Sunday-Too cruel to even consider?

I’m very far off from having children, but this is just a thought I’ve been having for awhile now.
I dearly would love to call my daughter [name]Sunny[/name], (hopefully she will have my blonde hair…) but it’s too nicknamey to work as a first name. [name]Sunshine[/name] is a definite no.
My dream name was Sunnah, as one of my friends has a sister named Sunnah, but then I discovered it’s the name of a Muslim religious book and not even really a name. I don’t know how they got it, they’re Christians.
Anyways, so I was searching desperately for a new name with [name]Sunny[/name] as a nickname, with nothing really sticking, when I happened upon [name]Sunday[/name]. Now, I wouldn’t consider [name]Tuesday[/name] or [name]Wednesday[/name], two other day-names, but [name]Sunday[/name] strikes me as being kind of sweet. To my surprise, I’ve actually been really loving [name]Sunday[/name].
Now, this future daughter wouldn’t go by [name]Sunday[/name], she’d be called [name]Sunny[/name], but is [name]Sunday[/name] too cruel to even consider as name?

I have a little girl in my class called [name]Sunday[/name]… the name is not my style but I would never consider it cruel. I think it is fine to use.

I love [name]Sunny[/name]. I see no problem just naming her [name]Sunny[/name]. But [name]Sunday[/name] is far from cruel! There’s also [name]Sunniva[/name]. Anything with a -son ending would also work (like [name]Allison[/name], etc.)

I would never use it. There are some who like it, but I think it’s a terrible name. If you like [name]Sunny[/name], why not name her [name]Susannah[/name] or even [name]Suzanne[/name]?

I don’t have a problem with [name]Sunday[/name]. I wouldn’t use it myself, but I don’t mind it.

Also, I went to school with a girl who went by [name]Sunny[/name] and her actual first name was [name]Summer[/name]. I always thought that was a cute connection.

Cruel is a very strong word. [name]Sunday[/name] certainly isn’t cruel. However, I don’t see the point in putting [name]Sunday[/name] on her birth certificate for two reasons: 1) [name]Sunday[/name] isn’t any “namier” than [name]Sunny[/name] and 2) [name]Sunday[/name] and [name]Sunny[/name] are the same length. The nickname is pointless. Honestly, I think you could name her anything and still call her [name]Sunny[/name]. It’s one of those nicknames that doesn’t have to be connected to the given name.

Have you considered [name]Susannah[/name]? I know [name]Susannah[/name] nn [name]Sunny[/name] is a stretch, but [name]Susannah[/name] is cheerful and bright. It’s got the “[name]Su[/name]” and the “nn”…

I don’t think it’s awful, but it’s really no more grounded/serious than [name]Sunny[/name]. It seems to me the point of picking a full name for [name]Sunny[/name] is to give her something to fall back on if she wants to be seen as more professional or get taken more seriously at times…and [name]Sunday[/name] won’t give her that at all. I adore [name]Sunny[/name] as a nickname for [name]Susanna[/name], though. So cute, and [name]Susanna[/name] has a similar happy vibe as [name]Sunny[/name] but is more established as a formal name with a great history.

For me, [name]Susannah[/name] is sort of southern-belle, something I might name her if I lived in Lousiana or [name]Georgia[/name]. But I live in Illinois. Sorry, I know I’m being picky.
And niftylavalamp, that’s exactly what I mean by cruel. I’m worried [name]Sunday[/name] would be a one-way road to teasing during her schoolyears, and then not being taken seriously later on.

[name]Sunny[/name] is too cutesy and [name]Sunday[/name] to me is kind of silly, it’s the day of a week! not a name, but I’m not a huge fan of word names.

But if I had to pick, I’d pick [name]Sunny[/name]. After all there are people with that name, like [name]Sunny[/name] [name]Sweeney[/name] (country music artist) and then there was [name]Sonny[/name] and [name]Cher[/name].

Exactly this. Although [name]Sunday[/name] is a bit of a GP to me.

