Still Struggling with a Middle Name!

[name]Hi[/name] Berries!

Hubs and I are still completely stuck on the question of a middle name for [name]Caspian[/name]. It’s the first name we both [name]LOVE[/name] and I really really really want to find a middle name that we are equally enthralled with!

Names we like for a sibset: [name]Zion[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Fable[/name] (although hubs isn’t as in love with this one)

His style is hard to define… Definitely more practical than mine. He hates place names and names that are too “heavy” (because of a namesake that would be really hard to live up to) and usually dislikes word names. His current picks are:
[name]Magnus[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]
[name]Nicholas[/name] (as an oblique reference to [name]Nikolai[/name] Tesla)

My style is definitely more experimental, hippie-esque and fantastical. I like literary, mythical, Biblical, romantic names, word names, names with lots of meaning. I shy away from popular names. Ideas I love, but Hubs has vetoed:
[name]Alaric[/name] (he doesn’t like the Vampire Diaries association)
[name]Rome[/name] (place name)
[name]Atlas[/name] (too “heavy”)
[name]Magi[/name] (also too “heavy”)
[name]Melchior[/name] (not practical)
[name]Morpheus[/name] (not practical)
[name]Noah[/name] (“too many boats”)
[name]Shakespeare[/name] (I knew better than to suggest this one…)
[name]Oberon[/name] (“[name]King[/name] of the Fairies?!? Really, Sessh?”)

[name]Le[/name] sigh…

I’ll give it a shot… [name]How[/name] about:

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Titus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Homer[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Uriah[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Bartholomew[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Eustus
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Felix[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Othello[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Tyrone[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Leonardo[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lysander[/name]

First of all, I adore [name]Caspian[/name]! It’s such a gp of mine!!

and suggestion of [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lysander[/name] is DEVINE. [name]Auberon[/name] spelled like this might blur the association a bit?

[name]How[/name] about…
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Emory[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Amadeus[/name]

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Zander[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lucius[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Asa[/name]

I really like L or E middles with [name]Caspian[/name] for you!

I think that you could have a really cool, unusual name. I like [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Archer[/name], it sounds heroic and strong, but is also not too heavy. Here are some more!:

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Rigby[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Atticus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Felix[/name] ( i think this one sounds a bit lighter)
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Jax[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Gray[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Parker[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Noah[/name]

I’m feeling some variation of [name]Sylvanus[/name]. I like its dreamy woodsiness, especially with a Narnian name. At the same time, it’s a well-established family of names and probably not too whimsical for your husband to get behind.
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Sylvain[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silvano[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Sylvanus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silas[/name]

Or if you want to push the envelope, [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silver[/name]?

Nice names! I love emma’s suggestions! Especially [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silvano[/name] & [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silver[/name].

[name]Caspian[/name] Hermod

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Santiago[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lavrans[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Vetle
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Tristram[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Fenton[/name]

Wow, so many good suggestions!!

spunkiedoodle: I love [name]Titus[/name]! Definitely going to mention that one to Hubby. [name]Malachi[/name] we have talked about as a sideways reference to [name]Malcolm[/name] [name]Reynolds[/name] nn [name]Mal[/name] from Firefly. I’m on the fence about [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Felix[/name], and [name]Lysander[/name], will ask Hubs for his opinion. [name]Bartholomew[/name] may be getting a bit too long, as we have a double-barreled last name. I love the name [name]Othello[/name], but his character and actions in the play are not what I want my son to be modeling his behavior after, you know? [name]Homer[/name] is out because of the Simpsons, [name]Uriah[/name] because of unfortunate associations, and Eustus because I hear “useless.” Thank you for the ideas!

entangler: I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Auberon[/name]. love love love. Perhaps the second time is the charm! Also a HUGE fan of [name]Lucius[/name], which I don’t think I’ve tried on my husband yet. [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lucius[/name] is excellent! I also like [name]Cedric[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Cicero[/name], [name]Sterling[/name], [name]Frost[/name], [name]Yarrow[/name], and [name]Eli[/name]. I like [name]Socrates[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name], but I can tell you now my husband will flat veto both of them. [name]Darwin[/name] I would not use, and [name]Artemis[/name] only on a girl. Thank you for giving me so many different options!

lori: I love [name]Saber[/name] and [name]Thor[/name], and I really like [name]Fox[/name]. I have a suspicion Hubs is going to veto [name]Thor[/name], but seeing as how that’s one of his favorite superheroes, perhaps not! I am not a fan of [name]Rio[/name]…I would be more inclined to just go for [name]River[/name]. [name]Royal[/name] and [name]Noble[/name] are good strong names, but they’re not for me. Thank you for the suggestions!

