Story/Character Playlists?

I’m working on a playlist of songs for my characters and I was wondering if any of you do this too.
I like to create a playlist of songs that remind me of or inspire me for my story or characters. For me, it gets the creativity flowing. [name_f]Do[/name_f] any of you do this? If so, how do you find songs for it?

Yes! Not all the time, but if I feel the story has a particular enough aesthetic. Like my coming of age YA has a playlist with a lot of soft pop, songs the character might listen to, and songs about things relevent to her life (friendship, heartbreak, first loves, growing up). I also have a folky americana playlist for two of my stories: one is an American gothic play, the other has a small town southern setting.

Normally I add however many songs I naturally can think of on spotify and listen through whichever ones it suggests. [name_u]Or[/name_u] I’ll go down a youtube rabbit hole from one song I know fits and add whichever good ones I find.

I think this sounds like a great idea but every time I try to do it, I can only think of like 3 songs and that’s not a good playlist. I don’t have the patience to listen through a bunch of others so I’ll end up adding some from my normal playlist, and it just turns into my normal playlist pt. 2 :joy:

I’ve only done this once, when I was writing a character whose main thing was “I hate my tiny hometown” and I created a playlist of angsty folk/americana type songs.

I would like to do it again in the future, I think it’s nice to have, but I rarely find enough songs that fit the vibe I’m going for.

This is my issue! That’s why the lists end up being like 3 songs long.

I think I’m just too picky, lol. The songs need to be perfect! :joy:

If it’s hard to find the right songs, I’ve found that moodboards are easier and also fun :eyes:
