Sybil, Helen, Helena, Sylvia?

I think these are my top contenders for [name]Phoebe[/name]'s sister. Here are the pros and cons

[name]Sybil[/name]: Greek, with a long history like [name]Phoebe[/name]. Very unusual but classic. [name]Will[/name] be alliterative with my ln, which I love. DH really likes. But I do get a lot of negative feedback, not that it really matters much.

[name]Helen[/name]: Most classic and clean. Family name. But I just met a baby [name]Helen[/name], and I think it’s inevitably going to come back in a big way. It’s also sort of a safe choice, not terribly exciting.

[name]Helena[/name]: Makes [name]Helen[/name] more exciting. Shakespearean like [name]Phoebe[/name]. But will this sound a little trendy when all the frilly ‘ends in a’ names start taking over the world?

[name]Sylvia[/name]: Again, classic but unusual (for now). Alliteration. But we would call her [name]Sylvie[/name] and I feel like [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] is a little cutesy with the same ending.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

[name]Sybil[/name] - I think this is a really interesting choice, and I love that it’s so Greek. I like [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sybil[/name] together, but I like [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] more.

[name]Helen[/name] - I agree, it is classic, but a little bit boring to me, as well. Some celeb just named their daughter [name]Helen[/name] [name]Grace[/name], I think, so I agree that it’ll probably start coming back into style soon. So many other [name]Helen[/name] forms are quite fashionable right now ([name]Elena[/name], [name]Elaina[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Ella[/name], etc.). If you’re a nn person, I think the nn [name]Leni[/name] is adorable.

[name]Helena[/name] - love this. I think [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Helena[/name] are great together. Again, love the nn [name]Leni[/name]. [name]Nell[/name], [name]Elle[/name]/[name]Ella[/name], and [name]Lena[/name] could also be cute nns.

[name]Sylvia[/name] - probably my favorite. [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] are a bit cutesy, but not terribly and she does have her full name she could fall back on. The idea of [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name]/[name]Sylvie[/name] as sisters is just adorable–every time I think of another one of your options, I can’t help thinking, “It’s not as cute as [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name]!” I think it’s a perfect, stunning pair.

Good luck!

[name]Ever[/name] since I started watching Downton [name]Abbey[/name], I’ve been convinced of [name]Sybil[/name], so that’s my pick from your list. Next would be [name]Helena[/name], which I think is classic enough not to be considered trendy in any way. I know 2 little [name]Sylvia[/name]'s, which I love, but I think its rather popular in some areas so I’d probably avoid it. [name]Helen[/name] of course is fab, no complains, I just like [name]Sybil[/name] best at the moment!

This is a tough one, as I really like them all!

[name]Sybil[/name]: I love that it’s classic but unusual, and I think it’s very nice with [name]Phoebe[/name]

[name]Helen[/name]: If I had to pick, I’d say this is my least favorite on your list because it just lacks a little “something” that the others have

[name]Helena[/name]: I don’t really think this falls into the “a” trend because it’s another classic yet unusual name. Really pretty

[name]Sylvia[/name]: I really like “syl” names, though I think [name]Sylvia[/name] might be my least fave. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] as a sibset.

Holbs, I have been on the [name]Sybil[/name] bandwagon for a long time, despite a batsh*t crazy old neighbor of the same name, but Downton [name]Abbey[/name] definitely made it even more appealing.

Let me add another wrinkle here. The MN will definitely be [name]Eugenie[/name], for DH’s grandmother. So we have…

[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Helena[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]

PS, we will pronounce in Eu-[name]GENE[/name]-ie, bc grandmother did, and I don’t think I can get away with EU-jhen-ie without sounding ridiculous.

[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] would make a lovely and unusual choice for [name]Phoebe[/name]'s sister. I also love [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] but for some reason they don’t sound as good with [name]Eugenie[/name]. [name]Helen[/name] is a fine name but it lacks the spunk of [name]Phoebe[/name] in the opinion.

All four names are nice, but I agree that [name]Helen[/name] is certainly boring compared to [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Sybil[/name] and [name]Helena[/name]. With [name]Eugenie[/name] as the middle name…I’m going to say [name]Sybil[/name] is my first choice, [name]Helena[/name] second.

