[/name_m]-ah-kim or [name_f]YO[/name_f]-ah-kim or YAH-kim, I’ve heard it all ways! Thanks for your thoughts.

@tmaire - I love [name_m]Luther[/name_m], but SO doesn’t - [name_m]Leander[/name_m] is pretty cool! Our top girls’ name is the name of [name_m]Dante[/name_m]'s (the writer of Inferno) lover so that might be kind of weird, but I like the sound. Thanks!

@riverlyric - Thank you, I think I’m coming around on [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and how “big” it is as a name… of course SO still prefers [name_m]Augustine[/name_m].

@boyandgirl - I really like [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] as a NN, but [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m] needs to grow on me. We’ve thought about [name_u]Everett[/name_u] (SO doesn’t like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]) and he actually didn’t mind [name_m]Abram[/name_m], which I could see with NN [name_m]Abe[/name_m]. Thanks!

@blackeyedsusie - [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]! Swoon! I wish I had the guts to use it. [name_u]Auden[/name_u] is also nice, is it pronounced AW-den or OW-den?

@grnberyl - Thank you, I agree with you about [name_m]Augustine[/name_m]. I would prefer [name_m]Augustin[/name_m]/[name_m]Augusten[/name_m], but SO isn’t into it.

@mrs_anton_yelchin1990 - Thanks for the great feedback, I pretty much agree with you on all of it. I actually suggested [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] and [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], and SO was neutral on them. [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] is horrible with the MN unfortunately. [name_m]Percival[/name_m] would be hilarious because it’s the name my grandfather jokingly suggested for all 4 of his kids, boy or girl… [name_m]Percival[/name_m] [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]. We thought about [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m] as well but can’t get over the [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek association. [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] is great, and reminds me, I really like Zephan as well! But I met one Zephan, pronounced Zuh-[name_f]FAWN[/name_f], and I prefer [name_m]ZEFF[/name_m]-an. Too hard to pronounce? [name_m]Thornton[/name_m] is also cool, a little odd in my accent, but maybe [name_m]Torsten[/name_m]?

@tiannarose - [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] have not been suggested! [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] is pretty awesome, actually, I think SO would go for it. Would it be funny in the future to have two boys, [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] kidding!

[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is fine. It’s not amazing, but it’s a solid nice name. It doesn’t seem to have much in common with the rest of your list. What is it that you like about it?

Calderon
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m]
[name_m]Algernon[/name_m]

edit: took out the ones you already commented on

@kala_way - I personally like the associations/connections to the name more than the name itself (it was suggested by a family member and almost all the women in SO’s and my families knit/crochet or do some kind of textile related craft, yarn comes from sheep… it’s a weird connection but it works for me). Although it is more my “style” than some of the names on the list. Most of the names we’ve seriously considered have been compromises between SO’s over the top naming style and my love of simple, soft boys’ names.

ETA: Wallace and Walker are out, as is Ezekiel :frowning: Wallace and Walker sound too much like last names for SO (I did point out that Shepherd is also a last name) and Ezekiel sounds “hillbilly” to him. But then he proceeded to suggest Jedidiah, so clearly we’re at odds about what constitutes a hillbilly name. No offense to anyone named Jedidiah.
