I have long loved the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. It’s sweet, spunky and girly that can carry a child till adulthood. The problem is [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is at 5 in my state and was top in 2010 and is number 7 in Australia. I don’t mind common names but I don’t like top 10 common for girls (except [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) while my boys list has the top name in my state in the top 3 ([name_m]Jack[/name_m]). I also worry that by the time I’m ready to have children [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] will be quite dated since it has been so popular and is currently falling.
Should [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] join my list or is it too common? or will it date too fast?
While I agree that [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is quite popular here in Australia, I don’t think the name will date to fast. If you love the sweet, spunky and vintage feel of [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], I say go for it! [name_m]Add[/name_m] her to your list. Who knows? By the time you have children, you might not even like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] anymore and your list could be completely different.
There’s nothing wrong with having a popular name. If you love it, that’s all that matters. Obviously, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is popular for a reason! Many names don’t become dated that fast, so I’m sure that as long as you aren’t having your kids decades from now, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] won’t feel super 2010s. Some names just stick and make constant revivals anyways, and I’d consider [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] to be one of them. Think about it: [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] could’ve been someone born in the early 1900s too.
I love the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], despite it’s popularity I have only met 2 [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]'s in the last 4 years. I had a conversation at a work day where I met one of the workers from another office, she was talking to us about her baby daughter and how she had such a hard time trying to find a name that would fit both a baby and an adult. She told us how in the end she decided to name her daughter [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], I have to agree with her that it is a beautiful name that ages well.
I teach Prep / kindergarten in [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and although [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is popular, I’ve only met one young [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] so far. At school we have many more Sophies, Allegras and Graces.
Also, just to put another perspective on things - as someone mentioned, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] could easily be someone born in the 90’s. I actually know of three [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]'s who were born in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
