[name_u]Love[/name_u]? Like? Dislike? Hate?
I tend to find them mainly on boys, though there is the occasional girl.
If you dislike surnames as first names is there a particular reason?

I love surnames as first names. I’m not a big fan of them on girls.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_m]Anderson[/name_m], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Logan[/name_u], [name_m]Lawson[/name_m], [name_u]Walker[/name_u],
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u], and [name_m]York[/name_m]
I’m really not into the surnames-as-firsts trend at all. I’m not sure why I’m not keen on them exactly…at least I can’t explain it in words right now.
For me it all depends on the name… I like the more unusual or less popular ones. So it’s a case-by-case basis.
I like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] for a girl… [name_u]Cary[/name_u] for a boy… [name_m]Baker[/name_m] for a boy… [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] for a boy…
[name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], not so much.
It’s not my style but I do like some of them, especially more for males. I like [name_m]Dawson[/name_m], [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], & [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]. I also like surnames when they’re used as a way to honor someone like the mothers maiden name.
I generally like them for boys, not so much for girls. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites right now are [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u].
I think the practice should only be used when there’s meaning behind it–a mother’s maiden name or important family surname might reasonably be passed down. Random surnames that have nothing to do with the child or his/her history are tacky.
I’m fine with it. [name_m]Montague[/name_m] has become a recent namecrush for me.
As you can clearly see from my daughters names, I love them. I don’t understand why people dismiss a name because it happens to be a surname. I know people with the surnames [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m]…
Me neither. A surname is still a name. What’s the big deal?
I’m not particularly fond of them on girls because they usually sound rather masculine, especially the names that have the “son of” meaning. I also think it’s very trendy just to stick random “son” names on kids and even though I like [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], I prefer ones that have an actual connection to the family.
I think most people like some and don’t like others. When I picked the name Cowen for my son, I meant to spell it Cowan like it was spelled in the Irish name book I found. It didn’t even occur to me that it was a surname ([name_m]Cohen[/name_m]) until later. Like another [name_u]Berry[/name_u] mentioned, many surnames are considered regular names and not surname-names.
That being said, there are some that just aren’t my style ([name_m]Nelson[/name_m], for example) but I certainly don’t dislike the whole category because I don’t love them all.
[name_f]My[/name_f] current favorite surname-name is [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. It has a great sound and a fun, mischief-loving vibe that I find very endearing. I also love Cowen, obviously.
We’re expecting [name_u]Baby[/name_u] #1 and naming him [name_u]Jordan[/name_u], but my husband
and I have already decided that if our second child is another boy,
we’re going to name him [name_u]Chandler[/name_u], which is my maiden name.
I like some of them.
Are the following names surnames or names? I see these names as both? What makes a surname name? This has always confused me.
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_u]Mason[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
I love [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] for boys. I cannot think of any that I like for Girls
