Sylvie - thoughts?

I’ve been contemplating this name for some time, trying to decide how I feel. From what I’ve read online, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is quite dated in [name_f]France[/name_f], but it does have a sleek, ethereal quality that I can’t shake.

What are your thoughts? Is it pretentious? That’s a great fear of mine.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] has definitely grown on me because of NB, because [name_f]Silvija[/name_f] is quite a mom name here in Croatia. It’s not my favourite but it definitely has that [name_u]French[/name_u] charm and I can see it working on a little girl. I definitely wouldn’t say it is pretentious!

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (Violette?) would make a lovely set! Some other names you might like:

[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f]

[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillias[/name_f]

As you probably already know, I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! To me, it is a dainty name that sparkles like silver in the forest - silver bark on aspens, branches covered in twinkling snow - and miles away from pretentious. As I am not part of the [name_u]French[/name_u] culture, just an admirer, it doesn’t bother me that it is dated for [name_u]French[/name_u] families - for example I don’t have any [name_u]French[/name_u] relatives who would have trouble seeing it on a child because of their associations with it.

I won’t ever be having/naming another child so if you’d like to use my favourites, [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], they’re totally up for grabs

I like Sylvie!

I don’t think that it being dated in France matters since you don’t live there. I also don’t find it pretentious, I think it fits well with other popular names like Sophie, Sadie, Celeste, etc! Overall, a cute and pretty name.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] doesn’t feel pretentious to me. It’s fun, playful, and full of energy, as well as chic and magical. I also think she’s fits really well with your list, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] & [name_f]Margot[/name_f] especially is a favourite sibset of mine. I honestly don’t think a name being dated is an issue, as long as you like the name (imo it’s just a descriptor like modern or vintage).

Why should it matter if its dated in [name_f]France[/name_f]? Reminds me of [name_u]Loki[/name_u] at this point.

I love it! DH and I considered it for our second girl due in [name_u]November[/name_u]. I like vintage-style names, and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] though dated in [name_f]France[/name_f] sounds like a refreshing twist on [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]! It has a lovely meaning too.

I literally think it goes great with the other names on your list - they all range from classic to vintage and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] fits right in! [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] in particular would make for good siblings to [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], thank you so much for gifting me that stunning combo! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is truly a silvery, woodsy name that belongs in a fairytale, but isn’t fey. You’ve sold me!

Great point – I am worlds away from my Huguenot ancestors and will probably only visit France rather than live their permanently someday. Sophie definitely has the same soft, sweet vibes!

It does have a shimmery elegance to it. Thank you, Grace/Nell! :white_heart: :white_heart: :white_heart:

That’s such a wise perspective, Jam, that I hope to adopt myself. And Sylvie and Margot are truly made for one another, no?

I definitely have to watch that! From my brief scan online, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] seems like a cool namesake.

Thank you for the validation!

@Elizabeth8160 I love hearing that just hearing it enchants you! It does have a certain windblown, tinkling quality.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f], and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] are such a truly divine set! I wonder if Sylvie’s likeness to the word “silver” makes [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] too color-themed, though?

i adore sylvie!

in no way is sylvie pretentious! as a matter of fact, she’s starting to become much more popular in america. she has a friendly, fun, sunny vibe, and the fact that it sounds so much like a nickname (and oftentimes, is) makes it feel so much more approachable.

she has such a similar vibe to the rest of your names: a classic, subtly vintage feel. sylvie diana, sylvie margot, and sylvie julia would all be stunning! (or maybe not combos, and instead, sisters!)

also, i think the connotation with loki is really nice, and makes it even more wearable as it becomes more familiar to the common population.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is our frontrunner for our second daughter, due in [name_u]February[/name_u]! Our first daughter is named [name_f]Felicity[/name_f].

I speak [name_u]French[/name_u] and have lived in [name_f]France[/name_f] before, but its being dated in the Francophone world doesn’t bother me because, well, we’re American. It was INSANELY popular there in the '60s, though - it was the #1 name and was give to over SIX PERCENT of girls at its peak. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] at its peak was only around 4%. I associate it with the [name_m]Gerard[/name_m] de Nerval novel [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], which is surreal and romantic and ethereal.
