Is it possible to make it so anonymous users/guests cannot post name comments on names? You need to be a member of the community to post in the forums, you should also be a member to post comments, even if just for accountability sake! No one should be allowed to use anonymity as an excuse for being rude/vulgar/inappropriate etc etc (Proof is in the pudding on the [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] comments right now…)
This happens when they try and delete their comments, I think. It turns to “guest” which deletes it from their profile, but doesn’t delete the comment itself. [name_m]Just[/name_m] saw the [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] stuff. Pretty hypocritical to say you stand by what you said, but still want to delete it from your profile. Anyway, I might be wrong, but I’ve seen some other comments that had a user name on it, then they turn to “guest”, and the person below comments that they tried to delete it, but it won’t delete. I think so far the comment section has been an epic fail. It’s rare I learn something new or interesting about a name from the comments. Lots of “yucks” and “omg I knew a girl with this name I hated her”. Okay? Thanks for sharing!
I agree, comments section is a total failure. I have just been along to the [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] comments, what a mean spirited troll. Not necessary on this site! It seems like not the usual nameberry crowd in the comments, not sure why it’s so different from the rest of the site.
We all sometimes say things without thinking , I myself being guilty. But to drag it on and on like that? Disgusting. It’s just unnecessary to insult someone’s name, and also to post all those profane comments.
It also wouldn’t hurt if people stopped feeding the trolls…
To be honest, the comments section was probably a bad idea, because it’s clear that they aren’t moderated as strictly as the forums are. It’s a shame really, because you can tell it was, in theory, probably very good, but the lack of moderation and lack of ways to report trolls and rude comments hinder the useful qualities.
Perhaps someone who is on the [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] thread should email [name_f]Pam[/name_f] or [name_f]Linda[/name_f], or PM a moderator and see what can be done with it?
The most you can do is flag the comments and hope someone is paying attention I think?
I agree with those that think the comments section has just been a massive fail, and basically contributes to breeding negativity on this website, very unfortunate, because some of the comments are constructive and helpful! Those are just few and far between. I don’t think anyone would complain if the comments section were to magically disappear one day.
Also agreed with the don’t feed the trolls. If you see a rude comment, don’t feed into it, just flag it and move on.
Yeah the comments section is just bad. I think it honestly brings out the worst in a lot of members/Internet users, even me at times.
I feel really bad because I know what you mean about bringing out the worst. Normally (at least online) I am a pretty moderate and gentle person. The comments section already existed when I signed up. There were already some negative/mean comments, and I became desensitized into thinking it was okay, posting several harsh comments of mine.
I don’t say such things anymore and don’t comment as much, but every so often someone finds something I said months ago and brings it up again. I just look at what I said and got disgusted with myself. I shouldn’t have let my guard down, but the damage has been done. I’ve apologized a couple times and express my sincerest regret.
I always feel guilty for things I didn’t even do, so whenever a thread comes up like this, my heart just drops.
I’m sorry if I made you feel bad, @[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. I was more thinking of the idiots (for lack of a nicer term) who populate that section now. [name_m]Trust[/name_m] me, decent people like you and I who occasionally make mistakes can’t even be compared to them.
OK, I’ll look into this. We’re torn on the Comments section – at its best it helps illuminate a name but agreed, it can breed negativity and inanity. Please don’t ever hesitate to email me or [name_f]Linda[/name_f] on specific issues!
I have noticed names I haven’t noticed before due to comments being posted on them, and sometimes it can be quite interesting! There are just so many pitfalls to the system that people take advantage of unfortunately!
I also think the comments just aren’t helpful. It seems like a good idea, and with the ability to heavily moderate I think it could work but it goes beyond just being negative to being nasty and hurtful. I pretty much avoid the comments and try not to see what new mean things, or less of an issue, completely irrelevant things have been posted.
