Alright, I admit, Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] is making me like this one. I haven’t started properly watching, but I’m seriously considering it, (even though I know it’s super depressing later on) and the names are actually one thing I love about it. Looking at pictures from the show, little Sybbie [name_m]Branson[/name_m] (who was named [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] after her mother) is completely adorable. I think that might be helping me like it, but I’m not sure.
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it in the FN spot, or MN spot?
What would you pair with it as a MN?
Totally agree that is exactly why I started liking it also! It’s a GP name as my husband will never allow me to use it. Plus there is the issue of the crazy lady with multiple personalities.
Other names from the show that grew on me…
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
I adore the name [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] in either spot for it’s spunk and vintage charm.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] is one pairing idea :).
I have a feeling it’ll have to join [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] on my GP list haha. I love [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] too though :’) I also love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] from it, and of course I was delighted to see that, well, the most attractive male on the show had my top boys name - [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]
I was thinking of that or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] myself, actually!
Hmm, I have some thinking to do here, haha.
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is a bit too grounded for me, but it’s solid and sturdy, no-frills but clearly feminine. I think it’s usable. I prefer the more glamorous and dramatic [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]/[name_f]Sibylla[/name_f] though (fell in love with it because of [name_f]Sibylla[/name_f] in Kingdom of [name_f]Heaven[/name_f], played by [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_u]Green[/name_u]). I don’t watch Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] (I don’t watch TV series in general, long story) so I wouldn’t have thought of the character reference.
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]! Another Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] name!
Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] has made me like [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] (I used to think [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] was one of the worst names and now it is on my list).
I think the timing is right for the DA names too. A lot of names from that era, which I would have considered ugly old lady names a decade (or two) ago are becoming more usable. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is one that gets me. I have an ancestor named [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] who I am particularly inspired by. A few years ago I would have never considered using the name because it seemed too old and unattractive and now I won’t consider using it because it is too popular!
Ahh naming trends…
PS Sybbie (both baby and nn) make me like [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] more as well
