Surprises in my State

Hi All,
I recently went to the Social Security name site and checked the top 100 names in my state and thought it would be interesting to start a thread about surprises in your state, since quite a few stood out to me. Below are names listed in UTAH that made the top 100 in 2010, but are not in the national top 100.

NAME, UTAH RANK/USA RANK
Ellie, 23/104
Paisley, 29/238
Eliza, 32/240
Sadie, 34/118
Brynlee, 36/509
Lydia, 41/111
Kate, 42/209
Ruby, 43/113
Jane, 51/384
Gracie, 53/130
Lilly, 60/107
Megan, 61/131
Brielle, 63/192
Hadley, 67/216
Tessa, 70/221
Isabelle, 75/105
Ashlyn, 77/156
Eden, 78/180
Violet, 80/123
Lyla, 82/134
Presley, 83/274
Reese, 84/136
Aspen, 85/598
Hazel, 88/262
Lola, 93/211
Sienna, 94/210
Maggie, 95/225
Clara, 97/167
Emery, 98/312
Piper, 100/144

I’m not surprised by many of these since a lot of them are variations of other top 100 names, however the few that stood out to me are Paisley, Eliza, Brynlee (not even in nameberry), Kate, Jane, Hadley, Tessa, Eden, Presley, Aspen, Hazel, Sienna, Maggie, Emery.

Thoughts? What names top the charts in your state or area that you might be surprised about??

What a neat idea to look at! Definitely some interesting choices in your state.

I have a friend due in a few weeks with a little [name]Paisley[/name] and another that has a 3 month old [name]Lyla[/name]. Lots of cute names, that are popular, just not top 100 too. My niece I raised is [name]Clara[/name], and my daughter has the nickname of [name]Piper[/name]. Now I just might have to go check my own state.

I’ve looked at all the state lists from 2010 and it’s very interesting how much they vary. Utah, and other western states, and also Vermont and New Hampshire, tend to have names in the top 100 that other states don’t. Spanish names like Camila and Angell are, not surprisingly, found in the top 100 in states with a large Hispanic population. Gianna and Juliana/Julianna are popular in my state (New York).,

Here’s some that are kind of surprising: - I put the national ranking in ( )

Some names vary in popularity a lot:
Carter (48) is #4 in South Dakota and 92 in Texas.

Nothing really surprised me on the girls’ side, but the boys’ side had a few surprises. Rankings 2-6 were all J names - [name]James[/name], [name]John[/name], [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], and [name]Jackson[/name]. I do hear a lot of J names around here. [name]Jeremiah[/name] is at 23, [name]Braxton[/name] is at 48, [name]Bryson[/name] is at 53, [name]Bentley[/name] is at 54, [name]Timothy[/name] is at 73, and [name]Braylon[/name] is at 98. I counted eleven -aden names. [name]Riley[/name] ranks higher for boys in my state than girls. Most popular names are [name]William[/name] and [name]Emma[/name]. And [name]Mary[/name] is at number 13!

I’m in [name]Alabama[/name].

[name]Aspen[/name] seems really popular in the Southwest. None really surprised me in terms of [name]Utah[/name], its very different from the other states, but [name]Utah[/name] has a reputation for being a state full of avant gard baby namers.

Wow, great breakdown ksheja! I feel like this could be a good indication of what names will soon make their way on the national top 100 list (i.e. [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Hadley[/name], [name]Paisley[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Hazel[/name])

Also, the J names are an interesting find…seems like B names are on the rise too.

I can’t wait until the 2011 list comes out. Doesn’t that usually come out next month?

Some things I’ve noticed about MN:

-#1 boy name is [name]Mason[/name] (#12 nationally).

  • [name]Jayden[/name] (the name every loves to hate it seems) is #45 (#4 nationally).
  • [name]Carter[/name] is #10 (#48 nationally).
  • [name]Zoey[/name] is more popular than [name]Zoe[/name] (#51 and #58).
  • [name]Nevaeh[/name] is less popular at #55 vs. #25 nationally.
  • [name]Riley[/name] is less popular but is more popular for a boy than for a girl (#69 for boy, #75 for girl).

I have to say (IMHO) that I’m getting pretty tired of all the [name]Jayden[/name]'s, [name]Zoey[/name]'s, Navaeh’s and [name]Riley[/name]'s out there. I hope to see these all drop on the 2011 list. I understand why they were once appealing, but they are way overused in my book.

2011 names should be coming out next month… will be interesting to see what’s changed.

Wow what great info! Thanks for taking the time to give to everyone. So depressing that [name]Isla[/name] has broken the top 100 in 2 states already.

Also in MN, [name]Asher[/name] is #70, nationally #139. [name]Ruby[/name] is #47, nationally #113.

I was surprised by these names from Nebraska census.
Girls:
8 & 45 - [name]Chloe[/name]/[name]Khloe[/name]
37 - [name]Kinley[/name]- not [name]Kinsley[/name]
41 & 52 - [name]Payton[/name]/[name]Peyton[/name]
48 - [name]Makenna[/name]
67 - [name]Ashlyn[/name]

Boys:
29 - [name]Braydon[/name]
39 - [name]Easton[/name]
55 - [name]Jaxon[/name]
61 - [name]Braxton[/name]
65 - [name]Bentley[/name]
68 - [name]Jaxson[/name]
76 - [name]Angel[/name]
80 - [name]Jose[/name]
83 - [name]Jace[/name]

[name]Jocelyn[/name] was 74 for girls, wich seems crazy but if you knew that they were a wealthy family whom’s name is everywhere it seems a little more normal.

Also 73 was [name]Izabella[/name] with a Z!

Another popular name in the midwest is [name]Hunter[/name], which didn’t surprise me, but annoys me greatly.

Still working through the WV list, but I did see that our most popular non-top 100 is:

[name]Bryson[/name] for boys (34 in WV, 120 national)
[name]Brooklynn[/name] for girls (40 in WV, 142 national)

I don’t know a lot of Brysons, but I did have a [name]Brooklynn[/name] with the extra N in school last semester.
