I think I’ve posted about this about 5 times…and I apologize for that! My due date is approaching. And I’m STILL unsure. My dh seems to be giving me the reigns on the decision.
We have two boys…Joel and Jonah. Eli is my dh and Simon is a name I’ve always admired. Rupert is my maiden name. Last name is common and 2 syllables.
Now what to choose for the third boy coming…
-Simon Rupert followed by last name
-Simon Eli followed by last name
-Rupert Simon followed by last name
-Rupert Eli followed by last name
Or to go with two middle names…
-Simon Eli Rupert followed by last name.
-Simon Rupert Eli followed by last name.
-Rupert Simon Eli followed by last name
-Rupert Eli Simon followed by last name.
My 5 year old has started calling my belly Baby Rupert, which melts my heart because since my sisters and I married our SO’s the name is now gone since we chose to use their last names. We have no brothers to pass on the name, and I feel like it’s my one last chance to use Rupert. My concerns with Rupert include: it’s very uncommon in America where we live. My dh thinks he will be made fun of. Also, does Rupert really flow with Joel and Jonah? Does that matter? If we chose Rupert I’d undoubtedly use Ru as a nn. If we use Simon, it joins in the Hebrew biblical theme with Joel and Jonah.
Please please please give a reason and be brutally honest.
I think that stylistically [name_m]Simon[/name_m] does work better your boys names, but I love the story behind [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote would be for [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]! I think that is very handsome and I love that it incorporates your maiden name. [name_u]Eli[/name_u] with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is a little “I” heavy for me. [name_f]My[/name_f] next vote would be for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u], Ru is an adorable nickname.
Congratulations on your little one, looking forward to seeing what you decide!
I think you should pick whatever feels right. Maybe you will know when he comes. Based off everything you said for you I love [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] or [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is sweet! I prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m] in general, and with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u], but [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] nn Ru does work… I love [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u], though; he’s super handsome!
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote is for [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. I think the middle spot is best for honour names and more likely to be passed on. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is such a great name and goes really well with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u]
I love that the idea of [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] melts your heart! It doesn’t go as well with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] but it sounds like it will make you happiest. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] or [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] get my vote!
Although [name_m]Simon[/name_m] fits better, it’s still distinct enough from [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] that I don’t think you’re surrendering a perfect sibset by not using it. It’s a name you’ve “always admired,” not a name that necessarily makes you swoon.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is an awesome name, and nn Ru is so sweet. Where I live in the US no one would bat an eye at [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], especially if they learn it’s your maiden name. I have a friend who was in that same situation, with only a sister. She gave her son her maiden name, [name_m]Kiefer[/name_m] which, like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], isn’t that common. It’s an amazing link to her family.
I really like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] for you! You are so lucky you have such a usable maiden name! The nickname Ru is perfectly adorable. I don’t think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] would be made fun of. It’s unusual, but doesn’t sound like anything inappropriate or weird that I can think of. I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] fits beautifully with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] isn’t ‘Hebrew/Biblical’, so I don’t feel like that’s a huge thing to stray away from. Also, two isn’t a pattern, three is (generally speaking). I see [name_m]Joel[/name_m], [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] as a modern-vintage sibset.
So my choice would be [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m].
I think both Simon and Rupert are sweet as first names! If i were you, I’d wait to meet him, and then decide which fits him best And on a more personal note, I think your maiden name in the middle spot is a good idea because as someone else already pointed out, there could be a higher chance to pass it on!
My favorite combos for you are:
Simon Rupert Eli (I think Eli sounds best only after Rupert)
Rupert Eli Simon
Simon Rupert
Rupert Eli
Rupert Simon
I would say go with Simon Rupert Eli _! Its so sweet and I would love so see a little baby Simon!
However if Joel & Jonah (my sons name as well!) only have one middle name I would go for Simon Rupert (although I love really like Eli - the story behind Rupert is very sweet!) to stick with the theme on one middle name!
[name_f]My[/name_f] first choice for you would be [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m], with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] as a close second. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about including [name_u]Eli[/name_u] (though I like the name!) since your son will already be getting one name (the last name) in common with his father. Though if you used two middle names for your other sons, or just feel really compelled to include it, [name_u]Eli[/name_u] would be a great second middle.
I love the name [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and it “matches” well with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u]. But I don’t think “matching” (always a bit subjective anyways!) should be the biggest criteria. The arguments for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] in the first name spot are your own sentimental connection to it, the fact that it already seem to feel right when your older son uses it, and also: I think Ru is a great nickname and a way to make it “match” with [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] because to me it recalls another Hebrew-origin name, [name_m]Rueben[/name_m]. While it’s true that a generation ago [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] might stand out in the US, today I think it would fit in (but still sound distinctive, which, as an added bonus, seems to hit the “sweet spot” of baby-naming these days!).
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_u]Eli[/name_u] are both solid, handsome choices, but I like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] nickname Ru.
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is my favourite option for you.
I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is perfect for you. I would use one middle name like his brothers, so [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] or [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u]. I prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] over [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] because [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] is just two family names and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] also has a name of his own.
I don’t think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is a name that will be made fun of. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is quite different from [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] and [name_m]Joel[/name_m] but I don’t think that really matters if you love the name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] second favourite option for you is [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m].
I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] ticks all the boxes, I would go with [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_u]Eli[/name_u] as a one-middle-name option. I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is a perfectly usable name and while it may be stylistically different from [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_u]Jonah[/name_u], it seems to be very important to you. If you want to use it and love the name, go for it! Also, I don’t think he will get bullied even if the name is unusal where you live. Names get more and more diverse in [name_u]America[/name_u] each year and I don’t thin name-related bullying is a bigger issue than any other form of it. Kids can be cruel even to the most traditionally-named peers.
