My husband and I are having a girl in [name]July[/name] and I had a name all picked out ([name]Emmeline[/name]) for a very long time. After hitting the name boards, I’ve started to rethink it for a couple of reasons… over influx of “line” names, fear of sounding like one of those people trying to avoid the [name]Emily[/name] trend by being “different”. It feels like two trends mushed together.
[name]Even[/name] though I love longer, vintage/classic names - our last name (Sparks) needs something shorter.
Any suggestions that may go well, beautiful, under the radar and aren’t mega trendy?
Sparks is a great last name. It is kind of soft mixed with kind of spunky. I’m going to make a list of names I would pair with Sparks:
[name]Lillian[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name] Sparks - but [name]Lillian[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name] is very popular.
[name]Eleanora[/name] Sparks nn [name]Lena[/name] Sparks
[name]Iona[/name] Sparks
[name]Freya[/name] Sparks, this one is cute!
[name]Daria[/name] Sparks
Paisha Sparks
[name]Millicent[/name] Sparks nn [name]Millie[/name] Sparks
[name]Camilla[/name] Sparks nn [name]Cammie[/name] Sparks or [name]Millie[/name] Sparks
[name]Fiona[/name] Sparks
[name]Georgia[/name] Sparks
[name]Imogen[/name] Sparks nn [name]Immy[/name] Sparks
[name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Eliza[/name] Sparks nn [name]Liza[/name] Sparks or [name]Libby[/name] Sparks
Many of the first names listed above have a soft, glistening aura that goes well with Sparks.
What not to do in my opinion is to pair Sparks with a name that sounds not sparkly like:
[name]Helen[/name] Sparks - [name]Helen[/name] is pretty, but it sounds dull to my ear with Sparks.
So does [name]Margaret[/name] Sparks although [name]Margaret[/name] is one of my faves.
[name]Frances[/name] Sparks - sounds dull.
I love the last name Sparks”lucky you I knew a [name]Lela[/name] Sparks and I always thought she had the coolest name. In addition to [name]Susan[/name]'s always-wonderful suggestions:
[name]Cecilia[/name]”nn [name]Celia[/name] Sparks
[name]Paloma[/name] Sparks
[name]Lucinda[/name] ”nn [name]Lucy[/name] Sparks
[name]Viviana[/name] or [name]Vivian[/name] Sparks
[name]Delilah[/name] Sparks
[name]Talullah[/name] Sparks
[name]Willa[/name] Sparks
[name]Evangeline[/name] Sparks (one of the more unusual -line names)
[name]Anastasia[/name]”nn [name]Tansy[/name] Sparks
[name]Elodie[/name] Sparks
[name]Aurelia[/name] Sparks
[name]Hi[/name]! I love [name]Emmeline[/name], but totally understand your reasons for opting for another name. I think a monosyllablic last name like Sparks was made for a long first name (three or four syllables), so I’m confused about the shorter name issue. (I think Sparks is great last name, by the way!)
After much much much thought we ended up coming back to the original name, diff. spellling. I feel like [name]Emeline[/name] with one M is a little spunkier and not as formal, which is something I am going for. So…
[name]Emmeline[/name] is truly lovely, but I completely get why you wouldn’t use it. She’ll always be one of 5 Emmys in her class. I don’t think whether the name is long or short should matter. Two rules I learned from the authors at this website: 1) If you really love a name, it’s popularity shouldn’t be a deterrent, and 2) [name]Elizabeth[/name] Dole and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Montgomery[/name] both sound equally nice. Last name length shouldn’t matter.
