I’ve been digging into my family tree for inspiration and have found that one of my great-grandmother’s maiden names was Tovey (prn. TOE-vee).
What do you think of Tovey as a first name?
Boy? Girl? Or unisex?
What kind of middle names would you pair with the name Tovey (for either sex)?
I’m torn… on one hand, it seems like modern/surname spin on the name [name_u]Toby[/name_u]/[name_u]Tobey[/name_u]. On the other hand, it reminds me of the feminine Scandinavian name [name_f]Tove[/name_f] (though that’s pronounced T(awe)-va I believe).

I like it! Were they Jewish? My first thought was that it might have come from Tuvya or Toviyyah.

@southernmaple - thanks! I’m not sure, but I don’t think they were Jewish. Her parents or grandparents would have emigrated to [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand from the British isles. So it’s more likely to come from Northern Europe.

Edited to add: Similar to your suggestion of Elijah… I also really like Tovey [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m]. My OHs name is Jeremy, so Jeremiah would be a nice way to honour him.

I really like the name Tovey, for me personally it feels more of a girls name, but it could definitely be used as unisex. [name_f]Tove[/name_f] is pronounced T-OO-v-ea(as in bread) in Swedish.