Have you considered Hélène? pronounce like [name]Elaine[/name] with an H at the beginning? This is my sister’s [name]MIL[/name]'s name and she’s in the states, doesnt have any pronunciation problems and gets a lot of compliments. It might be a little dated though. I love [name]Eugenie[/name] with a variation of [name]Helen[/name] or [name]Sylvia[/name].

You might also like Sylvelie, Sylveline or [name]Sylvaine[/name],

What about [name]Sylva[/name]? Or [name]Sylvia[/name] nn [name]Sylva[/name]? I also love [name]Eugenie[/name], my grandfather’s middle name was [name]Eugene[/name] and I’ve considered using [name]Eugenie[/name].

First off, I’m agreeing with all of the Downton [name]Abbey[/name] love. This show has made [name]Sybil[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Violet[/name], and [name]Ethel[/name] huge name crushes for me. Anyway I would put [name]Helena[/name] or [name]Sybil[/name] with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I’m actually really enchanted by the [name]Pheobe[/name]/[name]Sybil[/name] sibling pair.

Wow! Let me tell you, [name]Sybil[/name] is getting a LOT more love this time than when I have previously floated it. [name]Glad[/name] y’all are coming around to my way of thinking! =)

Others I have considered are [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Clementine[/name], and [name]Delia[/name]. [name]Do[/name] any of those tickle your fancy more than the original 4?

My vote is [name]Sybil[/name]. Reminds me of [name]Sybil[/name] from Downton [name]Abbey[/name] and she is GORGEOUS! [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sybil[/name] go really well together. Second choice would be [name]Helena[/name] with the nickname [name]Lena[/name]. That is cute!
My least favourite is [name]Helen[/name] because to me that is just too dated and too old lady for me. I can’t see that name making a comeback sorry!
I hope you go with [name]Sybil[/name].

All are nice, [name]Sylvia[/name] is a favorite of mine so my vote goes there. Next would be [name]Helena[/name], very classy and as far as I’ve seen not overused. [name]Sybil[/name] is not as widely used today, at least at the moment, so it would make an interesting choice. [name]Helen[/name] while pretty doesn’t really have the same snap as the other three and doesn’t pair as well with [name]Phoebe[/name] either. [name]Eugenie[/name] goes with them all well.

Yes, I must agree with the Downton [name]Abbey[/name] fans: against my family’s wishes, I have added the name “[name]Sybil[/name]” to my name list!!! There are many critics of the name, but I just think it is lovely, and I also think it makes a very unique, flowing combination with [name]Phoebe[/name].
[name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Helen[/name] are also wonderful choices, in my opinion!

OK, now my contrarian Nameberry side is coming out. Is Dowton [name]Abbey[/name] going to make [name]Sybil[/name], if not trendy then…hip? shudder

If Downton [name]Abbey[/name] makes [name]Sybil[/name] popular, it will only be here on NB; I can’t see it making a serious comeback anywhere else. I love all four of the original choices, with [name]Helen[/name] as my favourite. However, with the mn of [name]Eugenie[/name], [name]Helena[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] and then [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] are my favourites. I like [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] very much, but like [name]Silvana[/name] even better (the name of the stage manager at La [name]Scala[/name] in [name]Milan[/name] that I knew). I would go with either [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] or [name]Helena[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name].

I would chose [name]Helena[/name], its one of my favorite names. Then [name]Helen[/name] because i can strongly imagine a younger [name]Helen[/name]'s personality being quieter and more refined compared to a [name]Phoebe[/name], some call it dull compared to [name]Phoebe[/name] but you could say it just has a different ‘personality’ to it. Then [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Cybil[/name]. But [name]IMO[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Cybil[/name] doesnt sound right. [name]Phoebe[/name] is quite sing song then bam, [name]Cybil[/name], which ends to harshly to me. [name]Cybil[/name] and [name]Maude[/name] sound good together as they have the same strong ending. All 4 names are lovely.

I also love [name]Sybil[/name] (but unfortunately I think it’s still unusable in the UK due to an old sitcom, despite Downton [name]Abbey[/name])! By far the best choice with [name]Phoebe[/name].
