Still Struggling with a Middle Name!

Hubs and I are still completely stuck on the question of a middle name for [name]Caspian[/name]. It’s the first name we both [name]LOVE[/name] and I really really really want to find a middle name that we are equally enthralled with!

Names we like for a sibset: [name]Zion[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Fable[/name] (although hubs isn’t as in love with this one)

His style is hard to define… Definitely more practical than mine. He hates place names and names that are too “heavy” (because of a namesake that would be really hard to live up to) and usually dislikes word names. His current picks are:

[name]Tobias[/name]
[name]Nicholas[/name] (as an oblique reference to [name]Nikolai[/name] Tesla)

My style is definitely more experimental, hippie-esque and fantastical. I like literary, mythical, Biblical, romantic names, word names, names with lots of meaning. I shy away from popular names. Ideas I love, but Hubs has vetoed:

I’m feeling some variation of [name]Sylvanus[/name]. I like its dreamy woodsiness, especially with a Narnian name. At the same time, it’s a well-established family of names and probably not too whimsical for your husband to get behind.

We’ve been discussing names for YEARS but the first one he ever said he loved was [name]Caspian[/name], so I’m all excited now and trying to find the perfect middle! Possible future brothers are [name]Zion[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Fable[/name]. I struggle a lot more with girls’ names, so I’m not sure about potential sisters. So I took the list to my husband and we went over each of the names. He likes:

[name]Severus[/name] instead of [name]Lucius[/name], because he says if we’re going to use a Slytherin name it needs to be a good one. I am not too keen on [name]Severus[/name] myself.

These are the ones I like. He didn’t veto these, but he isn’t crazy about them either:

Can you guys think of any more suggestions along these lines? I really feel like we’re making progress, because that discussion was the best one we’ve had on the subject of names! I think it’s easier for him to express his opinions when I didn’t necessarily come up with the name myself :slight_smile:

Phileas is an excellent idea, but we have a close friend named [name]Phineas[/name], and it might be a little strange to name our child something so similar. I don’t know why I didn’t think of [name]Verne[/name]!! I looked it up and it’s a variation of [name]Vernon[/name], meaning “place of alders” so I could have my nature connection and my literary connection all at once! Definitely bringing that one to Hubby. [name]Love[/name] [name]Tybalt[/name]! I’m actually really connected to the story of [name]Edmund[/name], but having two Narnian names is probably overkill. [name]Drake[/name] has always been a favorite, but I’m not sure how it will work with our last name, which sounds like Keller-Strong. Athanase I could not use because of the Rwandan genocide. Regulus seems a little unwieldy to me, but I hadn’t even thought of [name]Sirius[/name]! There’s the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] reference of course, but also the astronomical connotation. If you just want HP names in general, I think [name]Remus[/name] is a great name and one of the most wonderful characters in the series (along with [name]Sirius[/name] and [name]Severus[/name]). Some other names that popped into my head was [name]Algernon[/name] (from The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name]), [name]Eugene[/name] (Our Mutual [name]Friend[/name]) and [name]Hiro[/name] ([name]Snow[/name] [name]Crash[/name]).

I like the association of [name]Algernon[/name] but not the meaning, and [name]Eugene[/name] has unfortunate family associations. I like [name]Hiro[/name], but not sure it will be a hit with Hubby. I love [name]Remus[/name] Lupin’s character, and would probably actually go with Lupin over [name]Remus[/name]. It’s not that we’re looking for something specifically [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] as much as it is that I love names with a fantasy and/or literature connection…and when Hubs was presented with [name]Lucius[/name], he vetoed it because of [name]Lucius[/name] Malfoy, and said that if we were going to do a Slytherin name it should be [name]Severus[/name] instead :slight_smile:

I also like [name]Ozias[/name] / [name]Osias[/name], Zephan, and Ayres (although I’m having pronunciation issues with this one as well). I definitely understand where you’re coming from with pairing a more traditional middle name with a fantastical first name. My husband just doesn’t seem to like any traditional names as much as he likes [name]Caspian[/name], and I am usually the farthest from traditional in my taste, so it’s hard to feel like we would both be “settling” on a traditional middle name choice. I will admit to having liked [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Christopher[/name], but our last name starts with a K and when said out loud it’s just so much alliteration. However, I AM open to suggestions from all over the map at this point, even though I do have strong preferences in certain directions. So if you think of a more traditional name that just sounds perfect with [name]Caspian[/name], feel free to suggest it :slight_smile:
