We’ve got twins on the way in [name]September[/name], and although we won’t find out the sexes until [name]May[/name], I’m not feeling confident about our boy options. My husband is really picky, and of the names he does like, I only like a few. The ones below are our compromises. What do you think? I’d really like something classic, timeless, and sophisticated… I’ve included our girl options as well to give an idea of the feel we’re going for.
[name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Felix[/name]
[name]Hudson[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name] (DH isn’t as keen on this one)
[name]Robert[/name]
[name]Grey[/name] (mn only)
[name]Peter[/name] (mn only - it’s DH’s name and we don’t want a [name]Jr[/name].)
[name]Isaac[/name] (I’m not keen)
Thanks - I really like your suggestions. DH has, unfortunately, previously vetoed all of them because he thinks they’re either too common or too effeminate-sounding. It’s so hard to find common ground with boy names!
Really, really fantastic names for both sexes! The only boy name I don’t care for is [name]Hudson[/name]. I know a lot of people love it, but it just seems fake/surname to me. My favs are [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Grey[/name], and [name]Maxwell[/name].
I think [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] would be a good match. [name]Felix[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]Hudson[/name] [name]Peter[/name]. Maybe nn’s [name]Eli[/name] and [name]Huck[/name]?
Or [name]Maxwell[/name] and [name]Robert[/name] would also be a nice match–[name]Max[/name] and [name]Rob[/name]. [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Robert[/name] [name]Grey[/name]
From your girls list I like [name]Philippa[/name] and [name]Rosalind[/name] as a match! [name]Phillipa[/name] [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Rosalind[/name] [name]Felicity[/name]
B/B - [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] - double Xs, both great names.
G/G - [name]Celia[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] (I know [name]Alice[/name] isn’t on the list, but it’s an anagram of [name]Celia[/name], and it would be perfect. My favorite g/g twinset ever.)
or [name]Celia[/name] and [name]Rosalind[/name] for the As You Like It association, though it might be a bit too cute.
B/G - [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name] - both zesty and cheerful, similar in length. or [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Celia[/name] - because [name]Celia[/name] is just so beautiful and akin to [name]Felix[/name] in a way.
Gotta say that I love [name]Isaac[/name]! I also like [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Maxwell[/name], [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Grey[/name]. I think [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] would be a nice match - perhaps [name]Isaac[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Robert[/name] - that way there is that hard z/x sound in both first names paired with classic but handsome middle names…?
[name]How[/name] about [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Owen[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Richard[/name], [name]Hugh[/name] or [name]Miles[/name]? From your list, I second [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Maxwell[/name] as going really well together. For girls you have very feminine names, have you considered [name]Clara[/name]? [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name] sound nice together.
I love [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Robert[/name], [name]Peter[/name] and [name]Isaac[/name] from your boys’ list, and [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Celia[/name], [name]Philippa[/name], [name]Felicity[/name] and [name]Winter[/name] from the girls’.
You (as a couple) seem to like the slightly less-familiar classics, ie. [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Vivian[/name] as opposed to [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name]. Does that sound like a good ‘label’ for your style?
I can’t say a single critical thing about any of your choices – they’re all accessible, easily pronounced, wearable and age well. Are you looking for pairing suggestions, new ideas or simply critiques on existing choices?
So I have to say this first off - you mentioned that the names you listed are your “compromises”.
If they truly are all compromises please throw them out and start over again. Your childs name should never be a compromise!
That said:
I adore: [name]Maxwell[/name], [name]Felix[/name], [name]Vivian[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], and [name]Philippa[/name],
I like: [name]Robert[/name], [name]Peter[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Celia[/name]
[name]How[/name] do you feel about unusual nicknames? I knew an [name]Isaac[/name] whose nickname was [name]Zac[/name]. You might be able to find an acceptable name that way. Of your choices I like [name]Maxwell[/name] and [name]Felix[/name]. I like [name]Grey[/name]. I like [name]Thomas[/name], but only as a middle name. I like [name]Philippa[/name], and [name]Winter[/name].
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback! As for the names being compromises, I only meant that they’re the only ones we both really like and would be happy giving our children. There are obviously a few that we both individually would probably use if there wasn’t another person’s opinion to consider in the naming process, but that’s part of life and is probably good for weeding out the weirder choices. It’s not like either of us is sighing and throwing up our hands in surrender.
Yellow, I think that’s a great way to describe our style! Less common classics. I’m open to suggestions for other names in this vein, but so far we haven’t come across others we agree on.
Agree with everyone, [name]Vivienne[/name] is the spelling we should use. DH has also relented and said he’s happy to use [name]Felicity[/name] as long as he can call her [name]Flick[/name]. That’s fine by me. SO… [name]How[/name] about the following:
I absolutely [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Celia[/name] [name]Winter[/name] but I have no idea why. I think its gorgeous and sophisticated and it may just go on my favorite names list.
I also like [name]Rosalind[/name] [name]Grey[/name] for the 2nd girl’s name.
As for the boys, I like [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Peter[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] [name]Hudson[/name].
