Styles & Images

I was reading a response earlier about choosing the vibe, or style, you want your children’s names to evoke. It got me thinking: What do my combo’s say? What images do they give? Is it one that I like?

So, I’ve come to you all!

What vibe or style do you think my combos evoke? Is it positive or negative?

[name]Delphie[/name] [name]Georgina[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Lilac[/name] [name]Theodora[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Maude[/name] [name]Eulalie[/name] [name]Daffodil[/name]
[name]Zola[/name] [name]Mehetabel[/name] [name]Iris[/name]

[name]Caspar[/name] [name]Julian[/name] [name]Finch[/name]
[name]Ralph[/name] [name]Emerson[/name] [name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Rufus[/name] [name]Peregrine[/name] [name]Arlo[/name]

Thanks so much!

[name]Patricia[/name], I think your boys’ combos feel more polished and patrician than your girls. I feel like with your girls you’re consciously attempting to inject a bit of whimsy into them via names like [name]Daffodil[/name] and [name]Lark[/name], whereas the boys are more solid and at-ease. There is an obvious vintage feel as well, with a very specific harkening back to the 19th c or so. They definitely all feel eclectic, studious, and a bit Bohemian.

To polish up the girls, I would suggest changing [name]Delphie[/name] to the formal [name]Delphine[/name] ([name]Delphine[/name] + [name]Georgina[/name] can more than balance [name]Lark[/name]). I would move [name]Lilac[/name]-- which despite its delicate imagery is comprised of curt and abrupt sounds-- out of the first spot, and use the quaint and beautiful [name]Theodora[/name] instead. I like [name]Theodora[/name] [name]Lavender[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. [name]Eulalie[/name] can become the more euphonious [name]Eulalia[/name], and I would think about changing [name]Daffodil[/name] unless it has special significance to you. Lastly, [name]Mehitabel[/name] is such a formidable and uncommon name-- I would spell it the standard way, use [name]Iris[/name] first [I like the crisp and more familiar [name]Iris[/name] up front] and perhaps think about something else in place of [name]Zola[/name]. [name]Iris[/name] [name]Mehitabel[/name] [name]Corinne[/name]?

[name]Caspar[/name] [name]Julian[/name] [name]Finch[/name] is great-- I love the imagery and the flow. The name has gravitas without being excessively dowdy. [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Emerson[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] has the RWE problem-- and it really is a heavy and immediate association. [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] [name]Edison[/name]? And [name]Rufus[/name] is great-- might be better as [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Arlo[/name] [name]Peregrine[/name], though.

Very insightful!

Thank you!

Not a fan of some of yours names as they are NMS… but most of them sound great and it matters what you think not everyone elae. [name]Just[/name] remember that your child is going to have the name you give them.

I absolutely adore your names! Your style is what I wish mine could be  I think you’re better at pairing names than I am.

I think all of your names sound frilly, vintage, and a bit frumpy (which I love!) with gobs of whimsical fantasy charm thrown in. I think that’s absolutely perfect. I think your boys aren’t much different from your girl names. Names like [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] sound like fantastic novel characters to me. I could see [name]Lilac[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] being perfect siblings  congrats on your GREAT lists!

Your girls’ names seem quirky, vintage, and whimsical to me. You have a sort of nature theme going on ([name]Lark[/name], [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Daffodil[/name], [name]Iris[/name]) which ties the names together stylistically. [name]Georgina[/name], [name]Theodora[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Maude[/name], and [name]Eulalie[/name] all seem old-fashioned chic. And then [name]Delphie[/name], [name]Zola[/name], and [name]Mehetabel[/name] seem offbeat and unusual.

Your boys’ names also seem old-fashioned and unique. [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name] seem to compliment each other in sound. [name]Ralph[/name] and [name]Emerson[/name] remind me of [name]Ralph[/name] [name]Waldo[/name] [name]Emerson[/name], so maybe a literary connection? [name]Caspar[/name], [name]Ralph[/name], [name]Rufus[/name], and [name]Peregrine[/name] seem like abandoned old-fashioned names just now being brought back to life.

Thank you all so much!

I wasn’t expecting such positive feedback–I know my taste is a bit out there for some people. It means a lot to me that you’ve not sent the whitecoats my way!