name-guru: I think all the cool genes in my family went to my brothers  But unusual is definitely what I’m going for! [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Archer[/name] has been tossed back and forth, but neither of us really [name]LOVE[/name] it. I’ll have to try out [name]Atticus[/name] on him when we talk about [name]Felix[/name]! I like [name]Jasper[/name], but they both have that -asp sound. And [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Noah[/name] was my first choice, but my husband thinks it’s too nautical because of the [name]Caspian[/name] Sea. I think [name]Rigby[/name], [name]Jax[/name], and [name]Parker[/name] are more trendy/hipster than we want to go, but I love that name list you suggested! I think those ancient Romanesque sorts of names fit right in with my husband’s preferences!

emmabobemma: I would [name]LOVE[/name] to push the envelope! I’m all about envelope-pushing, and [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silver[/name] is a thing of beauty! I’m almost afraid to mention it to my husband…maybe I’ll start out with [name]Sylvain[/name] or Sylvano to get him thinking in that direction. Genius idea!

ottilie: so nice of you to drop by! [name]Sparrow[/name] is my most favorite of your suggestions. And I hadn’t thought of Magus! Perhaps it is the perfect compromise between [name]Magi[/name] and [name]Magnus[/name]… I will definitely be giving that one a go. I love [name]Melchior[/name], [name]Leopold[/name], and [name]Nemo[/name], but they are all vetoed…[name]Nemo[/name] would have been our choice, I think, if it wasn’t my ex’s name. We both acknowledge that we love the name in all it’s Latiny, [name]Jules[/name] [name]Verne[/name], Nightwish glory, but sadly it will forever be tainted by the association. We cannot use [name]Corentin[/name] or [name]Drake[/name] because our last name starts with a K, or [name]Marlowe[/name] because it was my dog’s name. I will have to try him out on [name]Prospero[/name] and [name]Celadon[/name]!

Thank you all again! I am so excited about the list of possibilities

sleepysessha

Thankyou so much! Is this your first baby? I might be able to find a name that matches any siblings?

[name]Hi[/name] name-guru! No babies yet  Hubs and I are actually still on BC until he graduates from college, but we have been talking about children in earnest lately…I think we might start TTC as soon as he’s out!

We’ve been discussing names for YEARS but the first one he ever said he loved was [name]Caspian[/name], so I’m all excited now and trying to find the perfect middle! Possible future brothers are [name]Zion[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Fable[/name]. I struggle a lot more with girls’ names, so I’m not sure about potential sisters. [name]Hope[/name] that helps!

Oh, whoa, you’re ex was called [name]Nemo[/name]? That’s so cool… not for your naming process though (I love [name]Jules[/name] [name]Vernon[/name]!). I’m glad you liked some of my suggestions (and of course I dropped by, after all the help you’ve given me!) and if you need more, just yell! [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] is super cool, I think!

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Arlo[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Digory (too much [name]Narnia[/name] though?)
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Fergus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Gaius[/name]
Capisan [name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Walter[/name]

So I took the list to my husband and we went over each of the names. He likes:
[name]Titus[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Eli[/name]
[name]Severus[/name] instead of [name]Lucius[/name], because he says if we’re going to use a Slytherin name it needs to be a good one. I am not too keen on [name]Severus[/name] myself.

These are the ones I like. He didn’t veto these, but he isn’t crazy about them either:
[name]Sparrow[/name]
[name]Silver[/name]
Magus
[name]Tempest[/name] instead of [name]Prospero[/name]

Can you guys think of any more suggestions along these lines? I really feel like we’re making progress, because that discussion was the best one we’ve had on the subject of names! I think it’s easier for him to express his opinions when I didn’t necessarily come up with the name myself

ottilie: [name]Nemo[/name] wasn’t his real name, but it was what he was called. Sucks, because I [name]LOVE[/name] the name and the [name]Jules[/name] [name]Verne[/name] connection. I really like [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name], but my husband thinks it’s an awesome name just not for a child. I am ALWAYS open to more suggestions!

peppersprout: I love [name]Arlo[/name] and [name]Hugo[/name], but Hubs does not. I agree that Digory is too much [name]Narnia[/name] [name]Fergus[/name] unfortunately makes me think of fungus. I think [name]Walter[/name] and [name]Gaius[/name] are lovely names, just not for me  Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Okay, I’ll give it another go:

You can’t use [name]Nemo[/name], so…
[name]Caspian[/name] Arronax
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Pierre[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Phileas
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Maury[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Jules[/name] or [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Verne[/name] could be nice too!

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Benedick[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Tybalt[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Edmund[/name] (I know he was super evil, but still…)

[name]Do[/name] you need a Slytherin character? You could do [name]Caspian[/name] Regulus, [name]Sirius[/name]’ brother, he was a good guy in the end.

