[name_f]My[/name_f] coworker is having her first baby… a girl. Her surname is [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. When I commented what an easy name to work with she said “not at
all… everything sounds too frilly or porn star-ish… I need help” so of course I knew exactly where to turn! After playing around with it for awhile
I know what she means. It’s hard to not automatically say the first and surname together, almost like it’s a middle name. Reminds me of the old movie [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
I think maybe a more “serious” or sophisticated name might help- [name_f]Rose[/name_f] does make many names seem extra frilly.
[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts:
I think this is great advice - I’d also add “classic” as a name requirement suggestion. I’d also suggest making sure you/your co worker googles every fn-ln combo first. I remember a little while ago someone commented on here that there ln was [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and they really loved [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (The Exorcism of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) was not an option for them because it was too much of a cultural reference - but they did have a son named [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (which is a type of classic cocktail from the 1920’s also there is a famous guitarist by that name and a dozen restaurants). Sort of blew my mind a bit… anyway… I can see how [name_f]Rose[/name_f] could be difficult - as basically most word ln’s can be.
I would probably avoid floral/plant names - because a bit [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] otherwise.
I’d also avoid word names as it can sound more like a description of a [name_f]Rose[/name_f] than a name.
It would be helpful to know what types of names your co-worker likes to give better and more pointed advice. ([name_m]Even[/name_m] if they sound like stripper names with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] - just so we have a feel for what she’s been considering).
Sophisticated/Classic names I like with [name_f]Rose[/name_f]: (if she’s a nn person)
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] ([name_f]Hattie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]).
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] ([name_f]Alexa[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f])
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/a [name_f]Rose[/name_f] ([name_f]Ellie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f])
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
I think she’ll need a classic middle name to make it flow nicely. Some may sound frilly, but that’s better than pornstar-ish.
Some suggestions have middle names, some don’t.
I agree that classic, serious names will be better than trendy or too exotic ones to avoid the so-called “stripper” association.
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
I also agree about choosing a “proper” name, something classic and serious and sophisticated. I would definitely stay away from word names, and first names that are also surnames (e.g. [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u]) so people have less trouble distinguishing which is which- especially since schools would sometimes write [name_f]Rose[/name_f], (first name).
If your coworker has a partner, is hyphenating [name_f]Rose[/name_f] with the partner’s surname, e.g. Firstname [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-[name_m]Smith[/name_m], an option? Depending on the other surname, it may make it more obvious that it’s the surname.
I know a [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] who’s little sisters are [name_f]Erin[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_u]Allison[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
Well, she was stunned by so many responses. I forget that non-berries have a hard time thinking up one or two names, lol. Anyway, she didn’t like my suggestions of [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (yes, I know, genius, thank you) but she DID like some of your suggestions such as:
She said she might not have a middle name at all (gasp) or may choose [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] after her mom or [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] after her husbands mom.
Thanks guys! I’ll keep you posted. She’s due [name_f]July[/name_f] 1st.
Oooo… I assume you suggested that if she was thinking about [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] as a mn a E- name could honor both of her daughters grandmothers. I’d make a list suggesting options but I’m sure you’d have one ready to go - or if she’s interested we can make a list then. Or maybe just [name_f]Helen[/name_f]/[name_f]Helena[/name_f] as [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] are derived from [name_f]Helen[/name_f].
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] would be nice too.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] was my maiden name. I never had any stripper issues or first name/last name issues. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister is [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] without a middle. She’s excited to get married and move [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to the middle spot. Then she, my daughter [name_f]Elena[/name_f] and I will all share a mn
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys… here’s the update I promised you! The name has been chosen! She’s going with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (no middle name). Her mom and her husband’s mom can both be honored and her hubby really loves [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. She also liked the idea of preserving her maiden name when she gets married by moving it to the middle. Thanks to all!!!
Your coworker should avoid surname names like [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] or [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] as people will end of assuming [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is the first name and constantly mix her name up.
I think “strong” names work best with the last name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I like
