We are struggling to decide on a name for our third child. We have [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] ([name_u]Sam[/name_u]) and [name_f]Anna[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] has been our front runner that we agree on. My husband doesn’t [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it, but he is okay with it. (He has vetoed 90% of my list)
I am suddenly worried that [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] will get trendy/overused. We like a classic, timeless name.
Other names kind of on the list -
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] (I love, husband isn’t sold)
[name_f]Mae[/name_f] (family name)
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (our dog’s name is [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and I know this sounds insane, but we love it and don’t agree on much)
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]/[name_f]Clara[/name_f] - ([name_f]Anna[/name_f]’s middle name is [name_f]Claire[/name_f], so not ideal…but again, if we can’t agree on anything, we both love this)
Middle name will most likely be [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]…or any of the above not used.
Any thoughts/advice are welcome! I am losing sleep over this because I love names and I want to find the perfect one.
As the mother of a [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] I wanted to chime in. In the 5 years since my daughter has been born we’ve encountered little Lucys twice. Though name popularity is super different in different regions, I don’t worry at all about [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] being too popular or trendy. If you are concerned about that you can always use a longer form that can separate her from the other Lucys if she chooses to use it when she gets older. Obviously I’m biased and love [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] but [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] would fit your sibling set well too and I love it with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].
In your shoes I would not use [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. They are already taken. I think the possibility of having a name that might be seen as slightly trendy or dated in a decade is less of an issue than having a name that is kind of a hand me down… your other options are lovely. I especially love [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
Good luck.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is perfect. It’s sort of popular, but I wouldn’t call it trendy. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a classic timeless name that a lot of people in this generation are realizing is due for a comeback.
My thoughts on your other names:
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]-This is a great fn option. It’s far less common than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but in the same category of classic and timeless.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]-This is sweet. Also less common than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but a similar feel.
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]-This is nice, & much less common too. You may have spelling issues.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]-Great name, but would be really weird to have the same name as the dog.
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]/[name_f]Clara[/name_f]-I don’t think [name_f]Clara[/name_f] would be so bad to use as a fn here. [name_f]Claire[/name_f] may be a little odd since you used it already. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is sweet, but I don’t really think it’s any less common than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is so lovely! I think I’ve only met 2 little Lucys in the last 5 years of that helps
In terms of your other names, I like:
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
A few suggestions:
[name_f]Beth[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lara[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] as a combo and for your sibset. Admittedly, I’m biased as I’m a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (spelled differently), my sister is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and my brother is [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]/[name_u]Sam[/name_u]. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] would be my second choice followed by [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] as fn? It’s kind of a short form of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and has the same classic sensibility as [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. A few other possibilities: [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]/[name_f]Liza[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful, and I think it is absolutely perfect with your sibset. A word on [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]: It’s one of the most classic names out there. It has such a long history of usage, and while the popularity of classics waxes and wanes, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is an extremely enduring choice. In fact, at #52, it is just one spot more popular than [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. I definitely wouldn’t recommend using [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], or [name_f]Clara[/name_f]: Those names belong to other members of your family, and it would cause confusion. I do love [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as firsts, though.
Suggestions:
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]: Very classic and evocative, with many of the same sounds as [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] but far lower on the popularity charts.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]: Tailored, timeless, and beautiful.
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]: Super short like [name_f]Mae[/name_f], but without possible spelling troubles. Elegant and feminine with no frills.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]: Another tailored classic. For something longer, [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]?
I must say out of all the names you posted [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a PERFECT name!! A true WINNER and shining star! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you choose this one I also am losing sleep over names so I can so relate!
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a gorgeous, upbeat, happy name! It is too established and classic to ever sound dated and it works wonderfully with the sibling names.
I do think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful, and a timeless classic rather than trendy. It’s also my favourite from your list for your family.
[name_f]Mae[/name_f] is quite trendy at the moment, especially that spelling. I would use the more classic [name_f]May[/name_f] if you use it. I can feel your pain about [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] - they are both gorgeous names that would be brilliant with your family. In the end I could use [name_f]Rose[/name_f] in your situation as long as the dog is just [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is just [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is great too. As good as all these options are I don’t feel any of them are necessarily better than [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. And they’re all classics that are current without being top 20, so I wouldn’t discount any on that basis.
I like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. Would prefer [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
I will suggest [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. I love this name when it is not shortened. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] would be beautiful.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is another classic name that I will suggest though it is not quite my cup of tea.
I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] matches your other names the best, I just don’t love the name — this doesn’t really matter and I know it’s having a moment (three of my close friends have a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]).
I would myself go for:
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (I could do it but you’ll have to have a sense of humour about people saying things like “dog or human?”)
[name_f]Claire[/name_f] (I have a cousin [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and it ages so well…)
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] (so spunky!)
Or what about:
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] ([name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] are two of the greats!)
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Bryony[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronte[/name_f]
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - it’s so elegant - but don’t like the nn’s so would pop in middle spot.
I agree [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful and goes well with [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f].
But I also want to say I know how you feel with baby #3 I am struggling find the perfect name too. I didn’t have this problem with the first two. It’s a combination of her being the last baby and the first girl. I want her name to fit in and stand out at the same time plus hubby has to love it as much as me. It’s impossible. We agreed on something but I’m not in love with it.
I prefer long first names and short middle names but that is just me. Saying that, I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] are both adorable
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]! Sooooo sweet and classic. I think it’s the perfect match with siblings. The baby name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] makes the sibset feel sweet, approachable, cozy and light.
