We are expecting our third baby in February 2014. If it’s a boy we’ll call him [name_m]Walter[/name_m], a name we are head over heels in love with, but my husband and I can’t find any girl names we agree on.
Any suggestions along these lines? We like names that are classic but not overly common. My husband doesn’t have a clear name “style” for girls, but I would consider mine to be vintage and sweet, with the air of a heroine from an old storybook rather than an old lady. Think of intelligent little girls from an E. [name_m]Nesbit[/name_m] novel, or something that sounds dainty and Victorian but would fit very nicely into a steampunk book too.
Names I like but have been mostly vetoed by hubby:
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
Names my husband likes but are mostly vetoed by me:
[name_f]Alina[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elinor[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f] (our original pick - I eventually decided it wasn’t right even though I really like it)
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
He says we need to use a name starting with a hard consonant to match the snappy C’s of our first two kids’ names, but I’m not sure that’s going to ever happen based on the ones he’s suggested so far! We cannot do C, K, or J names, and are hoping to use the middle name [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. Our last name is two syllables, starting with J. So:
[name_f]Love[/name_f] your kids names! [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]? It is a bit more modern than [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. Here are some I love that would work:
So funny! I have a [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], one vintage name plus [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. I find it the best name to go with [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], of course, but you already have a [name_f]Corinna[/name_f]. I love yours’ style, cool mix of vintage and quirkiness.
Other ideas:
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was the first name that came to mind that you didn’t already have on your list, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] J.

[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] J.
[name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] J.
[name_f]Tamara[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] J.
[name_f]Malvina[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] J.
My first thought was [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]/[name_f]Jessamyn[/name_f], but no J names? [name_u]Boo[/name_u]!
I also thought that [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] would be nice, but you don’t want another C name. Maybe you would consider [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]? It’s not a hard C.
I love the steampunk/old storybook vintage names too.
So, my suggestions are:
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f]
[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Verena[/name_f]/[name_f]Verina[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Iva[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Leora[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a tough middle to work with.
Good luck!
Wow, thank you for all these fabulous suggestions, everyone! As far as C names go, we really can’t do another C since we don’t intend to name ALL our kids with C names and we don’t want to set up a pattern. I felt like [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_f]Cora[/name_f] were different enough, [name_m]Charles[/name_m] not being a hard C, but we can’t go with any hard C/K sounds or the letter itself. And as for J, we’d rather not have an alliterative name. Which is sad because I love so many J names!
My favorites from your suggestions:
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - although, isn’t [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] a witch in the book and movie by that name? With a middle name of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], even though I’m not choosing the name because of the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character, I really don’t want a well-known witch for the first name too! I actually love the nickname [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] more than the name itself, so I might go for simply [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], but the only major association with that name is [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] Swinton, who plays the White Witch in the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] movies. Groan! Can’t get away from the witches! Maybe [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] doesn’t create a witch association for most people and it would be okay. It starts with a hard consonant, and has a fluid sound to it - both things my hubby has said he likes. I’ll suggest that one.
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] - This was vetoed by my husband during our first pregnancy…but it might be worth bringing up again!
[name_f]Lilian[/name_f] - Not exactly my style, and seems like it could get popular fast, but it sounds like one my husband would like and maybe it would grow on me? [name_m]Worth[/name_m] musing over.
I agree, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a hard MN to work with. I am open to suggestions for an alternative for the middle name, too. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] just hits that perfect sweet spot of feminine, strong, old sounding, AND literary…I just love it.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s not really a “witch.” She’s an incredible intelligent six-year-old girl who develops telekinetic powers. At the end of the book she’s put at a higher grade level and she looses the ability to be telekinetic because she’s using her brainpower in school… I don’t think i’m explaining it great, but it’s a great book and the movie adaption’s good too, so you should check it out.
Keeping in mind you both liked [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] a lot…and it ticks a lot of boxes…
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Margeret[/name_f]
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
I agree, [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is gorgeous! [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is a favorite of mine. It’s too bad it’s alliterative with our last name!
I also love sweet vintage /story book names! I also love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] but it’s so very popular so that’s kept it in my mn list.
Wdyt of:
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Lisette[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] (may fav!)
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_f]Corinna[/name_f] and …
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] ([name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]/[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] (looove this; too matchy with last name though?)
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
Best of luck! I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] in the mn spot - it’s on my list too
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was the first name that sprung to mind for me too when I read your post! I love it…Though as the mother of a little [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] I’m a little biased! [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is not a witch in the book/movie… She’s a gifted child! Watch the movie I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] flows amazingly well and is gorgeous… Definately sweet and storybook vintage!
Is there any possibility of using [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as the first name? Then you could have a C middle name; e.g.
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Celia[/name_f]
I just love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]!
From what I have gathered from the many wonderfu suggestions:
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] &
[name_f]Leona[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] are beautiful, sweet and strong all at once.
Best wishes to you! ~[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
