We just canā€™t agree on a name for baby boy.

DH only likes [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. Itā€™s the only name heā€™s suggested the whole time and when I ask him for other suggestions he says ā€œwhat about [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]?ā€

I donā€™t love anything in particular and really struggle with boys names. I havenā€™t suggested anything because I just donā€™t like anything more than anything else.

The problem with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is that he has a cousin called [name_m]Archer[/name_m]. Not an [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and never a nickname. And this wouldnā€™t be a problem if they were different ages and not close but we live together and I just donā€™t see a way of making this work. They will also have the same surname. And I see a problem with this at school age and later life.

DH keeps suggesting [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] would just have a nickname. But I donā€™t like [name_m]Artie[/name_m] As it sounds like Ardie when we say it.

Not really sure what Iā€™m asking, because suggestions based on [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] arenā€™t going to be either of our styles. I just need help. We are running out of time and this is adding stress to a high risk pregnancy.

First off, breathe. Itā€™s okay if you donā€™t have a name for when your baby arrives. You have a few weeks after to find the right name, you donā€™t need to have the name before your baby, the other way is fine too.

Option 1: Use [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. Other nicknames for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]: [name_m]Art[/name_m], Arf, [name_m]Thor[/name_m]. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] also means ā€˜[name_m]Bear[/name_m]ā€™, which would make a really sweet nickname.

Option 2: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] in the middle. What names do you like? Could you use [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] as a middle name? You can include your husbands choice by having it in the middle, but have a more individual name in the first place.

Option 3: Different names. Have you tried both writing down 5 or 10 names, and coming together? [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you donā€™t want to actually use those names, writing down some names you like could cause inspiration. Or you could talk about people/things you would like to honour in the name.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] could go by [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u] or [name_m]Bear[/name_m] or as pp suggests it could also be a middle?

Additionally, I agree with the suggestion of you both writing down ten names that you each like and looking over them - even if you donā€™t 100% love any of them right now, it will encourage your husband to look beyond [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and it might also help you find one you like more than others

Also, thinking about what you want out of the name might inspire you

  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want something popular or more unique?
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want a long name or a short name?
  • A name that sounds strong or one with soft, gentle sounds?
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want to honour anyone in the name?
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want a modern or a classic name?
  • Are there any sounds/endings/letters that donā€™t work with your surname?
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] you want a name with a particular meaning?

Asking some of these questions might help you narrow down what you want the name to be

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know what it is about [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] that your husband likes so much? It might help to know why itā€™s so important to him.

That said, I donā€™t think [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is unusable. It is different from [name_m]Archer[/name_m] and they probably arenā€™t going to live together forever. You could always use a generic nickname like [name_m]Ace[/name_m]. If you donā€™t already have a middle name settled, perhaps you could give him a short middle and use the whole thing at home, like:

He likes [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] because we recently watched [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]. Thatā€™s why I said similar suggestions to [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] wouldnā€™t be either of our styles, because itā€™s a character not the name he likes I feel. But I canā€™t get much more than that out of him.

Thanks for the positivity but I wouldnā€™t name siblings [name_m]Archer[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and thatā€™s just how close theyā€™ll be. I donā€™t see us not being together for a long time, at least til our kids are much, much older. Itā€™s just unusable, and we both know it, just donā€™t have anything elseā€¦

Archers parents arenā€™t too happy with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] either as they think itā€™ll be very confusing.

He doesnā€™t. That style is also all over the place so very hard to pinpoint.

You mentioned having just watched [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]. I like [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] also there are a lot of great names in it! As well as a lot of other really fun shows that have striking characters! It sounds to me that you need some inspiration. Maybe [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] can be a middle name! I totally agree that siblings/ cousins need distinct names. Iā€™ve crossed my families childrenā€™s and similar names off my list and that leaves few options that we agreed we really loved! Letā€™s consider some more noteworthy scifi/fantasy namesā€¦ Take a deep breath and know the perfect name will Appear and little [name_m]Archer[/name_m] will be a big cousin to someone whoā€™s name doesnā€™t even start with an A or end with an R.

I think you need to compromise. Let him have [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] as a middle name, you select the first name. These sort of stalemates create unnecessary stress, and I donā€™t know how much help we could be at this point. I do like the previous suggestion of watching other shows together and hoping he takes a shining to another character. But thatā€™s a big if.

