[name]Sybil[/name] is great but with [name]Bryony[/name] it is a little too y heavy. It has a different feel to [name]Dorothea[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] which is much more frilly either are good it just depends on what style you are aiming for eg
I see [name]Sybil[/name] with a sibling named [name]Maud[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name] or [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Dorothea[/name] with a sibling named [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name].

Thanks for the opinion [name]Rollo[/name]! I appreciate it!
Anybody else?
I love the old-fashioned charm and history of the name [name]Sybil[/name]. [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Bryony[/name] is too heavy on the b’s and y’s so it doesn’t sound or look very good. I think [name]Sybil[/name] and [name]Dorothea[/name] are fine together because they’re the same type of vintage style. [name]Sybil[/name] would have sisters named [name]Edith[/name] (but that may be too Downton [name]Abbey[/name]), [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Vera[/name], [name]Florence[/name], [name]Frances[/name] or [name]Ada[/name] to name a few. Here are some mn suggestions.
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Theodora[/name] (too similar to [name]Dorothea[/name] perhaps?)
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Rosamund[/name] (love)
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Octavia[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Georgiana[/name]
It’s not really my style and I wouldn’t use it myself because I can’t get the association of the movie about the girl with multiple personalities out of my head. I do understand though that the name itself has a good meaning and history, so I can get why people love the name.
[name]Sybil[/name] paired with [name]Bryony[/name] seems like it has too many “y’s”. If I were to use the name, I’d probably pair it with something like [name]Tabitha[/name].
I hate it BUT I wanted to say that that is a GOOD thing… because the last thing I’d want is for all kids to be named in the same style. I would be nothing but pleased if I met a child with such an unusual and striking name. Good for you
Personally I would add an extra l to the name and find another middle name.
The name itself is nice, though it kind of reminds me of Professor Trelawney from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], but maybe that’s just me who’s too much of a Potterhead
This name has a really weird association for me…
Pibble is the nickname given to the dog breed American Pit Bull Terrier, and [name]Sybil[/name] rhymes with Pibble… so I think of dogs.
[name]Even[/name] with this aside, I do not think it is a very attractive girl’s name.
I love [name]Sybil[/name]! I have thought about it myself as a way to get to a “[name]Billie[/name]” nickname. If I were using it I’d pair it with something light and whimsical to keep it from feeling too Downton [name]Abbey[/name] & serious, something like [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Plum[/name], [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Violet[/name], [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Dot[/name] – but that’s just my style. [name]Lovely[/name] name!
[name]Love[/name] claudia’s idea of [name]Sybil[/name] nn [name]Billie[/name]
Downton [name]Abbey[/name] is a better association than the [name]Sybill[/name] movie with [name]Sally[/name] [name]Field[/name].
I like the name.
Thank you so much for all of the suggestions! For middle names I love [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Rosamund[/name] (it’s sooo goregous!), [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Plum[/name], [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Violet[/name], and [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name]!
I’m also wondering- what impression does the name give you?
I have to chime in and say that while [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Bryony[/name] does have a lot of y’s in it, those y’s aren’t pronounced the same at all. For me, (someone who listens and analyzes speech for a living,) the concept of having too many y’s in this name is moot. Acoustically, I don’t see it being a problem. Visually, if you decided it had too many y’s, that would be different. As far as too many b’s… Well, there only two. So I personally don’t feel that’s too many at all. I actually think [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Bryony[/name] is a beautiful name that rolls off the tongue quite nicely.
Now, my reservation about [name]Sybil[/name] is the whole multiple personalities thing. Perhaps that reference is getting dated and younger people wont be aware of it; however, I’m 27 and am fully aware of it. And my bet is that anyone who ever takes a psych class is going to be exposed to that reference.
Bottom line, I think [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Bryony[/name] is a fabulous name. If the reference doesn’t bother you, go for it!
I’m warming up to [name]Sybil[/name]. The witchy vibe is a little too much for me, but I would certainly love to see other parents naming their daughters [name]Sybil[/name]. Multiple personality [name]Sybil[/name] was exposed as a fraud, so I feel like that association is moot now.
FYI - There was a book that came out in 2011 called “[name]Sybil[/name] Exposed” by [name]Debbie[/name] [name]Nathan[/name]. The author claimed that the multiple personality story in the film was a fraud. [name]Sybil[/name] wasn’t even the patient’s real name but a pseudonym so I wouldn’t worry about the association too much. Enough time has passed since the film to take [name]Sybil[/name] off her lonely shelf, dust her off and make her shine again!
I would say [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Juliet[/name], perhaps. I really don’t like [name]Dorothea[/name]…too musty! And while I like [name]Bryony[/name], it feels too clunky with [name]Sybil[/name].
I agree with mischa " take [name]Sybil[/name] off her lonely shelf, dust her off and make her shine again!"

If you are still wondering…try [name]Theresa[/name] or [name]Therese[/name]
I was named for my father’s favorite sister in law (sybil) and my great grandmother (theresa). Tho, after she died we found out her name was [name]Theresia[/name]
I know this thread is a little old, but I just have to comment. I have a daughter named [name]Sybil[/name], and her middle name is [name]Briony[/name]! I see that some people have commented on the flow and the repeated Ys and Bs, but neither has ever bothered us. We actually chose [name]Briony[/name] to honor a family surname, O’[name]Brien[/name], which is why we chose the [name]Briony[/name] spelling over [name]Bryony[/name]. I suppose I’m biased, but I absolutely love [name]Sybil[/name]'s name and I’d choose it again in a heartbeat.
Also, I’ll mention that the reception to [name]Sybil[/name]'s name has been better than expected! We like clunky, vintage names, so we anticipate a little negative feedback. Surprisingly, we seem to be getting more comments on our baby [name]Olive[/name]'s name than we have gotten on [name]Sybil[/name]. So, in short, it’s definitely usable!
I think [name]Sybil[/name] is adorable
