Synesthesia?

I somewhat know what synesthesia is since I do have some form of it. I just don’t fully understand it or know much about it. I’ve always been very curious and I want to know more about it. Can anyone clue me in?

I don’t know the full extent of synesthesia. I first heard about it when I got into names a few years ago. Does it only deal with names and numbers? Or can it extend to other things in life too? [name_m]How[/name_m] would do you categorize the different types (is there some kind of official system?)?

I can see colors, strong imagery, get strong feelings from names, numbers, and letters of the alphabet (and other things unrelated to names and numbers too, like nature, the elements, and things like that. Is that even related to synesthesia or is that just me?). I thought it was just one of my “weird” quirks until I saw people talking about it a few times.

Can anyone give me any information on it? I just want to understand it more.

Here’s a site that might help: Neuroscience for Kids - Synesthesia

[name_m]Just[/name_m] from reading the information from the website, I think your quirks are part of your synesthesia.

Thank you!

There are many kinds. Me, personally, when I hear sounds/word spoken aloud/music I associate the noise with a color.

That does sound like synesthesia. I’ve always thought it would be awesome to have synesthesia, so. . . congrats? :stuck_out_tongue:

When I was in middle school I read the book “A [name_m]Mango[/name_m] Shaped Space” by [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] Mass which is about synesthesia. I’d recommend reading it, it’s very good and presents a lot of information about synesthesia in a non-sciency way. However, Mass doesn’t have synesthesia herself so I’m not sure exactly how accurate it is (but at the very least she clearly researched the topic thoroughly).

Most people understand synesthesia to some degree- one study showed that a vast majority of people choose a sharply lined picture to represent the sound “Kee” and a more rounded symbol for a sound like “Ha.” But the degree synesthesia extends varies greatly. Some people can make full mental landscapes out of numbers, like savant [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] Tammet, who recited pi to over 22000 digits. Others merely associate some sounds with some images. Synesthesia isn’t very well understood yet, but there appears to be different types of connections between sensory parts of the brain with synesthetes.

sansa_nanami: That’s so cool! Thank you!

esswei: I’m going to look into that book! Thx!

daisy451: Thank you!

I agree with other berries. I don’t really know but I guess I have something like synesthesia. [name_f]Every[/name_f] letter, word and name has different kind of image and appearance to me. For instance, letter “S” is crafty, witty young woman with impediment; name Nadezda is sea-blue,fair-haired, a woman in her 40-s who likes to sing, word “quintessence” is short, fat man who like to wear red and has curly hair.
Sorry if it wasn’t helpful but I don’t know much myself and would be interested to learn more with you.

You were very helpful, thx!