Then what about [name]Suzanne[/name] or [name]Susan[/name]?

Or you could name her [name]Sonya[/name] or [name]Sondra[/name] nn [name]Sonny[/name] (or even [name]Sunny[/name], really).

I like [name]Sunday[/name], but as you see there are some legitimate concerns with it. I love the suggestions of [name]Susannah[/name] & [name]Summer[/name]! Some other suggestions to get the name [name]Sunny[/name]…

Sundara- technically a male name but I think it would work well on a little girl
[name]Sana[/name]- cute and also means brilliance, radiance, splendour
Sonary- This name has it’s originates from the Thai language. Roughly translated, it means a beautiful girl (according to baby name wizard…)
[name]Sonora[/name]

I don’t think [name]Sunday[/name] is cruel at all. Not compared to some names. It’s actually growing on me since [name]Nicole[/name] and [name]Keith[/name] chose it for their first daughter. I quite like [name]Sunday[/name] with [name]Sunny[/name] for a nickname.

I like [name]Sunday[/name]. It’s not a name I’d use myself, but it’s nice. I have a crush on the name Sunna, a name from Norse mythology.

I like it, and it isn’t cruel but it doesn’t work. I have a test: try the name in situations. [name]Say[/name] the ln is [name]Johnson[/name]. Can you picture a…
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], teacher
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], attorney at law
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], janitor
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], PhD
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], professor of physics
[name]Sunday[/name] [name]Johnson[/name], first woman on [name]Mars[/name]

I can’t see some of these, so the name would just be a GP. I love [name]Summer[/name], but it doesn’t past my test. [name]Sunny[/name] for [name]Susannah[/name] is best, [name]IMO[/name]

Here’s a link for a thread about names [name]Sunny[/name] can be a nn for. I like the idea of [name]Soleil[/name].

I think [name]Sunday[/name] is very wearable, especially on a little blondy =)

I am not a fan of -son names on girls, but they would work.

[name]Adison[/name]
[name]Emerson[/name]
[name]Sonnet[/name]
[name]Sonata[/name]
[name]Sonnia[/name]
[name]Sunniva[/name]

Of all of those, I really like [name]Sunday[/name] the best.

I don’t think it’s too cruel. [name]Nicole[/name] Kidman has a daughter named [name]Sunday[/name]. Perhaps she has made it a little more accessible. The only thing though is people will probably wonder if [name]Sunday[/name] has a special meaning to you? Like was she born a sunday? Are you religious? etc etc.

Another possible idea is to choose a name that means [name]Sun[/name]…and just call her sunny as a nickname.

Some examples of names that mean [name]Sun[/name]…

  • [name]Soleil[/name] (literally means [name]Sun[/name] in French)
  • [name]Kalinda[/name]
  • [name]Marisol[/name]
  • [name]Eliana[/name]
  • [name]Apollonia[/name] (feminine version of [name]Apollo[/name] - The [name]Sun[/name] God)
  • [name]Cyra[/name]

I personally think [name]Sunday[/name] is a really nice way to get to [name]Sunny[/name], and isn’t nearly as outlandish as it would’ve been a few years ago, or even as insane as some of the names we’re hearing now!

I had the same southern vibe from [name]Susanna[/name], until I realized it also has a long history in [name]Britain[/name] as well. [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s daughter was even named [name]Susanna[/name], that really gives it a more intellectual edge for me! I find the spelling [name]Susannah[/name] with an h seems southern still, but [name]Susanna[/name] makes me think of [name]Shakespeare[/name] and [name]Susanna[/name] [name]Clarke[/name], a fantastic modern British author (she wrote [name]Jonathan[/name] Strange and Mr Norrel), I think the historic and literary connection really make the name appealing!

I definitely prefer [name]Susanna[/name] over [name]Susannah[/name], and [name]Marisol[/name] is pretty as well. [name]Sonata[/name] is pretty, too. I actually like [name]Sonnet[/name], too, but that’d be a little more of a stretch, and besides is similar to [name]Sunday[/name] in terms of issues.
