Surprising Name Popularity

What names are more popular than you’d expect? What names rank more highly in your country’s charts that don’t strike you as particularly common?

Based on the SSA charts, these ones surprise me:

[name_m]Anthony[/name_m] #44
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] #56
[name_m]Waylon[/name_m] #66
[name_m]Axel[/name_m] #77
[name_m]Easton[/name_m] #80

[name_f]Paisley[/name_f] #53
[name_f]Genesis[/name_f] #65
[name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] #69
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] #78
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] #84 (when did this get so popular!)
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] #93

Of course, these might surprise me because I’m not in the USA! Based on the Australian top 10, here are the ones that surprise me:

[name_m]Arlo[/name_m] #24
[name_m]Hunter[/name_m] #27
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] #30
[name_m]Sonny[/name_m] #41 (really!!)
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] #49
[name_m]Leon[/name_m] #62
[name_m]River[/name_m] #64
[name_m]Remy[/name_m] #73
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] #95
[name_m]Koa[/name_m] #96

[name_f]Florence[/name_f] #33
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] #37
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] #58
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] #62
[name_f]Hallie[/name_f] #84
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] #91
[name_f]Heidi[/name_f] #92

[name_m]Adrian[/name_m]! I don’t know that I’ve ever met one, but it’s been hovering in the 50s-60s for about 20 years in the US (currently #64).

I tend to only look at the Australian Top 100 when it comes out and rarely any other time. Looking at it today I’m surprised by:

[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] #23
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] #29
[name_m]Sonny[/name_m] #41
[name_m]Carter[/name_m] #65

I had no idea [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] was trending up. I thought it was still a fresh choice. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] and [name_m]Carter[/name_m] feel like US choices. [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] just took me by surprise because I haven’t heard any and it feels a bit traditional.

[name_f]Mackenzie[/name_f] #57
[name_f]Quinn[/name_f] #74
[name_f]Peyton[/name_f] #89

[name_f]Mackenzie[/name_f] and [name_f]Peyton[/name_f] strike me as going out of style. [name_f]Quinn[/name_f] I haven’t heard any around me.

I’m in the UK, and these ones surprise me:

#5 [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (still yet to meet a young [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (I think) - only an American friend in her 20s!)

#21 [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] (never met a young one)

#26 [name_f]Harper[/name_f] (only encountered one)

#40 [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] (only met one, in her 20s - I know it fits with UK nickname trends, but it still surprises me!)

#66 [name_f]Orla[/name_f] (only met one, late teens - never a little one - I love it, but still surprises me it’s in the top 100)

#71 [name_f]Robyn[/name_f] (surprising because it feels like one that went out of style)

#23 [name_m]Roman[/name_m] (never met one and it doesn’t ‘fit’ with the other popular choices in my head - not sure why)

#62 / #77 [name_m]David[/name_m] / [name_m]Michael[/name_m] (it just surprises me that they’re so popular as I feel like I’ve never met any young people with these names)

#100 [name_m]Myles[/name_m] (it just surprises me that this ranks over Miles)

I agree with you about [name_m]Sonny[/name_m]! That one was so surprising to me. I know a lot of kids (since I have 4 kids myself) but probably not so many babies now, so maybe all the Sonnys are babies and I just haven’t encountered them yet.

The falling names don’t surprise me, as I think they will still stick around in the top 100 until something else rises to take their place. I still know lots of girls named [name_f]Madison[/name_f] and [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f], for example, which feel past their prime to me, but lots of parents still choose them.

I know so many young girls named [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (in Australia). But for some reason it doesn’t feel as over-saturated as something like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] to me!

A few in the US that surprise me…

[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]#46 – yes it’s a very traditional name, but it feels unexpected to me and I can’t believe it’s in the top 50! It’s more popular than for example [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Everly[/name_f], and [name_f]Ruby[/name_f], all of which seem way more common among little kids (both among those I know personally and among influencers online, etc). I would have guessed it was somewhere in like the 200s range.

[name_m]Ian[/name_m]#72 – Since when is [name_m]Ian[/name_m] in the top 100? It feels familiar but not common to me, and I’ve never even heard of a young [name_m]Ian[/name_m]! I only know one or two in their early twenties.

[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]#57 – this one feels quite dated to me a la [name_m]Brandon[/name_m], [name_m]Justin[/name_m], etc! But unlike the other two it’s in the top 100 and rose in the rankings last year instead of falling. I would have expected [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] to be more popular than [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] at this point, but I guess not!

[name_f]Remi[/name_f] (f) – #118 – I can’t believe [name_f]Remi[/name_f] is almost in the top 100!? I’ve never met or heard of a girl [name_f]Remi[/name_f] except I feel like there was a celebrity baby with the name (I do know one male [name_m]Remy[/name_m] in his twenties) and I have no idea how or why it got so popular. I would have expected it to rank way down in the 800s or something.

In the US

Naomi #46 (4,463 babies) – This is lovely, but doesn’t seem on-trend to me right now.
Natalie #55 – I guess I’ve never met a baby Natalie? It feels more like the name of a 30 year old.
Genesis #65 (3,427 babies) – I’ve only ever met one. Seems very unusual for the top 100
Kennedy #74 (3,060 babies) – I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by this one… but I am?
Nevaeh #95 (2,778 babies) – I can’t believe there are actually that many people naming their daughters Nevaeh.
Raelynn #100 (2,702 babies) – For a name that could probably be spelled a lot of different ways, I’m surprised that one managed to crack the top 100.

Theodore #10 (10,754 babies) – I feel like this is a name that is only popular on nameberry, but apparently not!
Sebastian #13 (9,341 babies) – Same reasoning for this one as Theodore.
Michael #16 (8,829 babies) – Babies named Michael? I feel like all the Michaels I’ve met are my parents’ age.
Isaiah #58 – (5,360) Seems like a more obscure biblical name to me, but I guess a lot of people have been using it!
Aaron #71 – (4,496 babies) Seems dated to me, like Michael.
Walker #78 (4,232 babies) – This is just an odd choice imo.

Edited to add number of babies!

Yes, what is it with [name_f]Genesis[/name_f]? [name_m]Can[/name_m] anyone explain why it’s so popular?

I was shocked to learn that [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] is in the top 100 in my home state of Arkansas. :face_with_peeking_eye::sob:

I have read that [name_f]Genesis[/name_f] is most popular among Hispanic/Latino Americans. Girls’ names ending with -is or -ice/-isse etc are popular in general among Latinos, and [name_f]Genesis[/name_f] also has a religious significance which probably adds to its popularity.

Oh, that makes sense! Thank you for the explanation.
