We are having baby #1 - a girl. We have our middle name: [name]Jean[/name] (after my sweet Grandma [name]Jean[/name]). [name]Just[/name] need to come up with the first. My husband and I are debating between:
Any reason for the spelling of [name]Cicely[/name]? I love [name]Cecily[/name] but [name]Cicely[/name] is looks miss spelt. [name]Cecily[/name], spelt this way, would be my pick. [name]Hazel[/name] is a little dusty imo.
I prefer the original spelling [name]Cecily[/name] over [name]Cicely[/name], which looks made up. [name]Both[/name] are nice names, though I like [name]Cecily[/name] a little better than [name]Hazel[/name]. Which one goes better with your last name?
I think that both [name]Cicely[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] are nice. However, [name]Hazel[/name] is a color, so [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Jean[/name] sounds kind of like you’re describing jeans that are hazel… Therefore, I’d go with [name]Cecily[/name]…
I agree with others that I much prefer [name]Cecily[/name] to [name]Cicely[/name], myself - [name]Cicely[/name] is difficult to say and just looks like a misspelling of [name]Sicily[/name] to me, whereas [name]Cecily[/name] is a unique vintage name with literary importance!
What is your last name? This could help the issue…
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Jean[/name] does have good flow, I suppose, but with a two-syllable surname, it leaves a bit to the imagination. [name]Cicely[/name] (or [name]Cecily[/name]) [name]Jean[/name] is better, flow-wise, but I do think that the rhyming nature of -ly [name]Jean[/name] is a negative aspect of the name. What about [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Jean[/name]?
Thanks for all the help/responses. And it’s interesting to hear about the spelling of [name]Cecily[/name]/[name]Cicely[/name]. I didn’t mention it because … my great grandmother’s name was [name]Cicely[/name] (note odd spelling) but I do agree that I tend to favor more commonly spelled names for ease of use.
That being said … do I go for the spelling of my great-grandma OR update the spelling for this generation? I have been favoring ‘[name]Hazel[/name]’ as I think it is such a sweet name that could be ‘tough’ - but that’s just me. My husband likes [name]Cicely[/name]/[name]Cecily[/name]
Our last name is “[name]Tobin[/name]” … So the choices are:
behindthename.com says that [name]Cicely[/name] is a medieval variant of [name]Cecily[/name]. So I think either name is a valid way to honor great-grandma. Most people will spell [name]Cicely[/name] like [name]Sicily[/name] because of the city, though.
