Recently I fell in love with a name out of the blue: [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f].
This is not at all my normal name taste. At least I don’t think of it as being so. I love traditional classics like [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and clunky old-fashioned names like [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], and [name_f]Doris[/name_f]. I am crazy about many place, word, color, gem, and floral names like [name_f]Lucerne[/name_f], Harvest, [name_f]Azure[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f].
I don’t think of myself as liking the so-called smoosh names, which [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] does seem to be. Wondering what folks think of it. Not sure if I am the only one who feels it is so very pleasant and comforting and old-fashioned. Of course I do think of the jam of that name, which is probably some of its domestic appeal.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious. Also, what middle names could one choose to go with [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f]? Not naming a baby, just wondering.
I think since you like [name_f]Helen[/name_f], liking a name ending in [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] isn’t strange at all.
I think [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] is a fine name - though as you said, it is a ‘smoosh’ name. Perhaps you would prefer [name_f]Marielle[/name_f] /[name_f]Mariel[/name_f] or [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] .
I actually know 2 Maryellens - one is a sweet young lady, and the other is a kind elderly one. So I like the name.
I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and have never heard of this type of jam.
[name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] is lovely! Two of my very favourite names there, and it rolls off the tongue very easily, and doesn’t feel two long-winded or cumbersome in daily speech like many “smoosh” names do. I also think it is versatile enough to work nicely in a sibset with anything from [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] to [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] to [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
I like the suggestion of [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] particularly; I think an equally sweet and simple name would complement [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f] well.
I know what you mean! To me smooshing it together with only one capital makes it look odd and yet when I see it spelled like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] I am just reminded that I am not wild over either name separately.
I am also finding I do like a few smooshed up other names as well: [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].
