Sudden backlash from fav name?!

The girl name we chose is [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].

Yes, we’re fans of the game, and love it nonetheless! It’s a classical, ‘real’ name and we fell in love.

Suddenly, though, when bringing it up with a few confidante friends, along with some other top names for security ( ) they stopped on [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. The critique they had:

  • It’s ‘too matchy’ to my name. My name is [name_f]Jayda[/name_f]. So, ‘da’ and ‘da’ ending is too much. [name_f]Jayda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. Too cutesy.

  • Too ‘weird’. “Is she a witch?? No? Then don’t, pleeeassse use it!”

Eep!! The other names ([name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]) they loved and didn’t have must criticize for it. We love the name. But we aren’t strong willed people… we are spongy and soft like pudding lol. What do you all think?!

If you love it, use it! I think [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is gorgeous.

Honestly, just don’t tell anyone your choice. Once she’s born they’ll just have to accept what you choose, and I’m sure it would grow on them once there’s a baby with the name. Your other choices are pretty too, but I just love [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].

If you love the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], then you should go for it! Choosing your baby’s name is important, and this is the time for you to dig your heels in and go with your heart, despite what some people may comment. [name_f]Every[/name_f] name has someone who will dislike it; it’s inevitable. Maybe explain to your friends that this name is The One and that you have strong feelings about it and would like some support rather than criticism? Either way, I think your friends will accept your baby’s name once they meet and get to know her. Because then they’ll associate the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] with your daughter, and it’ll be a positive association. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]!

Honestly, I don’t think the similar -da sound is a problem at all. Hearing them together, it would never occur to me to think it’s matchy. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a gorgeous name with tons of history and I think your daughter would be happy to wear it  best of luck!

It’s a shame your friends cannot show more support for the name you love. At the same time I think everyone is bound to have lots of opinions, because they have different taste. I agree with @zpk that it might be best not to share your babyname with other people if your are easily swayed by their opinion.

I think [name_f]Jayda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] are fine in one family, the names have enough differences to be different from one another. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t go with the other names because other people liked them more, choose what you love so you don’t have any regrets later on.

(And yes, we also named our daughter [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], so I have nothing but love for this name. We never had any negative reactions to [name_f]Zelda[/name_f])

Stay with it! Everyone likes different styles and expect to hear their style when you mention a name. I have found it seems they believe that since the baby is not yet here, they think they are still in a time frame to sway your mind.
The names are not matchy and it is a wonderful choice. Be strong for [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]!!

I agree with everyone else. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] go! It’s interesting and beautiful. I would tell your friends you are still thinking about names if they ask again just to get them to back off. The name will probably grow on them once she’s born.

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is lovely and is not too matchy with your name at all.

I say go for it!

Stay with it! [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a gorgeous name and everyone else can name their own children, not yours! Sure, it has the connection to the game, but it also reminds me of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], so it has a certain 1920s glamour to it.

I agree with the previous posters, you should use [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] if you love it! I really like the name too and I would love to meet someone named [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I think it’s unique and interesting, while still being a “classic” and established name. It also starts with a Z which is pretty cool in its own right :).

I don’t think your names are too matchy. I see what your friends are saying but it doesn’t sound weird out loud to me, “[name_f]Jayda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]” is actually a really cute pairing. As for the other critique, it is absolutely NOT a “weird” name. [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t they heard of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m]???

For the record I like [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] too, but [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is the best name on your list by far in my opinion. Go with your heart and don’t let anyone sway you :).

I love [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]! Definitely go for it. It has this exotic, 1920s flapper feel. Not too matchy with your first name at all. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] would be pretty

I really like it!

[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is a fantastic name! If you really love it, go for it! Once the baby has the name, the friends won’t complain nearly as much, but until then they will try and make your choices more like ones that they would make and not your own. I don’t think that [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Jayda[/name_f] are too close (especially not for mom and daughter) because they have completely different feelings to the names.

This is why we are not sharing our baby name until she’s born. We’ve chosen [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and I know some of our conservative relatives will just ruin it for us - (I am spongy, too, lol).

Personally I love [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. It doesn’t make me think of the video game, although I do like and have played the series. Instead it makes me think of [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m], wife of F. [name_m]Scott[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m] - I get an elegant and vintage but fun and quirky vibe. I’d absolutely keep it. It’s what you love - don’t cave because a few people didn’t like it. [name_f]Remember[/name_f], in the end, no matter what you choose you’re not going to please everyone, and the most important people to please in this case are yourselves. On top of that, we are planning to use [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is only one letter off from my own nickname. I thought it might be kind of strange/too close myself, but when I think about it, we already have similar names within my family ([name_f]Alice[/name_f]/[name_f]Alyson[/name_f], both called [name_m]Al[/name_m], [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_m]Joe[/name_m] (nn’s for [name_f]Joanna[/name_f] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]). The similarities have never been a problem or seemed weird to me before.

Very true!! We shared with 2 exclusive friends that don’t live in our city, just hoping to hear what it sounds like from someone elses mouth lol.

Thank you all!!

you have to say your daughter’s name a hundred times a day- name her what you want.

Stick with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. It has loads more personality than [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I also think [name_f]Jayda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a mother daughter pair is pretty fantastic. It’s a beautiful, unique name, but definitely not too out there. I would go for it, and ignore the naysayers.

I think [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is lovely. Being that I have an uncommon name I always get excited when I hear people wanting to give their child something unique. If you love it go for it.

Unless the name is going to cause hardship for the child, I think you should ignore family and friend opinions. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] isn’t going to cause a hardship. Use what you love.
