I’ve long been intrigued by the name [name_f]Effie[/name_f]. I like that it means well-spoken, and it has a familiar feel even though I’ve never encountered anyone with the name. But a few questions:
Does it sound like a complete name?
I just read its Nameberry entry and noted that it’s apparently the name of a Hunger Games character (I hate what movies do to names). Is [name_f]Effie[/name_f] a main/important/likable character? And is it likely the name will be tied to the series?
I love [name_f]Effie[/name_f]. I tend see it as a nn because the first time I heard it, it was a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (and I’ve since seen it as a nn for [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]). But I think it could be a full name, especially in the UK where I’m from as nn’s as full names are really popular at the moment. Besides if names like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] are legitimate full names why not [name_f]Effie[/name_f]?
Honestly I really dislike [name_f]Effie[/name_f]. I knew one who was an awful person and the sound isn’t very appealing [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. As far as the Hunger Games, [name_f]Effie[/name_f] is a pretty notable character and I could see the movie influencing the name a little. She isn’t as big of a character as the main ones though like [name_f]Katniss[/name_f], Peeta, or [name_f]Primrose[/name_f].
I disliked it before I’d read The Hunger Games (she’s not a main character, but not a particularly favourable one).
It’s not particularly pleasant sounding, nor does it really sound very namely for some reason. And the short ‘eff’ sound always reminds me of the cover up for the swear word (‘‘effing’’ and ‘‘eff off’’ and ‘‘the eff word’’ are used a lot in the UK, not sure about anywhere else). Probably just me though.
I always associate it with the character played by [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] in Dreamgirls, and didn’t think of the Hunger Games character until I opened the thread. Honestly, it reminds me of a name that one of the old ladies in my native Appalachia would have, which can be good or bad depending on your point of view.
I love the name [name_f]Effie[/name_f]! I haven’t read or seen the Hunger Games so I couldn’t help you there but I think most people over 20-something (and I’m saying this as a 22 yr old) wouldn’t make that association. I have honestly thought before that I wish I had an association with Greece so I had an excuse to use it. Its cute and spunky but not to little girlish.
Same here. In fact, my mind had floated to [name_f]Effy[/name_f] Stonem from Skins (UK). The [name_f]Effie[/name_f] from The Hunger Games might have a bit of an impact right now since Catching [name_m]Fire[/name_m] came out almost two weeks ago, but overall it’s a great name. I like it best as a nickname for [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], but it could work well for a girl named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or any name with beginning with an F or Ph.
Many people say F-ing instead of the swear word. This could be an American thing, or something used in the states I have lived in. [name_f]Effie[/name_f] in my opinion sounds very close. If it was not for that I think [name_f]Effie[/name_f] is adorable and would make such a sweet nickname.
I don’t really like [name_f]Effie[/name_f] as a full name. (I don’t like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or others either). [name_f]Effie[/name_f] is a barely there semi-main character who is very annoying and loud.
I think it’s a perfectly fine nickname for many names and if you want some names, I’d be happy to suggest some
I may be the odd one out but i immediatley thing of the hunger games character, that being said im a huge book need and love the hunger games, see the movies multiple times and read the books multiple times. I also like Effies character but that doesnt mean much since my favourite character in the series is Haymitch the town drunk. I dont however think its a big deal because having a character with the same name hasnt effected any of the Isabellas, Bellas, Jacobs, Edwards…
