Husband has mentioned these two names for the hundredth time and I thought I would run it by you berries. I personally lean more towards [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], but also can’t shake the cuteness of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. What do you guys think? [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] are strong contenders for us.
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is adorable and chic and I really like it!
I’m not a huge [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] fan, but I like [name_f]Sybella[/name_f]/[name_f]Sibella[/name_f]
I like both names! Agreed, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is really cute. [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is interesting and rare (the girl from Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] pulled it off
I love [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]! Not a big fan of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. I don’t hate it or anything, it’s just one of those names that everyone else (at least here on NB) seems to love, but I just don’t see the appeal of personally.
I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] (and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]). I don’t like [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] as much, it has some really great historical associations.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Sybil[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (and cute nickname Sybbie and frilly versions [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybella[/name_f]), less into [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]—it sounds like “sickly” to me. I personally like the full [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] better (especially with the I spelling.)
I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! I don’t care much for [name_f]Sybil[/name_f].
I prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]!
I prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], w/the i spelling ([name_f]Silvie[/name_f]). For me, [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] still brings to mind immediately the person who claimed to have 16 different personalities. However, my guess is that most people who are naming babies now won’t think of that association, & [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] does have some cool forebears (e.g., [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] Ludington). If I were going to use a form of [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], I’d probably choose [name_f]Sibella[/name_f], but that’s just me. Good luck!
I prefer [name_f]Sybil[/name_f].
I absolutely love [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! They both happen to have really good associations for me, that give a strong, feisty, determined feel that’s just wonderful. They could sound like the names of heroines in a novel with the right middle, without being too over the top. I also prefer [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (in my top 10) as it’s far less popular where I live, but still such a wonderful vintage name! And I’m not a big nicknamer but Sybbie is so cute! I’d say both fit well with your other children’s names, but [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] especially.
Both names are on my favourites list! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] has always been my favourite though, it’s so sweet and I think I love it just a bit more than [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f].
I might suggest [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] as the full name and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] as a nickname. That being said, I could see my family reverting to Sybie/Sybbie as an endearing nickname around the house. If by age 3-4-5 one name seems used more than others then you have the one that “fits” her best but gives her the option of a lovely full name on a resume in 25 years.
My problem with [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is the -bl- sound which ruins it for me. I prefer [name_f]Sibel[/name_f] which has a clearer -bell sound, or just [name_f]Sabine[/name_f] / [name_f]Sabina[/name_f].
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is a favourite, and the one I would choose of the two.
If you asked about [name_f]Sibel[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], I would be more at a loss, but [name_f]Sibel[/name_f] doesn’t really fit with you sibset… [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] does though.
I also love the nature connection with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], I know that’s important to you. [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] has more of a mystical vibe.
I also like [name_f]Silvana[/name_f] and [name_f]Severine[/name_f].
Thank you all for the awesome feedback. Thank God for Nameberry! I still haven’t been able to make up my mind, but I have written down your suggestions of [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] or [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]… Super pretty and elegant, like a 40’s movie star.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is nice, but I lean towards [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] (and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]).
I like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] better than [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. To me, [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] sounds like someone saying “civil” with a lisp.
This is really tough and I truly like them both. I think of [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] from Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] and how chic the name was on her. I do think [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] will be more likable by the vast majority since it has a cute factor but is also very ladylike.
So far I think just for practicality’s sake I’m leaning towards [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], it’s a name that sounds good with just about anything, whereas it’s been a pain to find any attractive nature names that go with [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]… Also, “Civil” with a lisp… now I can’t get that out of my mind.
