Surprising Character Names

Does anyone watch the show Lost Girl? [name]Love[/name] it! However, I love it even more now that I know a little more about the names. For instance, the main character is [name]Bo[/name], but her given name is actually Ysabeau. Her mom, [name]Aoife[/name]. I always head [name]Eva[/name], but it’s actually the original Irish form (I’m pretty sure. Correct me if I’m wrong.). I find myself loving [name]Kenzi[/name] more and more when I hear the character’s name. I also remember having the same reaction when Dr. Torres’ name was revealed on [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatome ([name]Calliope[/name] Iphegenia). There’s another character named [name]Evony[/name]. For the guys, there’s [name]Dyson[/name] and [name]Hale[/name], as well as [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] who’s called Trick. Anyone else find out a characters given name and be pleasantly surprised?

Oooo, [name]Fitzpatrick[/name] or even [name]Patrick[/name] nn Trick is awesome. I’ve always HATED the name [name]Patrick[/name] because of the horrible [name]Pat[/name]!

I like [name]Hale[/name] and [name]Calliope[/name] a lot as well.

I grew up with a girl named Keswin who went by [name]Kessie[/name]. I prefer that to [name]Kenzi[/name] mainly because I’m not a fan of [name]McKenzie[/name].

[name]LOVE[/name] lost girl! And yes, never really thought about [name]Kenzi[/name] until I heard it on the show. People always tell me it sounds ultra-girly (people who don’t know the show) but to me it will forever sound BAD ASS! [name]Hale[/name] is pretty sweet too - I like it.

[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Kenzi[/name] is viable as a full name? Or can you think of anything that [name]Kenzi[/name] could be short for that isn’t [name]McKenzie[/name] (yuck!)?

I also love [name]Ksenia[/name] (as in [name]Ksenia[/name] Solo). [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Kenzi[/name] could be short for that?

Lip is a really cool nickname for [name]Philip[/name]/[name]Phillip[/name] as in Lip [name]Gallagher[/name] from Shameless.

You should have heard me screaming in excitement when [name]Bo[/name]'s real name was revealed. [name]Even[/name] my boyfriend got excited and said “hey it’s the name you like!” I remember reading something interesting about the writers of Lost Girl, and their interest in names, but I don’t remember what it was so perhaps I imagined it.

I think [name]Kenzi[/name] works great as a full name. I actually know one. She’s artsy, pretty and maybe a little bit eccentric though a wonderful person. She named her daughter [name]Zipporah[/name] and calls her Zippy which is so cute it makes me happy every single time I hear it.

[name]Just[/name] saw I got some more response here! I absolutely think that [name]Kenzi[/name] is a viable name. I too prefer it to [name]Mackenzie[/name] (or however else you want to spell it). Still love [name]Isabeau[/name] and its rising the ranks of my “I’d use this name” list. [name]Hale[/name] is my favorite of all the guys names. Its another I’d definitely consider using.

There was a younger girl at my dance school named [name]Kenzie[/name], but I don’t know if that was her full name or short for [name]MacKenzie[/name]. She’d be in her late 20s by now.

I’ve never seen Lost Girl, but there is so much to say about how character’s in popular culture influence the names we tend to like/dislike. I think just seeing/hearing characters on television who have unusual names makes society more open and accepting to names off the SSS top 100. Though, pop culture can also act like a double edged sword, in which it can create trends.

The television character I was most excited about this year was [name]Oswin[/name] [name]Oswald[/name] from [name]Doctor[/name] Who. Her name was weird enough to make me hate it at first, ("[name]Oswin[/name], on a girl… ewww, ewww, eww!") though the more I said it, and after watching the character in action, I now consider [name]Oswin[/name] a “guilty pleasure”.

And speaking of [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy, I was also excited about the reveal of McSteamy’s middle name, on the second episode of S9 of [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy. [name]Grey[/name]'s creator [name]Shonda[/name] Rhimes wrote a nice dissertation on the character, post 9x02, in which she revealed his middle name was [name]Everett[/name]. [name]Shonda[/name] Rhimes, in my opinion at least, has nicely named characters and the name nerd inside me waits with batted breath for her to reveal character names. I’d been waiting for her to reveal the name of [name]Derek[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name]‘s fourth (and final!) sister, and again was pleasantly surprised that [name]Derek[/name] [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name] has 4 sisters named, [name]Nancy[/name], [name]Kathleen[/name], [name]Amelia[/name] ([name]Amy[/name]), and [name]Liz[/name] ([name]Lizzie[/name]). Not something overly unique, but believable. Which is important. I will admit that I am too excited to hear the name she comes up with for the spawn of MerDer… though, with a sis named [name]Zola[/name] I’m sure I will be pleased. On a negative note, I wish she would have dug deeper with [name]Sofia[/name] [name]Robbin[/name] [name]Sloan[/name]-Torres’ name, though in respect to [name]Callie[/name]'s character history, with her hating her name… again, it’s believable that [name]Callie[/name] would pick a more common name for her child.

Ok, I think I’m finished geeking out about [name]Grey[/name]’s Anatomy.

PS: Trick as NN to [name]Patrick[/name] makes me happy.
