Sylvie/Sylvia, too dated or fun?

Thoughts on [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]/Sylvia? Is it dated like [name_f]Linda[/name_f] or [name_f]Karen[/name_f], or fun and ready for use?

Fun and ready to use!

Sylvie especially feels very fresh and stylish right now, with its cute sound and chic [name_u]French[/name_u] vibe.

Sylvia is strong and classic, and feels cool in a more vintage revival way.

Fun and ready to use. They are old enough to come back into style, not like [name_f]Linda[/name_f] or [name_f]Karen[/name_f]. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]’s -ie ending and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]’s similarity to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] make them more fashionable.

I think it’s fun! The [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] I’ve personally known longest would be in her mid 20s now, so for me the name still feels pretty fresh. I also think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] Plath, so I get poetic and vintage vibes. I like this one!

Sylvie, I’m not as much a fan of, but I think it’s still definitely usable and maybe feels a touch more modern (fits in with names like [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f]).

I’ve read that in [name_f]France[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is considered a dated name, so I guess it depends on where you live.

Neither name seems dated to me (in the UK). [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is very sweet and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is a lovely vintage name. I love the [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] Plath and La [name_f]Dolce[/name_f] [name_f]Vita[/name_f] associations.

I dont find them dated at all. They’re rather timeless imo.
Whereas [name_f]Karen[/name_f] and [name_f]Linda[/name_f] are very much dated.

I think of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] as vintage and old-fashioned, but in a good way! I associate “dated” names with names that aren’t quite ready to be back in style. Vintage and old-fashioned are definitely back in, and I think both [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] are fresh and unique! I really like them a lot.

Thank you everyone! I have been crushing on [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] for dd2 due in the spring. Hubby likes [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] to go with our dd1 [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. I am in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and a friend who teaches [name_u]French[/name_u] and is originally from Europe told me it was like
[name_f]Karen[/name_f] or [name_f]Linda[/name_f].

In [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking areas [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is very dated. But not in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking areas.

Sylvie was never dated in the states. It’s ready for use.

Sylvia is fine as well. It was never nearly as popular as [name_f]Linda[/name_f] or [name_f]Karen[/name_f]. It only ranked #50 at its peak. Consider the [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] spelling.

We loved it but didn’t use as we have [name_u]French[/name_u] family members, and it is dated there. It’s not considered particularly clunky or ugly though, just very popular in the 60s and a name of its era in [name_f]France[/name_f].

But in [name_f]English[/name_f] contexts it’s fresh and lovely! [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] would be a perfect sister to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] :two_hearts:

Definitely fun and ready to use! I think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is elegant, and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is sweet with [name_u]French[/name_u] flair. Both would wear beautifully today, imo.

Sylvia does seem old-fashioned, but I think it’s pretty and I would like to see it come back into style, with its similarity to popular names like [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]!

Sylvie and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] feel really fantastical & fairy-like to me, not dated at all! I align it much nearer to [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] than [name_f]Linda[/name_f] & [name_f]Karen[/name_f]!
