I am seriously considering changing my name when I turn sixteen next year. I’m sick of it as it’s very rare and hard to pronounce, but I also find my middle name ([name_f]May[/name_f]) too boring. I’d also prefer to keep the initial “I” as my dad calls me that and I think it would make it less of an adjustment.
I’ve considered [name_f]Io[/name_f] and [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. Any other suggestions?
I really like both [name_f]Io[/name_f] and [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. Considering two of your choices, do you prefer greek/celestial names? [name_f]Maia[/name_f]'s one of the pleiades.
I love both [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Ione[/name_f]. Can you share your current first name?
On the “unsolicited advice” front, I’d suggest making extra extra extra sure you like the name you choose before you choose it, and making sure to ask lots of people what they think, and just generally being careful, because I know that even as a very stable 16-year-old I liked a lot of things then that now I kind of laugh at. That isn’t to say that you won’t love the name you choose in 5 or 10 years, but it’s worth taking into careful consideration. I’m sure any name you choose will be beautiful and will suit you really well
As far as I names go, I like:
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]*
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivanna[/name_f]*
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Indigo[/name_f]
[name_f]Inga[/name_f]** -scandinavian name which means “guarded by Ing” I believe Ing is the goddess of fertility
If you are also considering changing your middle from [name_f]May[/name_f] to another m name, what about:
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]*
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] (my-kah)*
[name_f]Melanie[/name_f]*
[name_f]Maisey[/name_f], a diminutive of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], meaning pearl or treasure
[name_f]McKenna[/name_f]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f]*
*=my favorites
Unless your name is truly horrible and causes problems, I would not consider changing it. Can you share what your name is? [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f] is actually one of my favorite names. Simple, sweet, and elegantly vintage. I agree with pp that it is probably a huge mistake to make this decision as a young teen. Your tastes will probably change and there is something to be said for having a unique name. I am really not in favor of name changes.
Thanks everyone! You guys are all so helpful. [name_f]May[/name_f] has been growing on me. I like Imme and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] because of my initials. [name_f]Inga[/name_f] is sweet.
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] is my first name (we say it eye-an-thee). It being difficult for other people to pronounce has always caused me problems because I’m very socially anxious. I know I won’t grow to like my name, but I’ll still be suitably careful about changing it.
I love Greek Mythological names if they’re quite easily pronounceable, like [name_f]Hebe[/name_f].
What about just calling yourself something different? You can always change your name down the line. Maybe [name_f]Anne[/name_f] since that’s part of the sound of your first name? Or [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]?
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] is beautiful! I know you don’t like it, but it really is gorgeous [name_m]How[/name_m] about some nicknames… I think [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], Imme, [name_f]Thea[/name_f], and [name_f]Anne[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f]/[name_f]Annie[/name_f] could all work, or even [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lilac[/name_f], or [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] since [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] means purple flower…
Second, at 16 it would be hard to choose the right name for yourself. Maybe you should talk to your parents. Or just wait for a couple of years. I mean you’ve lived with that name for almost 16 years, nothing would change in 3-4 four years but you’ll be able to make the right choice and you’ll have enough time to get used to it. Try introducing yourself with another name. See if it fits you. It’s not necessary to go and change your name the next day you choose it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] make sure you make the right choice.
