Substitutes for Monty?

My husband and I are roughly a year away from TTC (for financial reasons) so to keep ourselves occupied in the meantime, we discuss baby names.

My FIL is named [name]Monty[/name], and hubby has dropped a hint or twelve that he wouldn’t mind naming a son after his dad. I am really not in love with [name]Monty[/name]. I was trying to find a longer form that I could maybe use and hubby can call our son [name]Monty[/name] for short, but I’m stuck.

I can only come up with [name]Montague[/name] (no thank you) and [name]Montgomery[/name]. I’ve tried thinking of other ways to honor his dad, maybe with initials? Which would be MJ.

Any ideas?

I think [name]Montgomery[/name] could be a cool MN, or I also like MJ. I also sort of like the idea of a more outlandish place name that starts with [name]Mont[/name]-… my dad was always a big [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jefferson[/name] aficionado, so my first thought was Monticello (too much? probably… I still like it, though!), followed by Montpellier. I think all of those would be a lot to live up to, though! I think [name]Montgomery[/name] as a MN or the initials MJ would probably be most usable. Or maybe you could use his birthstone or birth flower for a daughter?

I think [name]Montana[/name] could work? But that is possibly more a girl name, I’m not sure! I went to school with a guy who was called [name]Monty[/name] (short for [name]Mohammed[/name]).

maybe [name]Montego[/name]…???

Is you FIL’s name short for something or is it just [name]Monty[/name]? Maybe you could use a name with the same meaning?

Or use monty in the middle??

[name]Mateo[/name] might work, I don’t know

[name]Monte[/name]
[name]Montez[/name] (I like this one)
[name]Lamont[/name]

Names that a bit of a stretch, but think “[name]Monty[/name]” could work as nickname:

[name]Armand[/name]
[name]Damon[/name]
[name]Desmond[/name]
[name]Eamon[/name]
[name]Edmond[/name] / [name]Edmund[/name]
[name]Monroe[/name]
[name]Leamon[/name]
[name]Osmond[/name]
[name]Philemon[/name]
[name]Raymond[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]

If you really wanted to drive “[name]Monty[/name]” home as a nickname, you might consider a T middle name — something like [name]Damon[/name] [name]Thomas[/name], nickname “[name]Monty[/name]” would be very nice way to name your future son after dad while still providing an independent identity.

backtomyroots- [name]Monty[/name] is his full first name. I’m not opposed to using it in the middle, I just find it difficult to find something to pair it with!

teacherma- I [name]LOVE[/name] the idea of using ‘mon t’ as a way to get the nickname! I never would have come up with that. I really like [name]Damon[/name] and [name]Desmond[/name] (though that could be the LOST fan in me).

I actually know a woman named [name]Monte[/name]. As far as I know, it’s not short for anything. I appreciate the help everyone!

I knew a male [name]Montana[/name] growing up… that could be great! I also second [name]Lamont[/name] and -mon T- (love [name]Solomon[/name]… [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Tate[/name]?)

I think I would go with an ‘M’ first name and maybe a ‘T’ middle. For example, [name]Malcolm[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] = MT = [name]Monty[/name].

Any thoughts on Monterey?

Tough one – [name_m]Monty[/name_m] is cute on its own, but the longer versions are a bit cumbersome.

I really like [name_m]Monty[/name_m] as a full name.
What about [name_m]Jonty[/name_m]? Similar but his own name.

I love [name_m]Monty[/name_m] in short as a first name, I think it’s lovely!

Two longer versions I love:

Beaumont
Vermont

Both up and coming imo. Beau is very now.

Other options could be:

[name_m]Edmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Hammond[/name_m]
[name_m]Montel[/name_m]

But I do agree with a previous poster, longer variations of [name_m]Monty[/name_m] can be cumbersome.

Some names that could lead to the nn [name_m]Monty[/name_m]:
[name_m]Montego[/name_m]
Montano
[name_m]Monte[/name_m]
[name_m]Montell[/name_m]
Thimonthy

Personally I looove the name [name_m]Monty[/name_m] and would totally use it on its own but if it’s not your style I would look further.