I actually got [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] from doctor who! And our older son is [name_m]Link[/name_m]. A [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] though named for [name_m]Link[/name_m] in legend of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I just didnā€™t mention it because [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] isnā€™t our style, we just wanted something longer and more substantial for [name_m]Link[/name_m]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it now of course. ā€

Being high risk and on bed rest Iā€™ve binged watch most Netflix shows. I donā€™t find attachments to characters like he seems to. He finds characters give names personality where as I donā€™t really find attachment to a name until itā€™s attached to someone if that makes sense.

Iā€™m a big His Dark Materials fan if that helps. Though most seem unusable and [name_m]Will[/name_m] is too popular for me. If this boy was a girl, she would have been [name_f]Lyra[/name_f].

Hmm, well it sounds like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is out, at least as a first name, and heā€™s going to have to deal with that.
I agree with Wandsworth. If you have time, watching as many movies and shows together as possible with strong male characters might get him to latch onto another name. Otherwise, you might just have to come up with a name that is good enough and tell him thatā€™s what youā€™ll use unless he comes up with something he likes better and doesnā€™t cause familial problems. [name_f]May[/name_f] I just say, [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Archer[/name_m] would be very cute for the names of close cousins. Theyā€™d have to get into archery.

I am a lot like your DH in this scenario, because when I really fall in love with a character, that characterā€™s name is suddenly imbued with all their best qualities, and it zooms to the top of my list. What are some of his favorite shows, movies, books, and/or video games? I bet we could find some characters that he already has a connection to with names that appeal to you, like with [name_m]Link[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] within [name_m]Merlin[/name_m], there are some other fun names besides [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]:

I think this is an excellent idea! My husband is the exact same way, when we were trying to come up with names for this little one all he would suggest was the names of his favorite characters on t.v. Shows/games/books. That had no real style or commonality between them. And it was difficult and I felt very limited on my choices, because they were all based on his feeling towards some random character!
We eventually compromised by using the nickname that I really loved with a longer form of the name from one of his characters (and I should point out I donā€™t dislike the name, itā€™s just not what I would have chosen if I were naming this baby by myself, if that makes sense) and I got to choose the middle name.

We both enjoy Vikings, game of thrones, his dark materials (golden compass / northern lights) and outlander. Though names from those shows / books are very tied to it and very obvious.

We do have Scottish heritage so I looked hard into outlander (six books deep) but didnā€™t find true love.

We love doctor who but I donā€™t find many names from that usable. I like Rory but canā€™t use it. Like I mentioned, I like Alfie from doctor who and joked that we could call the baby Stormmagedon but he just kind of slow blinked at me.

Weā€™re in our twenties so I guess major influences like Harry Potter, lord of the rings, the hobbit and Star Wars? Though I didnā€™t want anything with an obvious tie to pop culture.

I thoroughly enjoy YA novels such as hunger games, secret garden, Anne of green gables and narnia but he doesnā€™t.

I canā€™t for the life of me remember the names of his games right now, apart from anything Zelda. Thereā€™s this one with lots of cool space names though. But I feel like Iā€™ve already exhausted that category or they are much better suited to the middle.

I only like blast from the past games like Spyro and banjo-kazooie so not much potential there.

Sounds like you have a good plan, OP. [name_m]Just[/name_m] donā€™t end up giving in and using a name you donā€™t want. You need to be happy with the name, and if itā€™s not decided until after heā€™s born then so be it. Weā€™re all happy to make more suggestions if you like.

[name_m]Luke[/name_m] would have strong ties to the source material, but wouldnā€™t be obviously from pop culture in the slightest (Sounds nice with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] in the middle too). [name_m]Ben[/name_m] is another good one from [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars that hasnā€™t been mentioned if youā€™re a fan of [name_m]Obi[/name_m]-Wan Kenobi. [name_m]Jon[/name_m], if you like [name_m]Jon[/name_m] [name_f]Snow[/name_f], is certainly not one I would automatically associate with GoT, nor [name_m]Brandon[/name_m], [name_u]Bran[/name_u]'s full name. I also think [name_m]Bowen[/name_m] in a nice name, donā€™t know if you guys like Dragonheart.

As much as Iā€™d like to keep suggesting names, this will probably have to be a personal journey for you two. Hopefully you can get some relaxation out of watching some favourites. I really hope you can find something youā€™re both happy with.
