So I’ve had [name]Oliver[/name] picked out for a few months (due in [name]September[/name]). Truthfully, I love everything about it. [name]Ollie[/name] isn’t my favorite, but I don’t mind it. My kids already call my tummy [name]Oliver[/name] and its pretty cute when they say it. What keeps me second guessing it is the trend factor. It’s getting more and more popular and in my state it’s even #23.
The sibset is [name]Violet[/name], [name]Scott[/name] ([name]Scotty[/name]), and [name]Oliver[/name]…which I think is pretty perfect.
Anyway I would love others opinions about [name]Oliver[/name] and maybe even encouragement to use a different name. The other names that are always in my head:
[name]Calvin[/name] (like [name]Oliver[/name] better, but nn [name]Cal[/name] more than [name]Ollie[/name]!)
[name]Bo[/name]
[name]Peter[/name]
[name]Reid[/name]
[name]Graham[/name]
And I love [name]Simon[/name], but don’t want to repeat initials if possible.
I do think [name]Oliver[/name] is handsome and fits in with [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Scott[/name] ([name]Scotty[/name]). I wouldn’t go for [name]Calvin[/name] if you are just preferring the nick name (in opposition to [name]Ollie[/name]) and not so much the name itself. I love [name]Simon[/name] but I understand not wanting to repeat initials. I am really a fan of [name]Graham[/name] here! [name]Violet[/name], [name]Scott[/name], and [name]Graham[/name] would sound very handsome together!!! Though it doesn’t necessary have a nick name per say, I’m sure nick names will come easy. Whether it be “related” (call him [name]Teddy[/name] [name]Graham[/name]? Hehe ) or just a general nick name (handsome, bubby, love, sweetie) or even a nick name based on personality/appearance (Peanut, Speedy, Firecracker, etc).
i like oliver, but agree its getting popular - and i detest the nickname ollie, but you said you didnt mind it. haha thats all i got its a pretty good name.
[name]Oliver[/name] – This name makes me think of someone super nerdy, and not that masculine of name, imo.
[name]Calvin[/name] (like [name]Oliver[/name] better, but nn [name]Cal[/name] more than [name]Ollie[/name]!) - OK
[name]Bo[/name] – This seem very country, though I like it. Prefer the French spelling of [name]Beau[/name] better
[name]Peter[/name] – Not a fan.
[name]Reid[/name] – my favorite. I love it’s simplicity and strength.
[name]Graham[/name] – Like it.
I also love [name]Reid[/name] and agree with the pp that it is simple and strong! I used to love [name]Oliver[/name], but my DH does NOT like it, so I got over it. He says it makes him think of “all of her.” I didn’t like it as much once he said that, so maybe that will help you too…tho I still do like it!
I know soooo many Olivers (ages 0-6), but it’s a great name. [name]Oscar[/name] is also getting popular. We have [name]Calvin[/name] on our short list, and I think it has that same quirky yet traditional and familiar feel. Another name I like in that vein is [name]Milo[/name] or [name]Miles[/name].
I love [name]Oliver[/name]! It sounds fantastic with your other kids’ names. [name]Oliver[/name] is my favorite of your choices, regarldess of popularity. My second favorite is [name]Peter[/name].
I do like both [name]Calvin[/name], [name]Simon[/name], and [name]Graham[/name].
However, if [name]Oliver[/name] is absolutely the name for you, then I say go for it. Number 23 on the popularity charts shouldn’t kill your love for the name. After all, there will always be other Olivers, but if your son is born and he definitely is “an [name]Oliver[/name]”, then use [name]Oliver[/name]. Good luck!
[name]Oliver[/name] is a great name, and a lot of other people think so too! [name]Just[/name] in my little circle, I know of two Olivers that were born in the last 2 years, one little girl that would have been [name]Oliver[/name] if she had been a boy, and an [name]Olive[/name] (girl.)
Popularity is a big turn off for me, so I could never go for [name]Oliver[/name]. But, it IS a great name! My fave off your list is [name]Calvin[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Calvin[/name], [name]Scott[/name], and [name]Violet[/name]! Also, as a pp listed, I think [name]Graham[/name] would be an excellent choice as well.
I know so many Olivers as well, I’m bored with it. [name]Even[/name] in Finland it’s popular. It’s such a wet name, in my opinion. And [name]Ollie[/name] is worse.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Calvin[/name] and [name]Cal[/name] from your list. It goes much better with your sibset.
I am in [name]Oz[/name] and it is definitely a popular name here - no doubt about it! I used to think it was a great name ( and still think it is a really nice name) but the popularity is starting to taint my love of the name.
I have 2 Olivers in my class this year & had 2 [name]Olivia[/name]'s last year (grade 1). My sister-in-law’s [name]Oliver[/name] ([name]Ollie[/name]) is almost 4 months old. My closest friend has an 11 month [name]Olivia[/name] and her sister has a 10 month old [name]Oliver[/name] (this friend was NOT impressed when her sister named her little boy [name]Oliver[/name] 5 weeks after she gave birth to [name]Olivia[/name]) !
I love the name [name]Oliver[/name]. Yes it is popular, but that isn’t always a bad thing. Sometimes it helps a child feel part of a peer group. If you like it use it.
Alternatively I adore [name]Cal[/name]- prefer [name]Callum[/name] nn [name]Cal[/name].
I am not one to try to talk you out of [name]Oliver[/name] because we used it to honor my grandfather. I have not even for a moment regretted the choice. It is a popular name where we live (#6!) but even so, we’ve only ever met 1 other little [name]Oliver[/name] (and we go to playgroups and different playgrounds all over the city.) I think it is a great name that has stood the test of time. For what it is worth we used [name]Graham[/name], another of your choices, as his mn.
Good luck with your decision!
… You are officially my new favorite person for having [name]Bo[/name] on your list! <3 You have no idea the joy I feel right now … I honestly want to cry! That name right there should talk you out of Oliver; Violet, Scott & Bo could work beautifully together <3
I came to the thread because I dislike the name Oliver (just like I hate Olivia), and I don’t think it’s a great reason, I think it just reminds me of olives and I’m not a fan of eating olives (I know, dumb reason). Then I started reading your post and thought “She’s so set on it, and it’s not a horrible name … let her know she’s making the right choice”. NOW, Bo is the name. You have to use it somehow … make it work!
But I am having trouble coming up with reasons to avoid [name]Oliver[/name]. It’s such a lovely name, though it IS super trendy. Well, not super. I guess a problem with it is that it MIGHT ‘age’ your child… (okay, all names do this…) it is classic, but I don’t actually know anyone named [name]Oliver[/name]. I just know of children (not even any children personally, surprisingly, but friends of friends) with it. So, it might start to decline in a few years, and be the type of name that places your child.
I had to reply, as we had a baby boy earlier this year and went to the hospital with two names: [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Simon[/name]. In the end, we decided on [name]Simon[/name] because of the trendiness of [name]Oliver[/name], though I do love that name. Since you have another child without the “S” initial, I don’t think it would be weird to have a [name]Scott[/name] and a [name]Simon[/name]. My favorite girl name is [name]Sophie[/name] and I wouldn’t hesitate to pair that with [name]Simon[/name] (except that it, too, is so trendy). All of your names are great so you’ll be happy no matter what, but I had to come on and promote [name]Simon[/name]!