I like
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Severus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Silver[/name]

From Mr [name]Verne[/name]:
[name]Caspian[/name] Phileas
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Kip[/name] …a strange tale, but I like the sound of this name.

And randomly:
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Zephyr[/name]

Ha! [name]Ottilie[/name]- didn’t see your suggestion of Phileas. Yes it has a nice ring.

I’m just throwing stuff out there!

Some more [name]Verne[/name]-ish names (if I remember correctly):

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Everest[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Emery[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Drake[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Otto[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Athanase

ottilie: Aronnax appeals to me from the literary and marine biology connotations, but I have a feeling Hubs will not like it. Phileas is an excellent idea, but we have a close friend named [name]Phineas[/name], and it might be a little strange to name our child something so similar. I don’t know why I didn’t think of [name]Verne[/name]!! I looked it up and it’s a variation of [name]Vernon[/name], meaning “place of alders” so I could have my nature connection and my literary connection all at once! Definitely bringing that one to Hubby. [name]Love[/name] [name]Tybalt[/name]! I’m actually really connected to the story of [name]Edmund[/name], but having two Narnian names is probably overkill. [name]Drake[/name] has always been a favorite, but I’m not sure how it will work with our last name, which sounds like Keller-Strong. Athanase I could not use because of the Rwandan genocide. Regulus seems a little unwieldy to me, but I hadn’t even thought of [name]Sirius[/name]! There’s the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] reference of course, but also the astronomical connotation. Another one to take to Hubby  Thank you!!!

emmabobemma: [name]Malachi[/name] is growing on me. [name]Severus[/name] is not, lol. I’m still in love with [name]Silver[/name], and Hubby thinks it’s a great name, but not for the “real world.” Maybe I can keep working on him  I hadn’t thought of [name]Cyrus[/name]…[name]Kip[/name] I have always loved as a nickname for [name]Christopher[/name]. [name]Zephyr[/name] has been on my long list forever, but for a girl! I don’t know why, because [name]Zephyrus[/name] was a god, but I’m always surprised to hear it on a boy. I may have to rethink this, because [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Zephyr[/name] is not a bad combo! I’ll ask my husband what he thinks. And just so you know, random is good!!

Thank you both!

oh, yeah there’s an [name]Edmund[/name] in [name]Narnia[/name] too. I was referring to [name]King[/name] Lear…
[name]Silver[/name] is so cool, do you know if your husband has read Tresure Island?

If you just want HP names in general, I think [name]Remus[/name] is a great name and one of the most wonderful characters in the series (along with [name]Sirius[/name] and [name]Severus[/name]). Some other names that popped into my head was [name]Algernon[/name] (from The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name]), [name]Eugene[/name] (Our Mutual [name]Friend[/name]) and [name]Hiro[/name] ([name]Snow[/name] [name]Crash[/name]).

Edited for privacy.

ottilie: I always think of [name]Narnia[/name] first with [name]Edmund[/name], but you’re right, his character in [name]King[/name] Lear is less than desirable  I think [name]Treasure[/name] Island is a point in favor of [name]Silver[/name], because my word names are usually an automatic veto. I like the association of [name]Algernon[/name] but not the meaning, and [name]Eugene[/name] has unfortunate family associations. I like [name]Hiro[/name], but not sure it will be a hit with Hubby. I love [name]Remus[/name] Lupin’s character, and would probably actually go with Lupin over [name]Remus[/name]. It’s not that we’re looking for something specifically [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] as much as it is that I love names with a fantasy and/or literature connection…and when Hubs was presented with [name]Lucius[/name], he vetoed it because of [name]Lucius[/name] Malfoy, and said that if we were going to do a Slytherin name it should be [name]Severus[/name] instead

saracita00: I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Peregrine[/name], and have for a long time. It really is a perfect match between nature and literature associations. I’m almost afraid to ask Hubby about this one because I don’t want him to veto it! [name]Orion[/name] is the same way! [name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Ivo[/name], eye-vo or ee-vo or something else? I’m feeling Isarno, that one’s going on my list to bring to Hubby. I also like [name]Ozias[/name] / [name]Osias[/name], Zephan, and Ayres (although I’m having pronunciation issues with this one as well). I definitely understand where you’re coming from with pairing a more traditional middle name with a fantastical first name. My husband just doesn’t seem to like any traditional names as much as he likes [name]Caspian[/name], and I am usually the farthest from traditional in my taste, so it’s hard to feel like we would both be “settling” on a traditional middle name choice. I will admit to having liked [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Christopher[/name], but our last name starts with a K and when said out loud it’s just so much alliteration. However, I AM open to suggestions from all over the map at this point, even though I do have strong preferences in certain directions. So if you think of a more traditional name that just sounds perfect with [name]Caspian[/name], feel free to suggest it
