Suggestions - Hubby & my tastes are worlds apart

Would love some suggestions for our boy due [name_u]March[/name_u] 21.

His first sister, [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] Zaleah, was stillborn [name_u]December[/name_u] 2015. Hubby & I both agreed on her name from a list I had taken to hospital very quickly once she was born but looking back I think hubby was just being supportive and would have let me name her what ever I liked given the circumstances.

When I was pregnant with our 2nd daughter I loved the name [name_u]Willow[/name_u], I called her that throughout the pregnancy but after she was born naming her became a real sore point because I didn’t love his names and he didn’t like mine. It took us 60 days to name her after she was born. He wanted to call her [name_u]Riley[/name_u], a unisex name, but I was concerned that given his family are quite large and all very masculine looking (females included) that we should give our daughter a feminine name - just so there would be no confusion if our daughter ended up with masculine features also. We ended up calling her [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] (because it means night rain and it was raining both the night [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] was born and the night [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] was born) and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (after my husbands Aunty).

I can tell naming our boy is going to be an issue again and it’s not something that I am looking forward to. Hubby thinks the 2nd name is a throw away name and doesn’t count as getting a say. So I have to come up with something that we both like or settle for one of his names and put my efforts into picking a 2nd name for our little boy. In my ideal world the female would name the child… especially after having to go through pregnancy and birth but oh well.

I would love something a little different, love nature names, names that sound gentle or have lovely meanings and I also don’t mind some of the vintage names.

Our last name is [name_u]Day[/name_u].

[name_f]My[/name_f] tamed down list so far: [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_f]Wylde[/name_f], [name_m]Zayne[/name_m] (2nd name), [name_u]Harlow[/name_u], [name_u]Cali[/name_u], [name_u]Sol[/name_u].

[name_f]My[/name_f] husbands only suggestion so far: [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] :anguished: :flushed: and I am guessing [name_u]Riley[/name_u] will be back on the list.

I don’t hate [name_u]Riley[/name_u], I think it is a nice name but it is so common.

So I can’t see any common grounds there with our names so if you have a hunch on a random name/names please throw it into the mix. We need help! Thank you.

First, sending hugs to you for the grief you went through with little [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] Zaleah. That must have been a very hard time for you both, and I am so glad you didn’t have any trouble choosing a name for her.

Other than that our stories are quite similar. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is impossible with names as well  our little girls name was chosen before she was conceived and nothing would change his mind. Thankfully we had a girl because no boys names were ever agreed on!
[name_f]Amaya[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is beautiful and so full of meaning for you. Two things stand out to me, 1: he obviously likes ‘known’ or traditional names as opposed to lesser known names, 2: Maybe if you approach the subject from a meaning point of view, you might get further. I know that when I tell my dh a meaning it usually improves his impression of a name.

Jude seems to be the name that is most ‘traditional’ from your list, meaning praised, or generosity, so might be the name you get the furtherest with. I am going to do some research and come back with some other ideas soon!

Meaning sun, like the opposite of [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]

Abe - if you take the Japanese meaning (as with [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]) means ‘[name_f]Sun[/name_f] festival’
[name_m]Samson[/name_m] - bright as the sun
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m] - bright sun

Meaning rain

Rain /Rainier /Rainer
Tarrant - rain torrent

Meaning Loved
[name_u]Brighton[/name_u] - one who is loved
[name_m]Lowell[/name_m] - dearly loved

Names meaning 3 or third
[name_m]Tertius[/name_m]
[name_m]Manzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Kenzo[/name_m] (ken = wise, zo = 3)

These are just some ideas… I am sure others will have more. All the best :hugs:

Oh thank you so much for going to all that effort
Yeah, I love the idea of bringing any weather element name into the equation. I love the meaning of [name_m]Abe[/name_m]… sun festival, doesn’t that sound joyous!!!
I also think you might be right approaching the subject from a meaning point of view. [name_m]Will[/name_m] work on that
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] is my favourite but it is a no go, he thinks it’s feminine and also thinks it doesn’t go with our last night (doesn’t roll of the tongue).
Thank you again so much.

Suggest [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as a nature name for a boy. I like it paired with [name_u]Sol[/name_u]. You’ll find something you love that’s as perfect as [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

He doesn’t like my list at all. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Jude[/name_u] too.

