My SO has been instant that our first daughter have the middle name [name]Summer[/name] to honor someone who was important to us. However I’m not sure if I like [name]Summer[/name] or [name]Suvi[/name] better. [name]Suvi[name] is Finnish for [name]Summer[/name] and not speaking Finnish I assume the pronunciation is [name]SUE[/name]-vee. I like it for because its a little twist on an “older” name but I’m worried it sounds a too nickname-y.
Opinions?
Either name would be middle name material only.
As a Finnish American I love [name]Suvi[/name], I think you have the prn right but it depends on what you mean by “vi”, it is pronounced [name]SUE[/name]-vee.
It’s nice but even I pause at using some Finnish names because they are so strange next to my Anglo surname, if you don’t have a Finnish surname you might do well to give her something more flexible. [name]Summer[/name] [name]Viola[/name] or something nn [name]Suvi[/name] could be pretty and logical.
That’s exactly the pronunciation I was going for! I just stink at typing out how things sound. My SO has a common Anglo surname and there’s a few names that sound really odd next to it, like [name]Dante[/name] which he loves. But it sounds out of place, which makes me sad because it sounds great with his mom’s Italian maiden name.
Right now either would be a middle name for [name]Lilith[/name] so it would be [name]Lilith[/name] [name]Summer[/name] or [name]Lilith[/name] [name]Suvi[/name]. Another option would be it paired with [name]Kristen[/name] but [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Summer[/name] sounds dated to me.
Ahhhhhhh!
I love either [name]Lilith[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] or [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Suvi[/name]! [name]Lovely[/name] : D. Yes when I think of venturing into full on Finnish names, it is usually in the middle spot. [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Summer[/name] is pretty but dated but [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] is much fresher.
There are a few Finnish names though that are a bit more adaptable…and I wonder if [name]Suvi[/name] is one of them? It is close to [name]Suri[/name], which simultaneously might be a bad thing (if you would be annoyed by the association) and a good thing (it makes the name seem less ‘foreign’).
PS loving [name]Lilith[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] nn [name]Lili[/name] [name]Su/name…of course if you don’t like it don’t use it : D.
Good luck!
[name]Summer[/name].
If you aren’t Finnish, I think using such a distinctly Finnish name such as [name]Suvi[/name] is pretentious. It’s also very nicknamey.
i think you can use [name]Suvi[/name] regardless of finnish heritage. Names arent ‘owned’ by certain cultures or countries they are free for all and living in a world that is becoming increasingly more aware of other languages and cultures i think it is even more acceptable today than it ever has been! i know a very blonde english girl called Haromi (traditional japanese name) with no japanese heritage though she was conceived there but she suits the name beautiful it doesnt belong to japan. it is refreshing to see people embracing other cultures
I think [name]Suvi[/name] is so simple and sleek and an excellent alternative to [name]Summer[/name] (which feels a bit dated to me.) Somehow [name]Winter[/name] is very modern, but [name]Autumn[/name] and [name]Summer[/name] are feeling kind of 80’s to me.
[name]Kristen[/name] is classic, and Nordic to boot. I prefer it spelled [name]Kristin[/name]- more symmetrical. [name]Kristin[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] is great. Have you ever read [name]Kristin[/name] Lavransdattar? It will make you love the name even more.
[name]Lilith[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] - I think [name]Lilith[/name] is such a powerful name for a girl, with its mythological connection. With [name]Suvi[/name], the flow is trickier than [name]Kristin[/name], because the TH and the S run into each other. But that’s just me being picky.
[name]Both[/name] are lovely.
Thanks for the opinions!
Heritage is one of those things that if a name is part of its great but its not mandatory that it has to be related to because that would get some very interesting combos. And children me and my SO would have would be [name]German[/name], Italian and Irish and like a mentioned earlir. Most names that have more give to where they’re from sound odd.
I think I like [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Suvi[/name] sound-wise a tad more but when we have children we’ll probably end up with [name]Lilith[/name]. I think [name]Lili[/name]-[name]Sue[/name] is adorable. His cousin is [name]Lily[/name] and I know that his mom shortens just about every name she know but I want to avoid [name]Lily[/name]. Plus one of SO’s sisters goes by [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Lu[/name] sometimes.
I vote [name]Summer[/name].
[name]Suvi[/name] for me, lovely and different from the common [name]Summer[/name]. [name]Suri[/name] is being used now that the Cruises made it common, so [name]Suvi[/name] won’t be difficult for people to figure out, especially as it’s in the middle spot.
I live in Finland, so like some Finnish names. [name]Suvi[/name] is great.
^ This. I prefer [name]Suvi[/name] to [name]Summer[/name].
I was not aware that [name]Suvi[/name] was Finnish for [name]Summer[/name]. While, I do love the name [name]Suvi[/name], for me , from what i gather ,if it is a name honoring someone, I would go with [name]Summer[/name]. I get asked quite often if I’m Jewish b/c of my name and I am not .
I also think (as a Finnish heritage person) that the names are available to all - especially a relatively accessible one like [name]Suvi[/name] (now, Kyllikki or [name]Orvokki[/name]…I might raise an eyebrow, not that it seems pretentious or insensitive but just that it’s a hard name for anybody, let alone someone without a heritage connection).
I think with it being in the middle spot and most people not being familiar with Finnish, no one’s going to assume anything about this little girl. There might be questions like “what kind of a name is that?” “what culture is that name from?” etc.
Jesba: I agree on the hard to wear point. [name]How[/name] would you even pronounce those other names?
I’m sure you’ve considered Samhradh, Estate/Estivo and [name]Sommer[/name] as alternatives to [name]Summer[/name] as well (Gaelic, Italian and [name]German[/name] respectively) considering your and your SO heritage.
[name]Sommer[/name] is so close to [name]Summer[/name] it could be a really easy was to spruce up a slightly outdated combo like [name]Kirsten[/name] [name]Summer[/name] to [name]Kirsten[/name] [name]Sommer[/name].
Kyllikki is a little like COOL eek kee (the y is a front rounded vowel which we don’t have in English, sort of like “eu” in French or ue in [name]German[/name]).
[name]Orvokki[/name] is easier, OR vohk kee (with a trilled R).
: D.
Lexiem: I actually hadn’t thought about using Samhradh, I like Irish names, but I worry about how eay it wo uld be for someone else to proniuncethen. Estivo is nice but the ‘o’ screams masculine to me (too many years of Spanish class).
Jesba: They sound nice but pronouncing them would be tricky.
: D I wasn’t really suggesting them, sorry if that was unclear. Those were contrasted as inaccessible Finnish names whereas [name]Suvi[/name] is pretty accessible.
I know. I just meant that thy do sound really cool but I totally see why they’re inaccessible. It would be like using an Icelandic name in [name]Brazil[/name]. It would be hard
[name]Ah[/name], I see - gotchya! Yes, it’s a shame that’s how it is when there are so cool many coo inaccessible names, but in a way it makes things easier since there are so many good names out there! Have to narrow down somehow!
