Syllables... How Important Are They?

please excuse my edit

I think it depends on the names themselves. Your examples sound okay to me. I think that meaning trumps flow any day.

I think flow is more important with first and last names since those would be used more often. Personally, however, it bothers me when flow isn’t right with first and middles because I imaging myself scolding my children by using their full name and if I can’t roll it off my tongue how I like, it just doesn’t work for me. Your examples seem fine though.

I think it depends on the name. I don’t think syllables should matter very much. What matters is if the name sounds good and you love it. My name with my maiden name was 2-1-1 and now i’m 2-1-1 and I think my name is pretty and I couldn’t care less how short it is. It has meaning and pretty sounds. My husband is 2-2-2 and no one cares about that either.

So again, I think it depends on the name, if it sounds good and you love it and the names flow well, then syllables shouldn’t matter.

As everyone has said, the impact of syllable combos really depends on the names.

For the record, I think [name]Felix[/name] [name]Eldridge[/name] and [name]Liam[/name] [name]Ezra[/name] are fine with a one syllable last name. Most people don’t notice syllables unless there is something very glaring about the combo. For example, having 2-2-2 and alliteration would probably be more of an issue.

I don’t worry about it overly much. My first is two syllables and both my maiden and married surnames are two. 2-2-2 is a bit much, but 2-1-2 or 1-2-1 or 2-2-1 could easily work out well with the right names and the emphasis on the right syllables.

OMG yes i am with you! the middle name we are using (to honour my grandma) is two syllables and so is my last name and they both end in the same ‘a’ sound well my last name is ending in er but we pronounce it almost identically in NZ eg Summa and [name]Summer[/name] would sound pretty much the same!

and then a lot of the first names i like are two syllables and end in the ‘a’ sound, though its forced me to find other names ending in different sounds and opened me to some beautiful names i wouldnt have found otherwise its still annoying me!

Flow isnt extremely important to me, middles are barely used so as long as the first two work out i think its okay but i know what you mean… its a fine balance!

I think your names sound nice. Syllables aren’t everything. I personally like for names to flow fn-mn and then fn-mn-ln. But sometimes, it is hard to work around a last name. I say just go with names you like!