I find myself often in the same predicament as you! [name_f]My[/name_f] spouse only likes 3 names and will not deviate from those ! I will suggest

Firstly I’m so sorry about the loss of your daughter [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] Zaleah have you thought of potentially using [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as a middle name for your son that would be lovely

Honestly it’s so hard naming and I completely agree we as the women have to go through pregnancy, the birth and the aftermath of it all. Having a baby is not easy for us we should have the final say when it comes to naming! Anyways moving away from that mini rant and onto the names from your tamed down list

I love [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_m]Zayne[/name_m] (would work as a great honour name for your daughter) and [name_u]Sol[/name_u].
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is definitely [name_u]Jude[/name_u] I just think [name_u]Jude[/name_u] sounds so happy and really lovely with [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]. [name_u]Jude[/name_u] & [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] are so happy sounding together. I really like [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Zayne[/name_m] or [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] really handsome choices that would honour [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] Zaleah.

Other suggestions…
[name_m]Judson[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_u]Gabriel[/name_u]
[name_u]Beckett[/name_u]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Boaz[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_u]Peregrine[/name_u]

I also just want to say that I love [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] so I’m sure you’ll find the perfect choice for your son despite having opposite views on names with your partner

Hope this helped

[name_m]Ivo[/name_m] (means “yew,” I like it with [name_f]Amaya[/name_f])

So [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] is longer and more unique and some of your names are shorter or nn names do you think you compromise on a longer name with a short nickname you like? Like [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] nn [name_u]Cali[/name_u]? That’s just where my mind goes! I actually love [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] nn [name_f]Fay[/name_f] for a boy so my taste might align a bit more with your husband’s (though I love [name_u]Eden[/name_u] for a boy too!) but I’ll throw out some ideas.

[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]/Callum nn “[name_u]Cali[/name_u]”
[name_u]Julian[/name_u] nn “[name_u]Jules[/name_u]”
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]/Ariel nn “[name_u]Ari[/name_u]”
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] nn “[name_u]Sol[/name_u]”
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/Alastair nn “[name_m]Alec[/name_m]/Xander/Sasha”
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]/Lucian nn “[name_u]Luca[/name_u]”
Romulus/Roman nn “Romy”

Ha, ha…I have had to tame down my choices a lot to try and suit his more conservative taste because he definitely is not willing to think outside the box…his box contains one name and that is it and there is no room for anything that is too hippy, too foreign, too botanical, too feminine, too unusual etc… Hopefully something else will appeal to him between now and then, just finding that compromise is tricky.
I agree with you about the names ending in ay or d. I love the name [name_u]Jude[/name_u] but saying [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_u]Day[/name_u] without saying a middle name in between didn’t roll off the tongue as much as I really would like it to. Then I have to ask myself, how important is that? How often will someone be referred to by their full name on a daily basis? I over think everything and wondering if this is just another moment of over thinking??
I did have [name_u]Finley[/name_u] on my list, might add it back there and I like [name_u]Eli[/name_u] so maybe [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] could be shortened to [name_u]Eli[/name_u].
Thanks so much for those suggestions  Really appreciated.

I actually really like [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. I don’t think Jude sounds like a girl’s name, but at the same time I see how it can be a bit soft. It’s not very energetic or adventurous! Also, +1 to Jude Day not flowing well. It feels really choppy and you kind of fumble through the back-to-back D’s. If you say it fast enough, or there is background noise, the fullname can be misheard for Ju-day…Judy. Queue teasing. I have a similar issue w my monosyllabic last name, so I’m particularly attuned to this!

I would ask him to take a hard look at [name_u]Riley[/name_u] and try to explain why he likes [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. Specifically wjat about that name. E.g. is it the sound? Length? Association? Was there a character on a show he used to watch that just made an impression? (often, it is this one). Ask him also what kind of names DON’T appeal to him and why. Unearthing the elements that you both (each) love and hate will give you guys criteria. And then you can find a name that satifies your combined criteria!

Names that have the same vowel sound as [name_u]Riley[/name_u]:

  • [name_u]Miles[/name_u]
  • [name_m]Niles[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Mikey[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Giles[/name_m]

Other R names:

  • [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Rocco[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Rudy[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (also unisex, like [name_u]Riley[/name_u])

Other -ey Names:

  • [name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Finley[/name_u]

  • [name_u]Corey[/name_u]
  • Harvey

Similar to Fabian:

  • Caspian
  • Damian
  • Gabriel
  • Gavin

Personally, I like the flow of Hadley Day and most of the last grouping, above. Oh, and Tristan Day! Didn’t list it above, but I’m loving Tristan Day.
